10 years ago this month, I met Conan on that very ferry. This story is long for a YT comment, but I feel like this is the right crowd for it. Gather 'round, chums. On a Sunday evening with very few people around, I waited for the Bainbridge-to-Seattle ferry in the no-car passenger line. Two people lined up behind me, and behind them were Conan and his family. I started losing my mind as a longtime fan, remembering that I'd heard about his wife having family in the Seattle area, but I kept my cool, as I picked up their "worn out after a long day with kids" vibe. One of my clearest memories was when the incoming ferry let its passengers off, and half the people who walked past greeted or shouted at Conan, to which he replied INCREDIBLY passive-aggressively. "Oh, huh, hi, yeah, uh huh." Lines up w/ the guy who's revealed himself as such in podcasts and BTS clips. In retrospect, his deadpan eff-you retorts to dopey fan screams makes me laugh pretty hard. But at the time, I thought it meant he was gonna destroy me if I said hello. Still, I had to try. I waited until we all started walking onto the ferry and boarding, at which point Conan was slightly separated from his family; that's when I walked up and said, "I don't want to be a bother while you're with your family, but I wanted to say I'm a huge fan, thank you for how much comedy you've given the world and also making it easier for me to be a redhead." I try to excuse myself, and he puts his hand on my shoulder and says, "Really, I figured I'd make it *harder* for redheads. What's your name?" And he went on to conduct a miniature CONAF chat for maybe five minutes. He was really good at working w/ the material I gave him just being myself. He cracked jokes, answered serious questions, and riffed politely. My mother, who was visiting me in Seattle at the time, took a photo of us with a 2012 smartphone, and it's maybe the blurriest photo of me that exists. I treasure it to this day.
