it was a pretty underrated tech imo. I can see, why people usually preferred plumed archers, because ... well ... because they are plumed archers :V But mayan crossbows are actually pretty good with their discount and obsidian arrows allows them, if in sufficient numbers, to break into walled areas and even take down town centers if left unchecked (as they conveniently outrange them). It made massed crossbows so much more dangerous. Well ... rip siege archers I guess :(

they are useful in arena and pretty much in every situation where stone walls are a thing. Unfortunately, that's pretty much the only thing they are good at (with the rare exception of a case where two players build castles right next to each other in castle age, but I've seen this scenario exactly once so far :D)

Huns are good for newbies, dont need to build houses so less to think about and easier food-based eco at the start. Arabia is classic competitive map, other maps with chokepoints might give you bad wall-crutching habits if you're planning to play competitive.

PHil Thieme What the last guy said about huns being for newbies is true in that they are easier to use but they are also not the norm so I wouldn’t recommend him getting used to the only civ that doesn’t have to build houses before any of the other ones, Celts are pretty strong and straight forward to use, they don’t require any deeper understanding of the game to use their strong points, Japanese are really versatile and are a good civ to play if you want to consistently play one civ but learn different ways of playing, you can try most things with them and I’d says probably franks, between those 3 he should be able to learn the basics of the game pretty well before getting into some real crazy stuff, I’m not pro by any means so take this with a grain of salt but for me those three civs are the most straight forward/strong without having to be good at the game civs

Good advice here, and I'm gonna cast another vote for Franks. They're so streamlined with fast berries, free farm upgrades, and an uncomplicated tech tree. It's simple: house and palisade wall in Dark Age, fast castle with knight rush. Castles are cheap and can be placed first defensively and then on the flanks/ center to secure map control and extra resources. Back up your upgraded knights with throwing axemen to take out halbs. Trebs to take down opponent castles/ buildings. Can mix in bombard canons, rams, halbs, and/or hand cannons. It's a really straightforward, classic civ that has worked for so many for so long.

I used to play some matches against AI on HD where I made a ton of arbs with obisidan arrows and Saracen ally and just go f*ck things up. So much fun watching 60 arbs taking down a castle like it's made of paper.

can anyone help me out, my game loses sync even as single player 1v1 against a.i it take like 5 to 10 sec for a click to register, also 3-5 sec freezing every 10 min. is that the game or me? cause 2013 version plays smoother. its like age 2 def isnt optimized right and i have a good ass computer i built mine. its gotta be the game but anyone know a fix for sync issues even for playing solo.

Try writing your problem on Reddit, and what you have already tried to address the problem. Is DE the only game with that problem? Try to verify the game cache on Steam inxile.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115004662908-Verify-game-cache-files-Steam. If that doesn't help try to update or reinstall graphic drivers

The mayans have a unique tech that was recently buffed (you hear it mentioned a few times) It's: Obsidian arrows. It gives archers a +6 (previously +4) damage bonus against buildings and also a +6 (previously +0) damage bonus against stone defenses (walls & towers). Perfect for an arena game where people feel safe behind their walls.

@@nicolaas1122 Not to forget the staggered Civ bonus from Saracens adding +2 damage to standard buildings in Castle Age AND the team bonus adding another +2 damage to standard buildings. Not sure if going double Saracens means +4 from the team bonus. In total, it would amount to either a total of +10 (or +12) added damage.
