Wait a minute… I am a 63 yo Canadian and we do eat the same things as you do. But first of all, we eat LESS per person than you do. Obesity is not only a matter of quality, but also quantity. Secondly, education. In our schools fast food catering is forbidden. We have laws that forbid a fast food restaurant to open within a certain distance from a school. ( Less than 500 meters). We also have a huge advantage over Americans: Free medical care. Prevention and obesity treatments are easily available, especially for the kids. We have access to free nutritionists, free nurse care in clinics, and educational programs. Low income families have access to food banks in their neighborhoods. But it’s mainly education and medical care that makes the difference in the long term. Diabetes is among the principal causes of premature deaths and having free preventative treatment prevents complications like cancer, heart disease and strokes. That’s what happens in the USA.

I'm not completely clean on my diet, i do eat processed stuff in terms of cereal and cold cuts, but i usually keep it to whole foods. It tastes good if you can cook properly and it isn't shit for you. And also, regulations in Europe are much stricter than the US. A bag of Doritos has like twice the ingredients in America compared to Europe iirc. But it would benefit everyone if people ate whole foods. Fruits, veggies, chicken, steak, fish, eggs, whole grains and all that. Season it well and it's incredibly tasty. Unfortunately not as addicting as Reese's peanut butter cups.

I stopped 99% of processed foods in 2011. Immediately felt way better. Then went cooked-food vegan in 2019, felt a lot better still. Then in 2022 I went RWF fruitarian and that's finally when my internal organs began to thrive. I did a comprehensive diet analysis project for my tertiary degree and discovered all my macronutrients and micronutrients are within healthy parameters as a fruitarian. That takes into account I don't really need nearly as much sodium nor calcium as the USDA recommends. All other macros and micronutrients are within the threshold of what's considered healthy even as a fruitarian which is the red-headed step child of diets according to mainstream dietetics.

Long overdue cleanup of the american diet is needed, realistically the best you could hope for is to match EU standards, but USA should go further.
