One of the things I love about American sporting events is how friendly it is for women and children. When I was traveling abroad I found most events to be very male oriented with a lot of alcohol consumption, some violence and very few females and hardly any children. Much more severe in tone, not sol light hearted and fun. Looks like you had a great time!

As someone said what you experienced is going on 50 other stadiums across the country on the same day. Largest stadiums in the world #3 through #10 are all college football stadiums. Only one in India and one in North Korea are larger. 8 college stadiums are 100k plus, next 8 are 80k to 92k, and then 7 more are 70-80k. Then there are a ton in the 40-60k range. Edit: I’m thinking the list is missing a stadium in Mexico City being larger. However the largest crowd to see a football game was when Bristol Motor Speedway was transformed in a football stadium for Virginia Tech vs Tennessee with 156,000+ on hand for the game.

We Americans get stereotyped over food and guns and whatnot, which is completely fair and we embrace that stuff. But honestly America's stereotype should be about being obsessed with sport, with competition in general. Doesn't matter if it's football, that weird curling thing in the Olympics, esports, chess or checkers... Whatever it is, so much of our culture is built on competition. Americans love to compete, win or lose competition is great, but we do really love a winner.

The memorial you mentioned out front is actually dedicated the the soldiers of all wars (originally WW1 in 1924), that's why it is named DKR Texas Memorial Stadium "The stadium was originally dedicated on Thanksgiving Day in 1924, after the UT student body decided to name the stadium in honor of the 198,520 Texans who fought in World War I and the 5,280 who lost their lives doing so. In 1977, the stadium was rededicated to veterans of all wars."

Absolutely smashed that like button. Didn't expect much at all from this but I really enjoyed it. I'm an Aussie, from Sydney and I first got into American Football in 1970s! Just saw it on tv one time as a kid and I was hooked on the razzamatazz! Pure enjoyment to the max. I then got to actually play for the Sydney University Lions, and we had an American exchange student who showed me College Football and I was even more hooked! We used to go over to his place in Bondi on Friday nights and make chilli dogs and drink Coors and watch on tv lol.
@Demaenetus
@Demaenetus Ай бұрын
@aldunlop4622, it’s become very common to see Aussie punters on college football teams. I assume they were originally Australian rules football players, big dudes who can kick the hell out of a football. Before Aussie punters became so common here you never saw punters that big. My theory is that American punters are relatively small because the biggest and strongest kids on high school teams are selected to play other positions. BTW, I love me some Aussie rules football!
@aldunlop4622
@aldunlop4622 Ай бұрын
@@Demaenetus Yeah, most of those kickers are from AFL which is the most popular sport in Victoria (Melbourne), South Australia and Western Australia. I'm from Sydney and I hate it! The most popular football in New South Wales (Sydney) and Queensland is NRL - National Rugby League, which is similar to Rugby, so the players are more like NFL players (not kickers). Quite a few have gone to states to play as linemen. Jared Hayne played a couple of pre-season games for the 49ers as a running back but was dropped after he dropped a couple of kick returns, which I thought was unfair as he did actually run a few good returns. I think because of social media there's a lot more American interest or knowledge in Australia. It's niche, but I think if the NFL pumps some money in as they are doing, it may develop more of a following, although not on the same level as AFL or NRL.

It’s always been funny to me that Europeans don’t think Americans are real sports fans because they can exist in the same area as opposing fans without killing each other.. maybe that’s just the logical practical way to behave when you remember you’re simply at a sporting event (which is literally a professionalized children’s game) and not at the onset of WW3 or something.. fanbase legacies go back just as far in the US as they do in Europe, it just took a radical violent turn at some point in Europe for some reason

I’m not even really a football fan, but going to a college football game-especially SEC-is an amazing experience. I’m from Arkansas: say what you will about the Razorbacks football team, but game weekends in Fayetteville, in the Ozarks, are amazing. It’s definitely one of the best college towns in the country, and in such a beautiful natural setting.

I’m not a Texas fan at all, but I was generally treated well and we played every year, but I think they liked me as as Texas Tech fan because we usually beat Texas A&M. Still lots of trash talk, but that’s kind of my thing, so horns down, they hated my horns down koozie but I always rocked it anyway! Ha. I lived there for almost 24 years so I had a lot of arguments, but good people and good times!

Its not just Texas. You could go to UGA, Alabama, South Carolina, LSU, Ohio State, Oregon, etc... We all do this every Saturday all over the country. Just pick a night game where two teams from the same conference are playing. Its even better if ESPN Gameday is there.

Sigh…I miss tailgating at UT aka Tennessee. Taking 1/2 day Friday to prep, up at 4:30am for a night game, at spot next to bball arena by 5am, fully setup with tents, coolers, Sat dish, generator, TV’s, etc. Seeing all the people you only see a few times a year, making 700 Jell-O shots, food, watching the game at the tailgate and hearing the roar of a score and fireworks before you see it on TV. Watching other games after ours was over, slowly tearing down and packing up the tailgate van and eventually getting back home about 2am. And then doing again 6-7 more times a year. Bad knees took me out. 😢

In the Southern US, college football is king. It’s a total party atmosphere. Going to a professional game is a different atmosphere. The tailgating? Yes. The band, not so much. The cheerleaders? Why? I don’t want to diminish what they do but in high school or college, the fan section will cheer along. I’m glad you had a great experience!

Ever since TAM entered the SEC in 2013 (I was against that at first as I am I life long UGA fan) they have been quite fun to watch and their fans are some of the most gracious SEC fans.
