Lesson 24: E6B Flight Computer
The E6B flight computer is a form of circular slide rule used in aviation and one of the very few analog calculating devices in widespread use in the 21st century.
They are mostly used in flight training, because these flight computers have been replaced with electronic planning tools or software and websites that make these calculations for the pilots. These flight computers are used during flight planning (on the ground before takeoff) to aid in calculating fuel burn, wind correction, time en route, and other items. In the air, the flight computer can be used to calculate ground speed, estimated fuel burn and updated estimated time of arrival. The back is designed for wind vector solutions, i.e., determining how much the wind is affecting one's speed and course. They are frequently referred to by the nickname "whiz wheel".

E6-B. Why do we still teach ancient technology? The year is 2024. We have electronic calculators, and ForeFlight. Does learning a manual E6-B give a modern day student who is learning flight planning for the first time, a better understanding of flight planning? or is it a waste of time given our modern day technology? Do you guys think the E6-B should be thrown into the garbage can? Is it still worth learning given today's technology? If so...then why? Martha King's reasoning is to have a non electronic backup if the electronic calculator fails. What are your thoughts ? Any other reasons why a student pilot should take the time to learn how to use the manual E6-B whizz wheel? Anybody? Any airline pilots or want to comment? Anybody want to comment? Curious to hear your perspective. Are there any studies that cite it's better to learn initially using a manual E6-B? Some younger students say they just use their iPhone if their iPad fails. But that doesn't address the question if learning by a manual E6-B helps a student pilot better understand flight planning? Are we older guys just stubborn in our old ways, or is there a legitimate and rational reason to still learn the old E6-B? I am open minded and l'd like to hear your perspective on the topic.

It's a good question and good discussion. I'm personally with you but try to discuss this matter with the DPE. All I've heard from them "Student MUST know how to use E6B". Period. It's not part of ACS but this is what DPE want to see. Other than that - no reason to know what is E6B at all. ))

So why not look at the other conversion tables? When people use the word unicorn it refers to something special....something not ordinary in relati9n to ones current perspective. If the perspective is to fly only in America it sounds like ok u don't need to know the other conversions Which leads me to believe that those c9nversion are for people flying abroad... My guess it has to do with how you operate in flight and how big your world of exploration is R those conversions meant for someone doing business abroad in other countries? That conversion table does not just exist for nothing... It has a purpose and I presume that one would definitely be interested in knowing especially if you want to fy around the world.
