I've said it for years and I'll stand by it, the National Guard is the best way to be in the Army. You're allowed to have a work-life balance, focus on building a civilian career and actually make money, stay home, start a family, but you still get to go do cool soldier stuff from time to time. Been in for almost 7 years and loving it.

Also the Guard brings a unique skill set to the Army's missions, as your typical Guardsman has a full career and education fully separate from their military job. So when we're building based in Iraq or where ever, that same mechanic in your unit also might be a skilled IT specialist that wires up your internet or your cook can also be a carpenter or paramedic in real life. Guard troops tend to bring more to the table than just their military training.

National Guard here, currently deployed. Another benefit with the Guard is you can jump from Deployment to Deployment through Tour of Duty or in some cases (like with mine on this current deployment) knowing people who are with other units that are going to deploy. I've also done a year and a half of various work with Cal Fire and other civil unrest missions. It is all up to you and how to make the best of it.

Guard has been a strong option in the last couple decades. Been in 18 years, and have done numerous state deployments, 1 combat tour and went to college on the GI Bill for free. Nothing brings purpose and pride than serving your state community in times of crisis or even other states when they are in need. Even Been part of presidential inaugurations.

Former marine here, Nothing but respect for the national guard, they actually deploy as frequently if not more so, unit depending, than active units. My last couple years enlisted were spent on an army base as a marine reservist. NOW, that aside, shouldn’t we be focusing more on the fact that any of your recruiters will lie to your face regardless of branch or intended mos just to get your ass on the dotted line? Lol poor kids just need to know that no matter what branch, active or reserve, you’re probably getting a rosy reach around of promises that end with a very dry, green, weenie.

Great video. I served in the Pennsylvania National Guard while attending college back in the 1980’s. Since I qualified, I took the split training option. I ended up going 11 Bravo just so I had enough time to finish AIT the summer prior to my enrolling in college. My decision to do split training was because I had decided to take ROTC in college and become an officer. By doing that, I was credited two years of ROTC when I started college for completing basic training and AIT. I was therefore commissioned as a 2nd Lt. after two years of college. I continued to serve in National Guard until I graduated from college and transitioned from 11 Bravo to 19 Delta when I was commissioned. I was promoted to 0-2 when I graduated so I did all of my 0-1 time in the National Guard. I went on active duty with the First Cavalry Division after college and served in Desert Storm. I think the biggest benefit for me for serving in the National Guard was the respect I received from senior NCO’s once they found out I was previously an enlisted man. I know things are different in the Guard now, but I would certainly suggest the path I took to anyone who is interested in becoming an officer.

I’m in the process of enlisting right now and it’s gonna be a pain because of a medical issue. My Army recruiter was giving off the vibe that I was at the bottom of his to do list and I had pretty much gone back to the mentality of “I’m never gonna be able to join, it’s not worth it.” A Guard recruiter reached out to me and has done more in 2 weeks in helping me get what I need and letting me know what I have to do than I expected. My morale is back up and I’m so happy I stopped thinking that the guard wasn’t a REAL branch. I’ve got fingers crossed that everything goes well with my paperwork and I can join soon!

enlisted in the Guard due to covid back in 2020, thought of it as a way to help out in the fight, especially since my city and my state was significantly hard hit, 2 years later I've secured most of the benefits that come with active duty service; post 9/11 GI bill, home loan, etc etc. I'd say the pace of your career in the guard greatly depends on which state you live in or you wish to serve. I live in New York and our local government, our vicinity to DC, and the size of our state all play a part in how often we've gone on active duty orders, NYARNG soldiers were sent to help with hurricane relief in Puerto Rico, and as we speak, my sisters and brothers-in-arms from the 69th are preparing to deploy overseas.

I also was army National guard and regular army . Both can work for you; but, I highly recommend National Guard if you want to immediately go to college right after high school. Thats what I did, split option contract. 1984 BCT FORT BENNING. 1985 AIT FORT BENNING.

25 years in the National Guard. 2 tours in the middle east, multiple state side emergency deployments. When we worked with the active military units, we recieved alot of flak until they got to know our capabilities. The best I saw was when some enlisted made the comment " the Nasty Girls are here." Their 1st Sargeant said "just wait. You need something done? These guys will get it done.". We proved our selves and the regretted when my unit deployed back state side.

I did 10 years in the NG from 2007-2017 as Infantry. Loved it! Did a deployment to Afghanistan and was briefly in Kuwait & Kyrgyzstan during that deployment and also trained in Japan and Puerto Rico. I also did state activation duty for hurricanes and anti-terrorism patrols at airports and train stations. The NG also receive medals from their states, depending on the missions... Used my GI Bill for college.

It's a hit or miss with the NG. Nowadays, they do much more than their active counterparts and only receive a pprtion of the benefits while missing out on their civilian careers. For younger folks, go active first, earn your stuff and then try the reserves/NG with the shortest enlistment option.

A lot of Active guys can talk smack but in reality as NG you will have generally the same (or potentially better) opportunities for training/deployment, better benefits, the same time towards retirement, and you get to pursue a separate career and/or education more freely whilst using your benefits from the military. You also have to deal with way less BS, and the guys you work with can be pretty chill. There's definitely some tools in the NG, but you don't have to take them as seriously, and you get to deal with them way less than if you were active.

I agree with most of what you said. Only thing is active duty retirement is more $$ and you receive it immediately upon retirement where as in the Guard/Reserve, it’s less $$ and won’t collect until after 60yro. But the benefit of retiring part time is like you said, if you play your cards right, you’re earning another pension simultaneously and can diversify your financial portfolio way easier with the flexibility of serving part time. Sounds good so far, so I subscribed. With that said, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH! It's 2024. I was an Active Army Recruiter from 2008-2012 (and an Infantry Drill Sergeant from 2016-2018), so I've dealt with far too many young men and women who enlisted without knowing what they were truly signing up for. First, on Recruiters: there are career and detailed NCOs serving in the job. Take it for what you will, but a career Recruiter has a lot more incentive to do whatever it takes to get a contract. A detailed Recruiter like me volunteers or is selected (in my case) to serve around three years in recruiting. Pretty much all detailed Recruiters are Active Duty (AD). We aren't as incentivized to get contracts... I got 16 in 38 months (much of the time I served as Future Soldier Leader, though). A career Recruiter who isn't performing risks their job and worse. A detailed Recruiter might get kicked back to their MOS. Sixteen contracts in 38 months would see almost any 79R (career Recruiter) relieved. That leads to this: both Army Reserve and Army National Guard (ARNG) Recruiters are in the Active Guard Reserve (AGR). This double incentivizes them to get contracts, because they are both full-time (career) Recruiters and on Active-Duty orders. This means that if they don't perform, they go back to part-time status. Military pay sucks anyway, right? Well, there are a lot of perks to being on Active status. A small-town ARNG Soldier might make $35k/yr. in their civilian job. Given the prospect of going AGR, with various allowances and other benefits like health care for their families, they might double that as a full-time Recruiter. Case in point: a Louisiana ARNG Recruiter and I were talking years ago about the job--he an E-7 and me an E-6. He recruited in the area he lived in, essentially skipped E-6 as he'd gone AGR as an E-5 and pinned E-7 a year or two later and loved the pay and benefits. I was 1000 miles from where I grew up, had already been an E-6 for a few years, and had the full-time pay and benefits since enlisting. He couldn't understand why I wasn't going to become a 79R, while I was looking to get back to doing what I enlisted for (Infantry, MOS 11B). On to my subjective experiences. If you're considering the ARNG, don't let these deter you, but take them into consideration: As a civilian, pre-9/11, I wanted one thing: to join the Army. I started a family young, so I went to the Virginia ARNG (VARNG) in lieu of the Regular Army. I ended up having marginal blood pressure at MEPS and needed a waiver, and the next two years saw a cycle... take time off work, get BP readings, go to the recruiting office, and get told that the waiver was going to the Commonwealth Surgeon General. I'd call after a few weeks with no results and finally go back to the office, where I'd find my VARNG Recruiter had left (one went to Fort Pickett, one back to his home state of PA). Waste of time, and I let myself be given the runaround for those two years. The day after I lost my civilian job on 9/10/2001, everything lined up. The VARNG recruiting office was on a Defense Supply Center and locked down. The Regular Army recruiting office was less than a mile away and process my waiver in a matter of weeks. As an AD Recruiter, a particular Louisiana ARNG (LARNG) left his integrity and ethics behind when he took that AGR position. We'll call him SFC Clown. I found that some students were already in the LARNG, or so I thought, so I left them alone. After a few months, I'd find that many were being baited and switched, thinking they were going to MEPS that very next week only to get a call from SFC Clown that their "appointment" was cancelled. One female was all-in for going Active, but her mom was steadfast against it, as SFC Clown had cornered her in Walmart and told her that her daughter would be sent overseas for four years without any chance to come home. It took a short meeting with the mom, but the daughter enlisted to not only go Active but also Airborne. I also started having kids approach me asking to see my LES (Leave and Earnings Statement-basically a pay stub), as SFC Clown carried his to show how much more the National Guard made than Active Soldiers. He was an E-7 with 18 years in while I was an E-6 with eight years in. Naturally, he made much more than I did, but an uninformed student would just see the bottom line, enlist, and start making a few hundred a month instead of thousands. All of that to reiterate: DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH! A detailed guy like me didn't care about the numbers in the end; I enlisted to be Infantry and I retired as an Infantryman. I wanted Soldiers who could be trusted to protect my left and right. A career Active Recruiter needs the numbers to succeed. An AGR (full-time) Recruiter (Reserve or ARNG) not only needs those numbers to succeed but to keep their livelihood. Anyone who wants to serve in these times has my admiration, and there are definitely pros and cons to both Active and Reserve (including ARNG) service. Just know that the guy or gal wearing the shiny badge (or pretty ribbon if you're looking at the Marines) has more interest in taking care of themselves and their branch of service than they do you. In the end, you're a number.

I'm a biased Retiree from a slightly different generation, but I enjoy seeing all of the positive YT channels out there these days, putting out info on the Guard, Reserves, and Active experiences in each branch. Way back in 2010 I was assigned as the "social media master", which meant I had to set up Twitter and Facebook profiles for my recruiting station. I had neither at the time (and still don't have the former), so it was interesting. Now, KZbin and other platforms let Service Members (not just Recruiters) share their experiences and advice to a broad audience. I was active duty back in January 1st 2021 got all the way to blue phase before getting injured and was asked to go home and wait a year before going back in. My enlistment in the OHARNG was five years after Vietnam ended. The Kent State shooting and Hollywood movies (Rambo) depicted us as a bunch of trigger-happy morons. The truth was totally opposite. Around 70% of my unit was comprised of Vietnam veterans. These guys and a few girls really knew their shit! Learned a lot! Proud of every last one of them and I would follow them to hell and back . Based on my experience, a lot of guardsmen experiences vary mostly because different states fund their guard differently. So for example from what I've seen Indiana's guard gets fantastic funding for gear, training etc. Whereas Florida is always struggling for funds because a big chunk of them has to be allocated for possible hurricane mobilizations.

The Army is composed of three Componants: 1. Active Duty, 2. Federal Reserve, 3. National Guard. So yes the National Guard is the military and yes they are the real Army. All three componants receive the same training at the same places. I served in the Indiana National Guard from 2000 to 2008 and deployed twice. One thing to mention about the Guard is that it is easier to change your MOS. I held 11B, 11C, 19D, and 42A previously 71L. I intended to get a full time AGR position so I picked up 71L/42A which is an admin MOS to help get a UA position. Six months after being MOSQ and you decide you do not like your MOS you can reclass if there is an open slot. Take note, it is advantageous to pick an MOS that can translate to a Civilian Job. While Infantry and Cav Scout is fun and cool they really do not have a civilian equivilant unless one is a tier 1 or tier 2 operator and you will not have the oportunity to do that in the Guard. While there are Special Forces units in the guard they are typically support units and not tier 1 or tier 2. Good MOS options are: Engineer, Medic, Transportation, Aviation, Paralegal, etc. There are pros and cons to all three componants.

Annual training for the national guard will be the worst part most likely. It's 2-3 continuous weeks (meaning you don't go home each night) typically out in the field doing MOS related activities. Your experience will vary based on your MOS and assigned duties, but annual training is definitely the suckiest part of my enlistment.

I was Active duty, all I can remember was everyone calling National Guard “no goes”. I got out of Active duty joined the Guard, was pleasantly surprised at how professional they where. My Guard unit mobilized for Fires, Floods, Riots and War we deployed to Iraq and where assigned to Active Units and had better success than actual Active duty units we where assigned with. A large number of soldiers in guard units where previous active duty and brought there professionalism’s and skills with them to aid in the success of the units.

As a service-connected Army Reserve and Army/Air Force National Guard veteran, I think the biggest issue is with serving part-time is that Congress wrote a different set of laws for service-connection for Guard and Reserves. There is no Presumption of Soundness and no Presumption of Aggravation except for periods where you've been federally activated. This means that during periods of training where you aggravate an injury that started during an activation, the VA does not have to give you a presumption that your injury got worse during those periods UNLESS you have an STR for each period PLUS had a full physical before each period. But soldier's often don't complain to keep their commander's happy so what happens is that you end up making an injury worse over time, develop a permanent disability from it, but don't have enough evidence to overcome the lack of Presumptions that all active duty soldiers get when they apply for disability. I am lucky (or rather unlucky) that my injuries were well documented and diagnosed while on Title 10 orders plus had my entrance physical to show that I was sound before those injuries. Not every Guard or Reserve veteran has these and are left having to go on SSDI or SSI when their injuries get bad enough. I was proud to serve, but would warn people that if you do go part-time instead of active, that you need to make absolutely sure that you document EVERYTHING if you get injured and make triplicates of any STRs you get. If not, you could end up in a very bad spot later in life without any support from the DOD or the VA. Best, Jason

Been recruiting for about 9 years. A lot of what this guy is talking about really depends on what state you are looking at with a guard. The guard is funded in large part by state budget. Where I'm from guard Units routinely runs out of money to send their soldiers to schools, trainings etc. Also very difficult to get promoted Within many guard units. Budget wise if you are in a state that funds their guard adequately The guard can be a viable option. Northeastern States like Massachusetts and Connecticut etc etc are well known for supporting theor supporting their guard units very well

I Spent 9 years in the MN Army National Guard, My wife spent 7 years in the MN ARNG. Our Son's Regular Army recruiter knew this so he knew he couldn't lie about the Army. The down side of the guard is since we were never deployed and only in the Guard, the only Benefit I was able to keep after I got out was the VA Home loan. The Education benefits were even not usable after my wife got out of the guard, That's the reason our son is joining regular Army first so he can keep his benefits I miss the People but not the government BS.

Looking to join …Just turned 35 with a house, 2 yr career so far, 2 toddlers and newborn boys and I want to be around to raise them. Army Reserve vets say you get called upon more than the one weekend and 2 weeks per year as well to help with other non-paid drills. Age cutoff for all Army is your 35th Birthday but an age waiver is dumb easy up to 40yro and age waivers have been accepted for the meritorious up to 47yro…. Army reserves are less than the National Guard, Weekend warriors are the Reserves. The National Guard however is actually what i recommend for most people who are typically patriotic & such. In the Guard you are both Active & Guard, Your job technically is more sophisticated because you take 2 oaths One to the Federal government & Your main one to the state & the states leader over all else. Which also means They spend more time helping the country or your state. Which is why i first joined the National Guard Because the active military's spend most of their time not helping the country but rather helping other country's for the most part. But the Guard while you will go to war & help other country's, Its primary purpose is to help your country & your state, Rather than doing it for other country's. Natural Disaster aide is one of the biggest. To dumb it down Active military are mostly securing other countrys borders to help the country. National Guard Secures our borders to secure the countrys future. WHich is why chose the Guard. 4:18 That Law is real but there are company's that do it anyway, or make sure they don't give you the same job back. The Academy at Ivy Ridge wouldn't even let me return when i came back. & since i needed to make money i didn't have the time or knowhow to do anything about it. So while they exist, its not 100% guaranteed & there is some fighting you might have to do, to get some places to honor it. Just as there is some business's that won't even let you shop at thier place of business if your in the army. I ran into that as well in GA. 4:54 You know them recruiters though be trying to force you into combat roles, its what happened to me. 11B & 98 X-Ray baby.

i was in the Army National Guard for 17 years and 3 years active duty i did my 20 and got out and retired. The National Guard is ok it depends on the unit sometimes it sucks and sometimes it's fun it just depends just like any job. It has a lot of perks though like the medical insurance is the bomb Tricare is awesome DO IT! The pay is a bonus also :) and the food is free and you will get free stuff know and then in the guard :)

My understanding is the federal government provides at least 90% of the funding for the National Guard. How about when the National Guard is used for a strictly state function. Does the federal government fund that or is that strictly state responsibility? An example is state governors sending state troops to the U.S./Mexico border. Financially is that strictly a state responsibility?

I don’t have the legit answer but from what I’ve gathered over the years in my experience to date is obviously the state makes money through their residents in various ways and the state receives federal monies that are used for various things. It’s up to the state to use it how it sees fit. State Active Duty is through the state and at times funds it’s received through the federal government through the federal budget. One benefit of the national guard is rsp (recruit sustainment program) if your a junior in high school you can go to rsp during your junior year and learn about what you will be doing during basic, while getting paid for it. Then you will complete basic during the summer and go back to rsp during your senior year.

My National Guard grandson just finished AIT. The Army invited to Ranger school. He'll start in early January at Fort Moore. He likes the Army so well that he's thinking of going to college, joining ROTC, getting a commission and then trying to switch to full time Army. He'll be drilling while in ROTC. Here's my question: does his drilling time count when it comes to calculating his pay? Also, this is a bit big to ask, but what would his budget look like while he's in ROTC. I know Michigan will pay his tuition, I know he'll get a stipend from ROTC. Are there any other sources of income associated with ROTC and his plan?

The guard is capable, some unites are second to no unit active or reserve. So long as politics is keep at bay and discipline is enforced. I have see units that meet muster and I have seen units that act like a scout troop because the commanders hands are tied by the AG not wanting to upset people.

I was in the guard for 15 years. Drill weekends are almost NEVER 2 days. You're doing Friday Saturday and Sunday at minimum. Usually only December is 2 days. ESGR CAN protect you. If you're good standing within the guard. Yes...say you failed a PT test last drill? ESGR will not support you if your employer fires you next month. While the laws exist. Most employers don't care, or will find a reason to fire you. (Ive been fired multiple times for my service in the guard) And Typically....just go get another job. They weren't worth it to work for anyway. If your state is a fire at will state it makes it much easier for them to do this. Deployments. Boy. I served 15 years during GWOT and don't have an Afghan campaign medal? Yep. How many times did I volunteer? I couldn't tell you how many requests I put in to MOBCOP to deploy to Afghanistan. I never went. I served in Iraq 08/09 and went to Jordan in 19/20. Yes. 9 years of me volunteering to go and being told no. Remember, these activations make it difficult to maintain a healthy relationship with a civilian employer. 🤙 If you go special forces in the guard.... You're pretty much going AD anyway. 🤣🤣 Those guys need to train so much to maintain readiness and meet their standards that You're probably better off going regular Army for that route. Split op is fucking horrible. I did it. You get ostracized by the drills because you don't go to AIT after basic, or don't finish OSUT. Up to and including being called a traitor or a coward. Just enjoy HS while it lasts. Join the Army after. No. Benefits ARE NOT the same. And this i would say is so far the only thing that is close to being a flat out lie. He makes no mention of the post 9/11 GI bill. Which is probably the best deal out there for GI bill. It's only available to those who serve 3 years of active duty. It is only eligible for the guard and reserve if they have a total of 3 years on Active Duty. 1 year on AD unlocks 60% 2 years on AD unlocks 80% and 3 years unlocks 100%. This is a benefit you could practically miss out on in the guard. I know guys in the guard with almost 20 years and don't even have their first 60% of that GI bill. The Montgomery GI bill doesn't compare to P9/11. But talk to a school Veteran rep about that stuff. Also, in my experience state tuition assistance is sometimes competed for. Based on state. So say you're not the fastest runner? Say you don't have the BEST grades but you're still passing your classes? Sorry. Open them pockets you gotta help pay for school that your recruiter said you wouldn't have to. When you get called up on state orders you get State Active Duty Pay or, SAD pay. And boy. It's SAD as fuck. It's usually something like $40 to $60 a day, has nothing to do with your rank or time in grade. And you usually get this check after you complete the duty in paper form. But this is case by case depending on state. SAD orders don't come often, but they suck. Sometimes they can't even feed you. I've seen local communities coming out to help feed the guard during wild fire response in WA because the state couldn't afford to feed us or get the food out to us. Pay. Oh holy shit. Well, pay is straight forward. Now....May the odds be ever in your favor. I've had multiple months back to back where I wasn't paid by my unit. The beautiful irony is when I got out I owed the guard money for being over paid from one set of orders when the guard still owned me drill pay for three months of drills years in the past. Bonus? Good luck. They'll say you're entitled to one. You have a bonus addendum. You haven't fucked up to lose your bonus. But the bonus system will have "issues" your unit will say. I personally had a subordinate soldier get told by state HRC that he would have to reenlist AGAIN to get the bonus he was owed from his last contract. That if he got out they couldn't process the payment for that bonus. I've never had an issue with my bonuses getting paid. But I've seen dozens of other soldiers get absolutely screwed. Last cherry on top. No, you cannot transfer to the regular Army while in the guard. Is there a pipeline for that? Yes. Good luck getting that form approved tho. I served in the WA Army NG for 15 years. 03/19/07 - 03/19/22. I separated honorably as a SSG. While I do not regret joining overall. I did things I never would of done elsewhere. I observed the prior AD soldiers in my units have better benefits and were much more proficient in their MOS than guys who were 100% guard. It all comes down to what you want to do. But If I could do it all over again, I would of done a 4 year active duty tour, then got out to the guard. You get all the benefits of active duty service aside from retirement. You get better financial assistance for school. 😊

As far as your comments on the Benefits to the National Guard. I’m assuming you didn’t understand or confused. So I’ll help clarify some mix up on your understanding. This video is primarily about the National Guard and the benefits of part time service, which includes the Reserves. When I speak on the Federal Benefits for the Guard, Reserve… they are in fact the same and I’m not going to type what I clearly and concisely stated within the video. My account is primarily for those who are joining and being that this video is about the Guard, they don’t get Post 9-11 GI Bill unless they complete 90+ consecutive days of qualifying Federal Active Service. Which is why I didn’t mention it within this video. Post 9-11 GI Bill breakdown by percentages for qualifying federal active service is on this official VA Website: www.va.gov/resources/how-we-determine-your-percentage-of-post-911-gi-bill-benefits/ State TA is dependent on each State; LINK: state.nationalguard.com/ As for SAD and pay; I don’t know how other states do it but when I did SAD 2002-2004, I was making more than my base pay but no BAH. Currently, it goes by Rank and if eligible for BAH, we get that now as well. Just because something was the way it was “back in the day,” doesn’t mean things haven’t changed. If you go active duty first and find you made a mistake and want out, only way out is to finish your contract. Hi! I came across your video while looking for info about my 17 year old son wanting to join the national guard. I’m concerned about his decision because he has Asperger’s . He’s an honor roll student, very smart but his social skills are different from any “ normal” individual. He’s got just about 2 friends to be honest, and I don’t know if that could be a problem when working as a team. Currently he’s got 2 years in the ROTC at school. He’s not into any type of medication. Have some genuine dialogue with your spouse and ask good questions to understand her concerns and the by behind the why, behind the why. I’d go through the entire process in passing the ASVAB, medical exam and any other possibly hurdles and then have a serious discussion on whether or not working approximately 56 days per year is going to be too much for you. In my experience, most of the time it’s just explaining how we work, what we do and address long their concerns. Which is typically addressing myths or misconceptions. The way I see it is the Army/Air National Guard is a great deal for a prior service individual. I did 6 years in the US Navy and 22 more years in the Army National Guard. For someone just coming in it is not. You go to the same basic training, and the same schools as active duty personal but than you return to your state to drill. You are better off doing the active duty time because that gives you veterans benefits. Which you do not get in the Guard. Your active duty time counts as points for you retirement pay from the Guard.
