I took out the brand new BMW R1300GSA for a quick first ride the other week, whilst my own R1300GS was in having the ‪@QDEXHAUSTOFFICIAL‬ Headers fitted at Group1 Motorrad in Brighton.
Here are my first ride thoughts.

I rode one, it does everything you expect it to do very very well but i didn't feel it was hugely different to the 1250GS it replaced and certainly not enough to warrant shelling out the huge asking price. Then I rode the Triumph Tiger 1200 GT Pro and and instantly it felt a more characterful and engaging motorbike, it put a grin on my face and I chose that over the new GS. All about personal choice isn't it, different bikes suit different people for loads of different reasons.

@@MayorofDipshittery-lq7if me too, 1300 looks better (for me) but the new features have been a mixed bunch. Some improvements, some neither better nor worse and some worse (CBS, electric windshield etc.). It wasn't enough when a better bike (MTS) has been available for a few years.

Great video Bruce, nice tip at the start with the engine modes…like the sound of almost a wheelie mode..😂 I actually took delivery of a triple black 1300 GSA this morning with forged wheels and can only describe the ride as sensational! With the higher seat, and windscreen, i think it would change the geometry enough for you to get used to the new tank width and screen protection, my comfort is sublime. I honestly love this bike to bits…best bike i have ever ridden. Super review mate.

Nice first impressions video on the new GSA. I also ride a standard 1300 GS and when tested this GSA , not the green one with the low seat and the shorter windshield, but the Triple black with full extras excluding the ASA device. My overall impressions are similar to what you mentioned. I also felt that on an hour test ride is difficult to get ourselves very easy adapted to this machine but I got the impression that my 1300 GS feels somehow perceptible faster and the force of the whole structure against the asphalt is sensibly stronger, demanding more effort from the Tyres . I loved the bigger protection of the bike in every way compared to the 1300 GS, which is good but on this GSA it’s superb. If I can get the deal I need, I’m seriously thinking in swapping! Ride safe and keep on the wonderful work here. This was very useful for confirmation purposes. Thanks 🤘

…..because ASA could help some people with joint or muscular issues, or just want to pootle about for long distances…. I have a standard 1300 GS but I am interested in trying a GS adventure with ASA to see if it still gives you the same enjoyment as a manual and to see if it helps me enjoy riding for longer
@Fernando90054
@Fernando90054 3 ай бұрын
That’s the same order of reasons why I tested the new GSA. And in my opinion, the potential is all there. The ASA is from my point of view a game changer and it compensates the loss of superior agility and nimbleness of the standard 1300 GS. I also feel that the Standard GS is easier to ride faster on roads with semi intense traffic but the higher position of the GSA and the mass of the bigger structure play a part on longer rides at faster paces. The difference of this new GSA to the GS is much more sensible on this generation than the predecessor 1250 cc bikes. Aesthetically, I applaud the audacity of the new GSA design. In fact I’m ok with the 1300 GS, but the 1300 GSA corrected for me some aspects that weren’t brilliant on the GS. For instance the Matrix front light is much more harmonious inserted on the GSA than on the GS. Now these two bikes are two very different proposals. In my case, I was using to ride on solo the 1300 GS and it was fine. But when I got a pillion at the back seat I felt cramped there against the gas tank. On the GSA there’s room for two people with all the comfort for short or longer rides, for traveling without worrying to stop so often. Points against:- The price is a barrier and next is to get skilled dominating this big bike on general diverse and adverse road conditions, on asphalt and when appropriate, off road, because it’s these bikes DNA. We must not forget that marvelous virtue. This new GSA sets the flame on and it’s a defiant machine to achieve a dominant behavior riding it on every different occasion and occurrence we can face for an average rider. It complies but we must apply ourselves and for me that’s what makes it interesting!

I think the ASA is great and really can help in situations like traffic jams or on long rides. Still I've decided against it. My reasoning is, that I've switched to electric driving with our car, and I want to keep at least one "old school" vehicle that reminds me how it was in the old days, and gives the driver actually something to do and master the machine. And that includes a combustion engine, manual gear switching, and clutch.
@Fernando90054
@Fernando90054 3 ай бұрын
@@valuemastery perfectly understandable. I still cherish my BMW R nine T, not just because of the same reasons but because it claims for another behavior from the riders brain and body and that is something valuable that we shouldn’t lose focused on the marvelous technology of today! Keep on posting. See if can bring us more details about experience with this newer machinery (maybe pointing the faults of it, once that in the present is difficult to find them). Thanks for replying 👍🏻

A bikermate of mine with a 1300 rode the 1300GSA ASA. One of the many positive comments he gave was that the ASA alleviated the crappy GSAP issues on the GS. He had a £9K gap to buy the new one. He is going to do the deal. That's an expensive solution to a jerky gearbox below 3rd gear going up. I think we are approaching maximum madness with this.

Good Day Bruce, recently had a chance to sit on a new 1300GSA here in Florida, it had just come out of the box… I was on a mission to test ride BMW’s, rode the K1600GT, K1600GA, the S1000XR, R1250GSA.. I am not a fan of how the 1300’s look, but have to say in all sincerity that having called the GSA an Igloo Cooler on wheels I found it not overly offensive. Still prefer the 1250GSA looks and picked up a Blue Rally GSA R1250GSA model, this will be my second GS style bike, and love the physical size of the machine. Have a couple other bikes that are larger in size as well. Harley Road Glide ST, Indian Challenger Darkhorse. *The best part is that BMW is giving huge discounts on the 2024’s.

Just completed a 2 hour test rideout today (sat 9th Nov) from Chester to Bala and back, these are my findings (comparison to existing bike - see end): Smoother eager engine (midrange+ very strong/frightening), easy to ride very fast as much less vibration feedback, notcy gear change (newness perhaps), quickshifter change not much difference, seat firm, ride firm, less flickable (needed more input to countersteer). That said about the seat/ride, I rode for 2 hours but my ass was fine. Current bike is an R1200GS LC TE (62k miles). No deal breakers from what I can see.

Good one Bruce, get practicing the splits! I have a 73 plate 1300 and tried the GSA this week. Like you I loved, it far from the lardy big bro, it was the same but a bit better in most areas than the GS. Felt manageable in the car park wheeling it about. Tank width at the legs I noticed but then quickly forgot about, I think the bars may be slightly wider as it peeved my dodgy shoulder a bit. The handling and ride, superb. I won't be swapping anytime soon but feel it's the better bike out of the two and not something you buy just for a bigger fuel tank and more rugged looks.

My Yamaha FZ1 had kind of a wide tank. I loved the bike, but I would get a cramp in my hip about every other time I would ride it. I would be riding down the road, standing up, because I was trying to get rid of the cramp. I ended up trading it in for a ZX14R and no more cramping.

Owned a GSA 1200 a decated remapped one for ten years. Loved it stonking bike. After over 45 years of riding bikes and them getting heavier every year decided sell the GSA sell my other very tuned KTM 950 sm with the very small depreciation over many years afforded me a Yamaha T7 and Honda CrF 300 rally. Yamaha Tenere fully sorted tuning wise is a far better bike than a lardy GS . Honda CRF with remap will cruise at 80mph all day long and is like riding a mountain bike. Only chore is having chains to maintain. I don't miss trying to pick up a GSA in the middle of nowhere. They are road bikes that may do offroad but no use at all in wet stuff.

The GSA does look good, then the 1300GS also looks good, much better than the 1250GS. De-CAT, I'm sure it would make a difference. I have a 2022 Pan America Special, and I fitted a V&H muffler, it made a massive difference to the low end power, below 5000RPM, and above, plus the sound is fantastic, with the pop on deceleration. No change to fuel consumption, and it still has the CAT.

I am going to be the contrarian to your comment, the 1300 GS is a small and not handsome machine (IMO), the GSA actually looks better in person but still not as nice as the 1250GSA. The only thing that the 1300 has over the 1250 is the ACC, and blind spot monitoring. IMO… The 2024 actually feels and looks bigger than the new smaller 1300’s.

I’ve test ridden the new GSA twice. The handling is miles better than the old 1250. The ASA quick shifter is as smooth as butter. The larger screen option gives great wind protection (I’m 6ft3). The only downsides were the seat which was way too hard and the ride which also was way too hard, even in road mode. I would definitely upgrade from my 1250 if the bike was more comfortable, but both test rides left me with a numb bum after an hour and that’s just not acceptable on a touring bike.

I tested it on friday.🙂 Did you go into the settings menu and adjust the damping? It is adjustable between -2 and +2. Road mode can be set up to any of those alternatives. Maybe the guy who rode the bike before you set the damping to the firmest (+2) setting. Like you, i am very concerned about comfort, and with the damping in -2, it was very nice. I agree about the seat, even though after two hours of riding, it felt ok.

@@matsrekdal3065 Unfortunately, adjusting that setting is only possible if you purchase the dynamic package - and it still doesn't solve the problem of the rock hard seat - which regrettably was of bigger concern.

Good review, enjoyed. Not yet been to see a GSA in the metal let alone ride, but sounds like the new GSA has regained that bit of old GS/GSA " substance" The new GS looks and feels like it's skewed a bit more to a sporting profile ( relatively speaking! it's still a 240kg motorcycle..) while the new GSA will tick boxes for the traditionalists. Very interested-and a touch concerned though- to hear your thoughts about the wider tank. One of the reasons I ended up on a 1250GS was that the narrower pegs/tank riding position relative to the competition much reduced hip pain for me by taking it out of the more splayed angle that triggered issues. Hoping to have the hip issue sorted by the end of the year but suspect I might still be sensitive to riding position (might well dictate GS over GSA but you're right,need to ride both with a open mind) So thanks for the puff/spin free review, hope you're getting the miles on the new pipes coz they're sounding good :)

My R1300GS quickshifter had the "pause" between 5th and 6th which was sometimes a bit of a pain, I took it in to get it looked at where they updated the software and apparently reinitialised the shifter and now it is a LOT smoother, very occasionally get a small glitch but much less often and severe than before.

We came to the conclusion BMW aren't targeting the now much older audiences, the type who have probably bought a 1250gs and it will be their last big bike. BMW are targeting a younger audience and it shows in the general response. It's an amazing bike, and I'm going from a Ducatie to a BMW GSA, which is what BMW wants.

Nice bike, probably not the one for me. I like my standard GS. Comfort is the interesting question, Long distance, long day comfort is why I really like my GS.

Saddle looks quite narrow at the front, does this help you get your feet flatter?

I do wonder if we (bikers) really NEED all the electronic options…..I’m perfectly happy riding my 2002 VFR with none of the modern stuff! Bit like smart TV’s…..don’t need all the gizmos, just want to switch on and watch! Re: running in, not as necessary with modern bikes as the engineering/ manufacturing tolerances are much tighter than, for example 1960’s bikes when QC was somewhat lacking.

I’m 5’9” and 10.5 stone wet through. Sat on the 1250gsa at the bike show and bought a late low suspension 18 plate gsa on the strength of it. Just could not quite afford the new 1250 at the time. I feel in a bubble of calm the whole time and can’t find anything the bike doesn’t do well. You get used to the fat tank.

If you get the 1300 gs with the sports suspension I assume it will be the same chassis as the 1300 ADV

You mentioned the Ducati Multistrada so it's worth asking this question: why would you buy the GS over one of them?

Engine whined on the one I tried and seat as hard as hell more clunky gear changes than my 1250 gsa

See when you talked about getting rid of the whining sound, your exhaust won't get rid of it, it's the final drive, the big cog in the rear wheel hub..

Can you Bruce, or someone, explain why you dislike ASA so much? It seems most riders like it, with an occasional rider getting poor gear changes which I think is due to a mis-adjusted bike, because so many others are very smooth. Have I missed a video with a review of it?

When I took my test ride, it was a hell of a bike, and I liked it more than the 1300GS, but it's too big and pricey to warrant replacing my 1250RS. FYI - I've recently seen a couple of 1300GS second-hand fully spect at around 18k on local dealers' forecourts.

Comparatively low revving at 70 mph. Does it have a taller 6th gear or taller gearing in general?

Bmw r1100gs was the best. In its day there was just nothing like it. Brutalist Germnaic design at its finest. That’s before they started looking like corporate CEO vibe of the 1200/1250 bikes. Nice to see them getting back to the brutalism, but they are still not there yet!
