I already decided and the answer is no. There is a better bike, I was wondering if GS catches up to Multistrada but it seems they were aiming more for the SAS instead. Somehow they felt the need to add so many electronic features such as the windshield which work worse than the manual ones (Triumph did a smart thing to remove it from their Tiger 1200), or combined brakes which make it hard to judge the force. They could have instead improved function of the suspension when riding fast or put a better clutch - KTM and Ducati have clutches that are much easier to modulate. Or redesign the electronic, the controls on GS were always a bit confusing and now are even more so. (Although ofc KTM and Ducati need the clutch more due to the boxer working from very low RPMs - something Multistrada tries to overcome with short gearing but only does maybe 80-90% job.) Since I'm quite tall, the GS being very small (even smaller than the 900) is also a con for me. Overall, is the GS a great and well made bike? Yes. Is Multistrada superior to it, apart from the price and fuel consumption? Also yes.

After 20 odd years of everyday riding, my last bike was a Transalp that I sold in 2011. Since then and for 12 years I haven't rode even once! Last week I decided to test ride the GS 1300. Went to the dealership, signed the papers, collected all my courage and jumped on the seat. And lo and behold the miracle happened, the whole riding program reloaded on my brain in one second! Off I go then, and the bike is a-m-a-z-i-n-g! What a beast of a machine! I would never have guessed technology went so far! I think I'm getting it! Thank you for this review!

I own a R1300GS, Trophy with all options. I absolutely love the power, torque and the overall handling. The adaptive cruise works great, blind spot monitors work great and the adaptive ride height works great. just over 1 month ago (bike has just over 2000 miles) I went outside to ride my bike, complete loss of any electrical power, couldn't even unlock the steering lock without a jump. I contacted BMW roadside assistance and they had a tow truck out within a few hours to have my bike taken to the nearest shop (same dealership I bought it from). My bike is still there. Bike arrived 09/04 and it's now 10/14. During its long stay at the shop they did the starter relay recall and then also noticed the rear suspension was saying the reservoir was over full. Dealership ordered the replacement reservoir for the suspension but it still has not arrived but sounds like an easy enough fix. However, the only reason the bike is even there is still not fixed even after being there for over a month. The service writer claims the techs are working with BMW trying to figure out the loss of power and why the battery went dead. At one point I was told the bike may have a 1/2 amp draw when all is off. Then I was told the tech may have read the instrument wrong. Anyways, I'm now working with BMW customer support on either getting a new bike entirely or them working directly with the dealer to get the issue resolved. Not here to bash the bike, I absolutely love it! Not sure anymore truly what to do now....not quite sure if trust it...what if more problems down the road. We'll see what is offered through BMW.

I forgot to mention one thing that is super important to touring riders. Wind management. This thing has the best smooth flowing wind management of any bike I’ve ever rode. On my Harley’s and sport touring bikes I was always trying the latest shield or laminar lip in the quest to get smooth comfortable air without much success. The GS1300 just flat out kills it there. I dont even raise my electric shield up, it works so well! And a quick comment on pricing. Yes it’s a ton of money. But from what I see they hold their value a lot better than most anything else. My ktm and Triumphs dropped like a rock, and everyone knows how normal Ducati models values drop like a rock. 50k mile BMWs still sell used for good money. Who’s buying a used triumph/ktm/ducati with 50k on it? And be honest, I’ve owned and loved them all and I know from personal experience!

I test rode so many bikes before deciding on multistrada V4. I personally feel like there’s nothing out there that looks sensational and rides like a Ducati Multistrada V4S in adventure touring segment. On freeways, there is no discussion at all.

@nogerboher52665 ай бұрын
Whether it's adventure touring or just good ol' road touring, the things that should be very first, on the very top of your priority list when choosing a bike for that purpose, are, in order; 1. Reliability, 2. Center of Gravity and Weight Distribution of the bike, 3. The ability to fix and/or replace most things on the bike by yourself anyplace/anytime, 4. Environmental and debris protection, 5. Ergonomics and 6. Suspension. And BMW R GS bikes already lose 3 out of these 6 very important check marks. Over the years I did a lot of touring and adventure touring around Europe and Asia, including almost the entire Trans Euro Trail (I did about 88,000 out of 106,000 kilometers of the TET) and many other famous trails and routes, on many different bikes and with many different groups and moto clubs. The amount of times we had to adjust/change routing or wait for/stop or even put our trip to a halt because of BMW GS (and KTM) bikes and riders is more than I can count, whether it was because of reliability issues, inability to fix something or deal with the issue on the spot or just something really simple that would be a non-issue on other bikes... ADV bikes from KTM, Ducati and BMW are more of a weekend/holiday road touring bike type, than anything else. There's a reason why the starbucks stereotype exists for these bikes 😅

If i cant find one to rent I cant justify any price on something Ive never tried as my new daily commuter. :( such a bummer.
@nielsmeer5 ай бұрын
@@nogerboher5266I’m not sure I agree on the premise. While there are some limitations on roadside repairs with the newer GSs, mostly having to do with electronics, most of the mechanicals are easier to work on than many other bikes. I’ve had my 2012 R1200GSA since I bought it new at the end of 2011. It is still going strong. I took it on a solo BDR last summer, so reliability had to be there. Not a single issue. I had 2 other GSs before this one and no issues on them either. To be fair, the newer water cooled boxer GSs especially since the shift cam are more complicated mechanically. Would that be a night & day difference from the earlier GSs? It’s really not that uncommon for BMW bikes to reach well over 100K miles on them, many hitting 250K. I was on a day ride to two states away last weekend and one of the other GSs with us was an R1100GS with 115K miles. We also had a R1200GSA water cooled and a R1250GS plus a 2006 Goldwing & an RT. None of them had any issues.

Thank you for the objective evaluations you do on these bikes. After a lifetime of riding mostly off road, competition at a high level, I bought a '23 KTM 890 Adventure S. I thought a lighter bike would be a little easier for me in my dotage (I'll be 70 the end of this year). I'm used to riding big horsepower. I was looking at the GS 1250, but bought the KTM because it was lighter and I stumbled on a deal that I couldn't refuse. With this review of the GS 1300, I'm going to re-visit the BMW for the electronics, the ride and handling. It's more than adequate for the off-roading I'll do with it. All I ride with the KTM is 98% on-road. Thank you for helping put a dent (BIG DENT) in my checking account. When you buy something expensive that returns high value in experience, and is actually what you want, one never thinks about the cost after the initial pain of buying it. Tomorrow I will have the run-in service done and than it is time to open that throttle up for the first time (for some reason I never did that on the test ride, never felt the urge I guess). This is my first bike after 9 years of a forced break (health) and I am so confident in riding it already. It is crazy. I personally like the front a lot. Right from the very first video that was released by BMW, but I understand it is personal. I don´t mind the controls except for not being backlit, but I am not used to the controls from older BMWs, so I have a slightly different view on it I guess. The comfort seems to be a topic. I have done a 6.5 hrs ride last weekend and I started to feel my but and right knee towards the end. Might be because I haven´t ridden in so long and might need to get some flexibility into my legs again. But we will see about it latest in August, when I do multiple trips with a couple of thousand km. In worst case I have Touratech, Wunderlich. Hornig and SW Motech here in Germany. One of them will be able to provide a good seat alternative for sure. By the way, on friday the GSA video will drop on the BMW Motorrad KZbin channel. From the light signature shown, it will have a similar front light but looks like thin stripes for aux lights. Really interested to see what it will bring besides the confirmed automatic gearbox option.

You always are thorough! My 1250 has to last me for the rest of my life. I'm 67 so that might not be long!~ One thing you mentioned briefly but would make all the difference for me if I had to choose was specifically the foot pegs. I tried the very first Harley adventure bike before I bought my R1250 GSA. The peg setting and the combination of my old knees didn't work at all! Plus it took the Harley five tries to crank. My 2022 R 1250 GSA fits just right. For two years I haven't been able to stand up on the pegs like you young guys do. That is until I had a Radio Frequency ablation. They fried three nerves on each knee. (I told the Dr my nerves were already fried) Three days later I can stand up on the pegs. I'm not doing any S curves standing up and probably not going through waist deep water yet. But The fact is you mentioned the peg setting being different and that means a lot to older riders. Ian, I have met guys that want an adventure bike that stop me. They can tell me more about my bike than I know. That's because they can recall your videos practically word by word. They want to have a bike so bad but can't make the purchase just yet. Your videos are good for the riding world! Ride on!

I totally agree with your conclusion. The 1300 GS is my first BMW, and having previously owned a Tiger 1200 Rally Pro, I can confidently say the GS is the best bike I've ever had. While the Tiger is excellent, the GS surpasses it with its superior engine, chassis, and dampers, which significantly enhance road handling. The comprehensive electronic package, including ACC, is another major advantage. However, it's not without its flaws. It's expensive compared to the Tiger 900 and similar models, although the Multistrada V4 is also costly.

BigRock, congrats on your incredible new GS! I've been a fan of your channel since first watching your Africa twin reports a while back. I love your style of reports very much so not much to change i think, you have it nailed in a very genuine and authentic way. That GS is a beast - I find myself oddly drawn to it. I've had a 2014 Multistrada GT as my main bike (also a DR650 & 125 Monkey!) since new and found it more recently unreliable in that typical Italian way. I am 'nearly' certain I'll get either a '24 or '25MY Africa Twin ('25 supercharged?!) but you've got me 2nd guessing myself with this GS now. LOL, the way you spoke about the Africa Twin I thought THAT would be your forever bike 🙂The AT with DCT seemed like my dream bike with the tons of low-mid torque making up for the 'lowish' 100hp. Funny, 0-100kph times are within half a second compared with 1250GS! Anyway, we'll see what the '25MY brings. thank you for your great vid series of reports - you're one of the very best on YT no risk. Cheers from Sydney Australia.

Responding to your question "Would you buy the GS or something else? Why or why not?". Tricky one for me. I had a R1250GS, very competent bike although too heavy for me. I confess that I bought it out of a sort of "peer pressure", the mates I ride with all ride GSs. Did 36 000 km on it in two years. I never really bonded with the engine and the gearbox. The engine is flawless performance-wise. But I found it to be too noisy (specially on the highway) and very "mechanically busy". Switched to a Kawasaki Ninja 1000sx sport tourer. Fell in love with the unctuosity of the inline-4 and the perfect gearbox compared to the GS. The problem is that the roads are getting ever worse and on my trips with my friends we always tend to hit some unforeseen unpaved stints so, perfectly as the Ninja fits me, I'm gravitating back to the adventure segment. Would I buy the GS? Probably, if I can afford it (the price for one now is almost 10 000€ dearer than 5 years ago when I bought mine, even if there's more tech on it now). The adaptive ride hight and the ASA (the clutchless gearbox, I won't be riding a manual flat-twin again, I'm not convinced by their gearboxes) are pulling me towards it. Right now on paper, I would prefer the Africa Twin Adventure Sports but I haven't ridden either of the two bikes. Less power, yes, but I've read that it's pretty useful grunt what the AT produces and would cost me at least 8000€ less. Tough call. If possible I would rent each one for a weekend to make up my mind, just an hour of test riding isn't enough. That's why your work is very much appreciated. Regards

To combat the pricing: Buy used from an individual. Nationwide there will always be a near-new bike for sale privately. No tax, some depreciation, and if paying in cash to an overextended buyer needing out of a loan, good leverage for negotiating. Still have a factory warranty. As for the multi-bike aspect, agree 100%. It is a one and done garage for many. "already a pig anyway". Once again Ian, you nailed it.

Interesting feedback and honest review, thanks ! There's on thing you didn't mention I think, it is the removal of the brake light in favor of the dual function turn indicators. For someone riding everyday it is a real big issue in terms of security and rear visibility. I see some 1300GS on the road in the traffic, filtering before me and their rear visual signature is not good compared to other bikes and my 1200GS. It raises the risk of getting hit both by cars or other riders not paying the right attention. A strange decision when BMW added radar and auto cruise at the same time !

I agree. My riding buddies nearly rear ended me first time out as they couldn't see the indicators (blinkers?) when I was breaking. I fitted the Weiser Technik control unit and a Denali rear light and brake cluster (6 LEDs) that fits under the rear licence plate.

R1200GS owner. For all the hoopla, I think they missed the mark. Adaptive Height? If you can't fit on it, find a smaller bike. 99% of bikes cater to "average height" riders. There are plenty to choose from. Being 6-5, the GS is the only reasonably comfortable do it all bike. Now, I have to contend with units arriving with adaptive height as an option I don't need, and it affects the off-road travel similar to the low susp option. Also, the new footpeg placement makes it more uncomfortable for taller riders. Huh? Greeeaaatt. Adaptive cruise? I imagine you'll have to downshift/upshift anyway as your speed changes and there are way more safety factors to consider riding a bike vs setting adaptive cruise on a car. Blind spot warning? Again, for a car(with big blind spots), it makes sense. For a bike, I'm still looking with my eyes for obvious reasons. More electric gizmos we don't NEED. In a nutshell, they could have spent more energy on the engine, suspension, ride ergos/switchgear/seat, etc and made it about the same price as a R1250GS and it would be flying off the showroom floor. Instead, they loaded it with tech most riders could do without (especially ADV riders) and priced it too high, hence, driving potential customers towards used1250's and other options. The 1300 GSA will do the same except for a very small few with gobs of $$. The silver lining? My old GS has gone up in value.

I have a Gen 3 KTM 1290 SAS and would never trade it for any bike, including the 1300 GS, but there's no doubt the 1300 still a great bike, if priced exorbitantly high. Nice to know the sport touring tires were really good on this bike. I use my 1290 as just a big sport tourer with little to no offroad, so sport tourers are what I'm looking at putting once the factory tires are done, but will see. At any rate, glad you are enjoying this bike. Have fun with it!!

Hill start can be a trap that cost me a tip over once (1250GS): When you are stopped in Neutral with the brake "locked" on an incline, with the engine running, for example while trying to talk to someone, and then decide to turn off the engine because it's too loud: The bike rolls away from under you because the brake releases then. Why couldn't they keep the brake on as long as the ignition is on? Also, mine randomly releases the hill-assist standing on a mild hill, e.g. at a light, but only sometimes. Anyone else has seen this too? And since I am at it: My "Trip Computer" that zeroes itself every morning automatically, sometimes just starts counting form 0.6 miles (1 km?) rather than from zero. SW glitch?

I think you do great reviews, I like your attention to detail. I have the same bike, and in the past I've had the 1200 and two 1250s, great bikes but as you said, this is better. Yes, the front light... well, I don't like it either but we will get used to it in the future, I am sure. The thing I like the most about the bike is the handling. The thing i like the least is the sound. Because it handles the way it does and the fact you can spend all day on it (today I've done 800 km, 500 on motorway and 300 on twisties) nothing else really matter for me. I have other bikes and over the years had many different bikes and I can say in all confidence: this is the best overall bike ever, as simple as that. So, that said, please leave the price alone... anyone who can afford one, will buy it and the guys who might not afford one right now they will buy it second hand and it will still be a great buy. They will then see the HUGE difference between the GS and the Tiger for example, at least on twisty roads. So, without slagging off any other makes, ugly light, high price and shitty soundtrack are not negative enough to outweigh what this bike does well and this is why it is the best and sells the way it does.

I am leaning towards the Multi Rally bc my dealer is 45 miles away versus 140 miles away from me and I think the ride and overall quality will be a tad better with the Ducati. I have had GS's before and they are special and I kind of bond with them but, this new V4 Rally just looks like the best in class bike to beat. I agree with you that adaptive ride-height is the perfect solution for shorter riders. I'm fairly tall, but locally I watch shorter riders mounting and dismounting their GS's, often with passengers, and I'm usually wincing in anticipation of a tip-over. While I think the GS is a great touring bike, I'm happy with my RT plus a DZR for the dirt. There is no way I'd take anything as heavy as the GS off-road. Too hard to pick up and too expensive to fix!

Absolutely the best review I’ve seen so far on the new GS. I’m waiting on the GSA and am seriously considering moving up from my GSA1200. The biggest concern you have given me is the ergonomics and seat comfort. At 6.2 and 220 I can’t afford less leg space and a harder seat. And at the price not wanting to upgrade the seat. I love all the new tech and strongly agree that the lack of control backlighting is ridiculous at this price. Jesus the Goldwing had it twenty years ago. We’ll see what this Friday brings and if the new GSA is what I hope for. Or I’ll be shopping for the last of the 1250’s.

I own an R1300GS Trophy, with complete road setup, and I basically agree with all your observations on the pros and cons. However, regarding saddle comfort and aesthetics my opinion is more positive. In general, I consider the 1300 improved compared to the 1250, let alone compared to my previous 1200 LC. Naturally, before buying it I tried the competition several times (Ducati and KTM in particular), but I understood that the R1300GS is more suited to my motorcycling expectations and needs. At the moment I am very satisfied. Warm greetings from Italy.

I like the front of it, probably since the screen is lower when I have no adaptive cruise. With the standard rear seat, it looks like an NC750 from the side, and thats ugly. I noticed the same as Ryan F9 with hill hold, but I talked to the dealer and read the user manual, so controlling the revs helps. I am not a friend of the gearbox yet ;-) and I do not like the Metzeler knobblies on the tarmac/asphalt. But overall I love the bike and really like the way it looks. I was surpriced over the US prices, about the same as in Norway. Norwegian prices are usually a bit higher than US prices.

You can get a brand new 1250 GSA cheaper than this 1300 GS. During the release of the 1300 GS, they were having heart attack in Berlin as the negative comments were overwhelmingly more than the positives. This was admitted by their own spokesperson at the Dealer Event. Looks like Berlin wanted to double down and the new GSA will have the same front design. If I ever go back to the GS route again, I will get the 1250 GSA instead of the 1300 GS. This may be the best time to own the true Classic 1250 GSA as BMW announced a $1,250 rebate for the month of July and Aug.

I don't understand this overwhelming group-think like demand or call to arms for backlit switch gear in recent months. Few riders ride in the dark and you should learn your bike and where certain buttons are as it will become intuitive to a point where you don't need to look. My only beef with the 1300 is the headlight and the price. As a spoked wheel lover for this class of bike I am starting to come around on the forged enduro wheels, I am really starting to like the look. I'll likely be keeping my 1250 GSA until the facelift of the 1300 3-5 years down the road. Very much looking forward to the unveiling of the 1300 GSA later this week.

However, after some time, it seemed to adapt and work seamlessly. Perhaps it has some kind of adaptive logic that learns from how you ride.
