To those watching! Don't EVER use an impact to break loose the tension bolts. They are long and you could snap them in half. Loosen them 1st with wrench and THEN you can use impact afterwards only after they're free.

I have a friend who is putting a Honda V6 in a blown RX8. I asked if I could have the Renesis and he gave it to me. There were no broken seals but the rotors were full of gunk and carbon. The apex seals came out in pieces because they were so stuck. Rotor housings had chatter marks and worn chrome plating. The car apparently just sat for a while because the rotors left “stamps” on the irons. I was hoping the damage wasn’t too bad because I wanted to rebuild it... but the whole thing looks thrashed. I still have it torn apart in my garage as a kind of trophy, as I absolutely love rotaries. Good luck with the build!

Are you going to lighten the RX8 rotors, machine for rx7 seals? I heard that's the best way to rebuild a ren but I could be wrong.
@mincvinyl3 жыл бұрын
the rx7 apex seals are taller and heavier due to them being taller. Which means they can avoid catastrophic failure easier, but they will cause more wear on both the apex seal and housing. The reason mazda went to the shorter apex seal was due to the high rpm potential of the rx8. Spinning that fast will cause the apex seals to be pulled outwards away from the rotor. The more the seal weighs, the more force applied on the apex/housing surface, the more things wear. Now the shorter rx8 seals do cause more bending on the Rotor's apex seal groove. Which is the catastrophic failure that likely happened here. For both my engines, it appears rx8 rotors die around 120k miles......they might last longer if you were to do rx7 seals initially or just rebuild the rx8 seals sooner(60-70k miles) instead of trying to milk the engine. I'd rather replace the cost of seals every 60k miles than the entire engine every 120k miles. The rx8 rotors are not balanced from factory which will always be a plus in something made to go high rpm. Mazda just had similar weight classifications for the rotors when they were produced. Personally i'd buy a set from a reputable rotary shop balanced and machined for rx7 seals(note the corner seals also need to be machined/swapped)

@@mincvinyl Thanks for the full explanation. I don't own a rotary vehicle but I've been wanting one for some time now. I've driven my buddy's Rx8 with coilovers and upgraded sway bars probably the best handling car I've driven next to a 2017 corvette c7 grand sport.
@mincvinyl3 жыл бұрын
Yeah honestly handling and suspension is the one thing mazda really goes all out on. Since it is a small company I think they have an easier time on design and tuning than mass producing high hp cars. Mazda probably assumes people will modify their cars for hp if they wish for more. Ive talked to people that engineered Porsche race cars tell me the rx8 race car they worked on was on par for handling.

I own an rx8 as well and it is much more cost effective to exchange your core engine for a Mazda reman. Cost me 2950 to do it and I got new housings plates rotors etc. for the cost Mazda reman is the way.
@street_port_yyc3 жыл бұрын
side seal* not apex seal... you can tell because you're side seal is missing and it stayed a perfect line across the side of your rotor. it obviously snapped and skipped out of its groove, jumped up on the rotor and the next time the shaft end play was utilize it left that impression. if you've ever seen a broken apex seal failure in a rotary, you'd know your housings would look like a grenade went off in them, not a little scratch. either way time for a new engine. best thing you could do, get a reman from Mazda for cheap(they typically use new parts for most of the engine), crack it open and clearance and balance everything yourself, its actually quite easy if you have the specs. rx8 13b msp's are notorious for coming from Mazda totally out of spec. rotating assembly is extremely unbalanced, end shaft play out of spec and side seal clearance absolute trash. here's proof- kzbin.info/www/bejne/pme8d4SHbKucf80 Either way, a Renesis engine can throw down 400hp with the right modifications tuning. ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6bad5yHoalgmtU ) Currently sitting at 325hp/240ftlbs at low boost 9psi on 91pump gas. in a few months i'll be sitting at 400hp and around 300ftlbs on e85. Everyone says "apex seal *insert some excuse here*".. if properly maintained and built, they're powerhouses that are reliable.. unfortunately its usually 16 yr olds that treat them like a Honda civic..

Rotaries do fine turbo'd dunno what crack you're smokin. The Rx8's MSP Renesis 13b doesn't take to turbo/supercharging well due to the intake and exhaust designs. Limiting factors are the lack of any overlap, restrictive exhaust, Siamese center exhaust port and sleeve. Generally it is theorized that the renesis has a 450hp hard cap that is likely impossible to pass. Brettus on the rx8club forums is the highest hp while maintaining a crazy usable powerband and that build is around 420hp range right now I believe.
@Daniel-sq9xv3 жыл бұрын
@@mincvinyl so it is best if I put a turbo and change all the exhaust/intake system, or it’s better with a supercharger?
@mincvinyl3 жыл бұрын
@@Daniel-sq9xv Well since nobody really makes a supercharging kit, getting a turbo kit to achieve the same power will be cheaper. Now when you talk about turboing a renesis there is a multitude of issues to get around. I'd suggest reading a lot of threads on the Rx8 club forums before anything else.

Keeping the old housing or refurbishing it it’s a nonsense. You want a good engine? You need two of them. Plus that: all the gaskets, seals, bearings,... Do a nice review how is a healthy assembly because if you go ahead only with few changes you will see the waste of money and time. Kind regards.
