Memories of Grade 2 in Canada right now for me. Between Don’t You Know It’s Christmas from England, We Are the World from the US, and Tears Are Not Enough from Canada, this defined our 1984/1985 Grade 2 year. We were too young to understand what was happening in the world but we knew there was love and caring.

@@ColleenBeattie-wt9iuI feel you. That period was tumultuous for us Filipinos as well. The famine in some parts of Africa got eerily worse in 1984. Bob Geldof took action and trooped his Band-Aid artists to raise funds to send food aid. United they sang "Do They Know It's Christmas." Goosebumps began. The following year 1985, LRichie, MJackson & QJones gathered their fellow American music artists to produce "We Are The World" for the same purpose. Neighbor Canada had its Northern Lights singing "Tears Are Not Enough" and raising more than enough for Africa too. Goosebumps again but it Didn't end there. The Latino and Hispanic music artists also gathered together, called themselves HERMANOS (meaning, "siblings"), and released an album with the carrier song "Cantare, Cantaras" (I will sing, you will sing) in aid of UNiCEF funds for the African children. Can you imagine Julio Iglesias, the teen group Menudo, Irene Cara, Jose Feliciano, the Miami Sound Machine, Vicki Carr and more singing together?!? That's just as great as Northern Lights of Canada and the Ireland-UK's BandAid and United Support of Artists for Africa. The Goosebumps for me continued. Then the worst earthquake in Mexico happened in September 1985. I think some of the funds they raised went to Mexico. In February 1986, the name of my country The Philippines took the frontpage in all news outlets worldwide for peacefully toppling one of the worst dictators in world history. While UK, Canada, the US and the Spanish-speaking world gathered music artists to help a starving foreign continent, we here gathered all kinds of persons from all walks of life and from the varied economic strata to help ourselves and our oppressed nation -- to join hands in filling one significant street with a huge number of people as human shields against the tanks and the dictator's armed forces. The only things in mind were: Have You Had Enough? Are you now ready and brave enough to take a stand to the death?? Will you join us If you truly care for your country and for us to regain our collective freedom after 20 years of tyranny?? I was just in junior high when all of these happened. All those memories were highlighted and punctuated with beautiful songs sung by choruses of united hearts and voices. Now who can forget those years of strife and triumphs of the human spirit?!? I never will.

I can remember where I was when this came out. We didnt have a lot of media access as we do now in the 80s. So, when the Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in the United Kingdom, USA for Africa's "We Are the World" all came out. I was elated that Canada decided to help out an amazing cause. The star of this amazing ensemble of singers is Bryan Adams. He was everywhere.

OMG Chills ... Hearing the solo takes of the individual line work... the tries they made, the alternate attempts, and then THEE ONE ... MAGICAL !! I know we're biased after all these years knowing the final mix, but man there WAS INDEED a special something about the takes that were considered final. You can see Foster light up, and usually the artist obviously feels the fit too. On another note - that poor 2-inch tape really got a workout !! Start stop start stop start stop haha Probably 1000 times. I wonder if it is still in a vault somewhere

I’ve read according to sources that Gordon Lightfoot drove himself to the studio for this project in a pickup truck; however, according to his biographer Nicholas Jennings that is of urban legend, and that he actually pulled up in his cream-coloured Oldsmobile Toronado. Seeing this documentary I don’t think either ring true. I remembered seeing this, and I thought wait a minute. These are both misconceptions. I believe that he didn’t drive to the studio at all, and that someone gave him a lift to the studio in a red sedan. You can see him getting out of the passenger’s seat, through the passenger door to greet a fan in the opening credits, when his name appears on the screen.

Absolutely fascinating to see these deals that led to the artists performing on the song actually happen and be filmed. Very showbiz-y, but also weirdly genial. Plays out like a parody of itself, almost. EDIT: ...fuck, I kinda like Bryan Adams now. The "If we take - eh? - a stand - eh?" thing made me snort when I realized what he was doing.

I come back. I keep on coming back to watch this video. It's nostalgic. It also reminds me of old I am, sigh... The song is brilliantly crafted from the musicianship to the artists lending their voices to the lyrics. My only wish is that I hoped to have seen more footage of those awesome singers. Man, when that song/video came out I remembered feeling very proud to be Canadian. Times seem to be getting tougher for most these days in this complicated world the we all live in. This video reminds me that there was a time ago when things were a little less hectic. Like the sign on the door says, "Please check your egos at the door ". It would be cool if we could do the same. This is why I come back. Oh ya...throw in some compassion as well.

@@slovik80 This something to think of - getting all those people there on the same day at short notice was quite a feat. Not to take anything away from 'We are the World' but a lot of those stars probably lived in LA, whereas even some of the Canadians living in Canada had to make a bit of a trek to get there. It's amazing only one just couldn't make it.

if you watch the American take, you'll find how WAY more humble they are, how way less trying the documentary was, how they never talk about "the best", how they are so much more collected with themselves and each other, and way less full of themselves. Then, if you watch the original .. the British take, they are as pure as it gets, as there is not even an ounce of anyone being anyone other than themselves, and the results reflect that, the result are the most pure. Canada should take note, then again, that era is past, and it was great, but now, there's nothing but ego, and trash .. if anything at all.
