Graduate were an English new wave and mod group formed in 1978, in Bath, England. They were only very mildly successful, and broke up by 1981. They are today best known as being the initial recording vehicle for future Tears for Fears members Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith

*I know that AllMusic lists Graduate as a new wave band but going by this song they're more like power pop band.* Like J. Geils Band, Big Star, The Knack, and Cheap Trick. Tears for Fears is definitely new wave. I wonder if they realized power pop was only getting them onto kiddie shows and decided to get on the new wave scene.

Although the band was created in 1978, this video is actually from 1980, in a TV performance, with this song "Ever Met a Day" on the children's program Runaround for Southern TV, in Southampton. It was in this year that they released their first and only album, “Acting My Age”. In 1981, Orzabal and Smith left Graduate and formed a band called History of Headaches, which they soon changed to Tears for Fears.

Didn't know they went back to late 70s! Just shows you, all the Great 80s bands like Simple Minds, Depeche Mode, Thompson Twins, Tears For Fears, so many! They didn't just appear overnight, they put the years of work in, gigs, writing, creative focus....they forced their way into the popular culture of the 80s, and made it great for all of us!👏

Bloody hell. I used to watch Runaround after getting home from school. Loved that show. I grew up in the Bath area and of course knew about Tears for Fears but I didn't know about Graduate. Very interesting bit of music history!

This is a fantastic trip back in time, the broadcast quality is amazing. The way Roland and Curt are playing and dancing is aggressive and punk in attitude. It’s a million miles away from the cool stage persona they had when they hit the big time with their mid 80s ballads and stadium anthems.

This is really out of left field. A penpal of mine introduced me to Graduate, then I saw TFF live in the mid 80s being all cool and polished following the release of Big Chair, and one afternoon I walked past a hotel and saw Curt and Roland getting into their car, there was Head Over Heels in the Donnie Darko movie and Seeds of Love playing in a store everyday where I worked , one of my major fave musicians Steven Wilson has worked with them and I watched a live BBC concert a little while back when on hols and my flatmate has most of their stuff now. They've been following me around for decades! And fine cos they're not a bad band at all! My fave song is Sea Song. Btw, big shout out to all my old penpals from back in the day....we used to write a heck of a load of letters about TFF, there was a massive worldwide TFF network then in the 80s before the time of Social Media. We found a way. Happy days! 😻

I don't remember ever hearing Roland hurt his voice box, so forgive me but I must ask? What is your source on that bit of information? I think they pretty much both sang throughout their time together, and of course have recently reunited.

In 1978, the world was not ready for what this band would become. They were hip enough to popular tastes at this point to know that they could connect with the audience better by playing guitars instead of synths, but their way with a song was already in full bloom. To be honest, it was the 90s before I was willing to admit how good they are. I love this rare early video. Thank you for posting.

This is great to see them in there very first tee vee appearance. Im 47 and as a kid in the 80s i use to hear the Big Chair record. Still have it, its not in the best of shape cause i place it alot. 😊

I was around 7 years old in 1978 and I idolized them by the time I was 14 or 15 when their their album Songs From the Big Chair came out. I didn't know they were already around in the late 70's.
