When Shout was released - it was profound. Nothing else like it back then. It was played mainly on alternative & college radio stations, "discovered" late by the mainstream. Most of my peers back then were listening to heavy metal, glam rock, Top 40 and disco (yikes). For me - it was TFF, Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, U2, The Smiths, OMD, The Cure, The Stranglers - just a few of the bands that kept us going - musically and emotionally. Still does.

These guys don't have a so-so album. They evolved over time but always remained creative and interesting. Their later album "Raoul And The Kings Of Spain" is a work of art. The melodies, the instrumentation, the production are all gorgeous. Every song is a gem.

The story behind this song is great. In the 80’s the world, especially England where Tears for Fears was starting out, was afraid Ronald Reagan was going to start a nuclear war. The singer Roland O. was humming the main verse in his head in the shower. He took this to Kurt Smith, but they did not want to finish it out,but were talked into it….luckily.

Roland Orzabal is a very underrated guitar player. Here's a deep cut for you. It's 'The Working Hour' from the 'Big Chair' album and they say it's their most-requested fan favorite when they tour. This particular live performance is from 2014. It's the song that first got me interested in exploring their music beyond the hits. They still tour today, and have a new album complete (no release date announced yet): kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWbCeY2KbNabhpI

Great review! From the song's wiki page - It features footage of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith at Durdle Door in Dorset, England, as well as at a studio performance with the full band (including Ian Stanley and Manny Elias) performing the song amidst a crowd of family and friends. The video reportedly cost only £14,000 to produce.

It was like Tears for Fears sprung up out of nowhere one day and then it was like they should have been there all the time. Instantly likeable and you could listen to them over and over and not get tired of hearing their songs. Their sound was unique and distinctively them.

Great review y'all. Tears for Fears are one of my very favorite bands, they are incredible. Their production and engineering rivals Steely Dan, and that's the ultimate compliment. A must hear cut is the stunning Woman in Chains. It's spectacular. Their album Elemental has the great title cut, Elemental, as well as Break it Down Again, Mr. Pessimist, and my favorite, Goodnight Song. Raoul and the Kings of Spain album, as noted below, is breathtaking. The title cut is a must hear as well as Secrets and God's Mistake. And of course, Sowing the Seeds of Love is their tribute to The Beatles and is as much of a must-see video as a must hear delight. More please!

I agree, the Songs From The Big Chair era would be the higher heights of TFF. Shout was a unique and different sounding song when it was released, mainly with the synth sound. Roland Orzabal's guitar playing in the song, especially his solo is absolutely one of the most anthemic and awesome solo's ever. The bass line during the bridge as well so distinct and yet simple. Another fantastic song from this album is Head Over Heels. Other songs to check out would be from their debut album, The Hurting: Change, Pale Shelter and Mad World.

As for a Tears for Fears "deep cut" perhaps you can do "Brian Wilson Said" off the album Elemental. Curt Smith was not on this album; it was just Roland and his back up band then (with production and songwriting collaboration by Alan Griffith). The album is under-rated, but it has some sublime songs. "Brian Wilson Said" is glorious, glorious!!!! Roland's best guitar work. Beautiful song.

You might know Tears for Fears' song "Mad World" from their first album "The Hurting." It is hauntingly beautiful. ... If you like Tears for Fears, you might also like the Scottish band Simple Minds from the 1980s, who had a No. 1 hit with "Don't You Forget About Me" (from the teen comedy-drama film "The Breakfast Club") and a No. 3 hit "Alive and Kicking," also shot at a cool outdoors location, with a cliff and waterfall. ... I was in high school and college back then and couldn't get enough of the Second British Invasion new wave and synth rock bands of the 1980s! :-)
