“Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.” ~ J.R.R. Tolkien "Return of the King" The best lines from the film are drawn almost verbatim from the book. Tolkein's prose is just wonderful.
@highlandersteve99533 жыл бұрын
"in Middle-earth" really adds a lot. I like to think it means that Gandalf would like to be friends with them again in another life.
@southernlady5085 Жыл бұрын
Definitely. Tolkien here is referencing the Catholic belief that the fellowship of the saints in the Church militant (earthly) will continue in the Church Triumphant (heavenly). The “Communion of Saints” will go on for eternity. There is not the huge divide between the two that some erroneously believe. Even now, we have a foretaste of that glory as we join together in our prayers and gather with the Church around the altar of God in worship. Tolkien, in these simple yet beautiful words, reminds us that we will be reunited more wholly as one entity and will experience sublime joy in one another’s presence and in the love of God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

This scene doesn’t do it for me. It’s the King Aragorn quote - “My friends please. You bow to no one!” That gets me every time. I can’t even text it without shedding a tear.

He's talking about when Frodo rejected Sam and Sam was crying from the hurt that he felt. What the tears taught Sam was how lost Frodo was, that he would refuse Sam but accept Smeagol. Had Sam not cried in that moment, the hurt would have turned to anger and anger would have blinded him. The tears opened him to understanding which allowed him to think rationally.

Like if you think this just elevates his performance even more. Majority of the work was done not being able to work off of anyone. But nailed the mood, tempo and atmosphere of every shot he was in. Imagine “dear hobbits, I will not say do not weep. For all tears are not evil”. (Or insert any scene here). But you’re alone. Masterclass!

Tears are not always good though. Don't mistake the quote for saying that crying is always the right thing to do. Never cry out of fear. That will blind you. Fear should heighten your senses; make you think more quickly. Crying in a panic will get you nowhere. That is just one example. There are many others. Never cry out of jealousy or a perceived injustice. That is weakness. Cry out of compassion. It is important to see things very distinct difference.
@VeryPeeved7 жыл бұрын
as all things, tears are neither inherently good or evil. it's all in how they are used.
