Lundi is super excited and Phabeni is taking right to her. She is far more emotional over Phabeni than she was with Khanyisa! I think Lundi is experiencing nostalgia, seeing Mambo through little Phabeni. Khanyisa is the HERD’s resident social butterfly who didn’t seem to be as dependent as him, which Lundi’s instincts picks up on. Khanyisa also doesn’t sleep in Lundi’s section to prevent situations with Mambo so I’m curious to see if that’ll be the case with Phabeni and how Mambo reacts to this tiny bull

Was that Phabeni making most of those sounds getting frustrated that Lundi wouldn't stand still? Really loud when Lundi stepped on him! Glad they figured out that it was Lammie upsetting Lundi. It is so wonderful to see Lundi protecting little Phabeni and allowing him to suckle. It was very interesting to watch Lundi's reaction to Lammie & Spotty whilst they were close to Phabeni. Jabulani is so caring, and he is a gentle giant with the orphans 💙❤️🐘🐑

I also have tears in my eyes. So much is coming full circle here. Phabeni is joining life as a full elephant with a mother and a herd enabled by the loving humans around him. The carers celebrate a life that could have been cut tragically short, but is instead joining life with love. Lundi, also an orphan, becomes a mother once again and can nurture yet another young one to adulthood with her herd. This is a blessed moment.

This integration is actually going very smooth and fast compared to Khanyisa. Phabeni needed to heal from wounds, trauma and weight loss from no mother's milk. The orphans need to get use to and trust their human caregivers before any attempt at integration

Wonderful!!!! Very touching!! It does make you wonder if adoptions ever happen in wild herds, although the chances of an orphan finding an accepting lactating cow must be one in a million. Like so very much of the natural world, amazing!!

I agree, you would have to have a mother with enough milk for two and or a mother who lost her calf and there was an orphan at exactly that time. I imagine it has to have happened. I watch the bears at Brooks Falls and they saw the first recorded adoption of a bear yearling a few years ago, so it must have happened with ellies at some point too. Obviously, with no pressure for food, as exists with HERD, they are more than willing to incorporate orphans.

Phabeni really like Jabu!! What a good role model for him. Its beautiful how excepting this herd is to the orphans. I like to believe they remember their own journey to HERD. So they are more apt to accept orphans and make the their own. I think of time when Tokwe and Lundi tried to steal the baby of a wild Albino mother. Its crazy maybe the mother was sickly that day and the HERD lady leaders decided they'd be better at mothering the calf. They said, "We do this all the time, all our babies we take in do perfectly fine, just let us have the baby." lol these confident allomothers. So sweet how mothering kicks and Lundi protects Phabeni from even the sunshine. Elephants are incredible mothers so intelligent.

Jabu is so patient and calm and protective. He reacted to Phabeni when he yelped and watching Jabu go over to comfort him was.. I can’t find the perfect words.. beautiful, amazing, adorable just don’t seem to be good enough. Lundi is amazing and I’m sure she will protect that baby with her life. It’s heartwarming to watch the love. ❤️
