In my humble, non business opinion, they look the same because minimalism is...well minimal. You can't be super creative with a style meant to be formal and uniform. But hey that's just me, I hope things get resolved between them

I'm a graphic designer and yes, the logos are extremely similar but they're both based around really popular trends. I could find hundreds of logos that look similar to both of theirs. Especially since they are both minimalistic wordmarks (type-based logos). I don't believe that it was intentionally copied, but I do agree it would benefit Laura to change the brand's logo to differentiate themselves more not only from Minimaa but also from the many other businesses that may have a similar logo.
@alyxzwi

I was going to comment the same thing. When I saw the logos my first thought was, okay, it's "minim-" in a capital serif font, which is a very literal wordmark that any designer could come up with in 5 minutes of brainstorming. Also, the logos play with reflection/scale/alignment differently so those are some other principals people should consider.

I'm a graphic designer and I think this just means both brands worked with graphic designers that were mediocre at best, where was the market research to make sure the logo was completely different from anything else in the market?, since both of these brands sell clothes/apparel. No prior research gives mediocre results when it comes to graphic design and that's a shame.

I'm a lawyer and I find these trademark dispute matters frustrating. Unfortunately if you want to protect your brand and logo you are required to trademark it - simple as that. I understand small businesses starting out may not have the funds to cover the expense of registering trademarks but it unfortunately is something you have to prioritise if you want to protect your brand.

As a graphic designer, I really don't think Laura copied this brand in particular. Font logos are the, for the most part, the most popular and trendy type of logos out there. I don't really think Laura would have done the logo herself, but perhaps she hired a graphic designer that looked up a ton of references. In Jaclyn's case, it was pretty much not a copy by itself, but a case of who trademarked it first. And the fact that she was shady about the whole situation.

okay but having studied branding and trademark law for years all I can say that is better to protect your business once it takes off and invest in the proper register of brand names and logos. It avoids and protects you from these situations. Let me be clear, it's really easy to know if a word is under a trademark (for a brand) or not, there are online databases that helps to find this out, but if you haven't registered you take the risk of these situations, since there's no proof beside your tik-tok and social media that this specific name belongs to you under the certain specifications that your business offers. I know this sucks but a trademark can last up to 10 years and it only costs around 1000 dollars but you got 10 years for your brand to be secured.

Designer here. That's why we always suggest going for different and unique to stand out to avoid these things. But this does happen a lot even if we search [unless you are a bad designer who doesn't then shame on you] but we make sure there isn't any look-a-like but it's also kind of impossible because there are just too many businesses, especially in this entrepreneur era. Also as much as we advise to go for unique, at the end of the day we must cater to the client. So many of us designers follow "The 20 Percent Rule" so our client does not get into trouble. So remember if you come across someone and they have a similar logo with a few settle changes then I am truly sorry. We as artists really hope one day art will have set strict laws that help protect people. Especially since we are entering a digital age.

I am also wondering is trademarking only a legality in US? I feel that if there are foreign brands how can one track that down? The database for LLCs and brands has got to be GIANT to sort thru in US. Let's face it, most celebs contain themselves to SCorps and LLCs for taxes/IRS for US folks.
@vendan4175

@@katiew2104 a trademark is valid for the market which it is registered, so for example Apple has TM registrations in the US register, UK register and EU register etc. So if the small business owner have a AUS TM but not a US one, the mark is only protected in AUS. So basically you would have to check the countries ,where you want to use your brand, register.

To anyone thinking of starting a brand, factor in the cost of an international trademark fee as part of your start up capital. It's an investment that could quite literally save your business in situations like this. Cause even the minimum of a home country trademark isn't enough now given the global nature of business platforms like TikTok/Insta/KZbin. To be honest when I saw the logos side by side, I thought Laura's was "Minimal" with the "L" above the "A" meant to be a play on Los Angeles, as in "Minimal Los Angeles" since her beauty brand is "Laura Lee Los Angeles". And the Minima brand logo as "Minima A" with the the A for Australia. Los Minima(ngeles)

Girl had me but then said “this influencer has gotten cancelled multiple times so I don’t even know how she keeps popping back up” homegirl sounds very salty and bitter, I get it but come on, the situation with KOZE, the owner was upset but handled it in a classy way, this chick is just shading Laura

Minimalist is a trend nowadays. And when you’re trying to be minimalistic and on brand (literally) theres not much room for creativity. And the minimaa brand owner just sounded kinda mean Idk. Also both a similar but they’re completely different names so it shouldn’t be much of a problem. I feel like people kinda just wanna stir up drama for clout

The “right thing”? They aren’t the same logo. The woman who owns MINIMAA could not go after her or flag her for literally anything because they are not the same. They’re both as basic as it gets. Woo.

The irony of this situation.. they both made a minimalistic logo and brand and derived their brand name from it.. and then thought it was original

Doesn't make any sense that she would steal someone else's logo/brand name as she's being forced to rebrand because of that exact reason. I'm not a fan of hers but I doubt that she would be THAT dumb.

i mean theyre close enough but not completely the same...plus that style has been trendy for a while. im not a laura lee stan but given she changed it last time im sure if she had just reached out and told laura they couldve handled this privately and laura wouldve changed her logo if she was in the wrong. this just screams hey everyone supported this small business owner why wouldnt they support me? she probably also is shutting down comments and looking into the situation, investigations like this move slow so yeah shes probably not going to comment on it ubtil she has all the facts

I recognize both fonts if they are both popular minimalistic low cost fonts. This is a textbook example why marketers advise to invest in having your branding professionally done. Yes, it will cost you up to $2000 but it’s worth for serious small business owners who are in a saturated market.

I can't believe this, but Laura is not in the wrong here. I just bough a dress with the exact same logo last week (same font, same way to put the brand name) it's basic, and the AMOUTN of brands that have minimal in their names,

What rubs me wrong about influencers that deal with copyright issues and intellectual properties is how unserious they take these issues. They dont care. It feels the only reason they care is when it breaks any copyright law. It gives me so much ick.

One of them is Australian based brand and another is USA based from the quick google search I just did. As far as I know trademarks aren't a global thing, so if Laura Lee checked only for the USA it's probably why the minimaa brand didn't come up. And from the website minimaa seems to be focused on swimwear while minimLA seems to be focused more on clothing, accessories and body care items. And the price points for both brands are different. In my opinion minimaa is on the higher end pricing wise and I find minimLA to be on the more ZARA level pricewise. ie. a minimaa dress is 250 AUS dollars, which is about 157 USD, while the most expensive minimLA dress is 65 USD (or 103 AUS). Minimaa claims to be sustainable, while minimLA makes no such claim (as far as I could find) And as a last note (for me) I could find minimaa with just one google search while for mimimLA I had to search 'minim Laura Lee". I personally don't think she copied it. It's just not that much you can do with the name using 'minimal' and keeping your designs in that style (personally, I do like the minimaa brand logo better). I don't think there would be much confusion like with the koze situation.

Just here to ask that people please hire a designer or design company whenever possible instead of trying to make their own logo. A business can look into similar logos and styles that are out there and make sure that your personal logo stands on its own and separate from others.

So I'm pretty sure she actually can't do anything unless she trademarks her company in the U.S. and she only has it trademarked in Australia. Laura Lee is well within her legal rights to use that logo and name. I highly highly doubt she wants to rebrand again, especially if she does not have to under U.S. law.

I see a bunch of other graphic designers posting about the logo design so I don’t feel the need to comment on that, but I can’t believe that the Noodie Patootie brand did all that work before getting their trademark and making sure they were good to go legally? In my work, the naming and legal stuff gets totally cleared before we even start design. I don’t follow Laura Lee but even if she’s saying they’re a “small business”, it seems like she has enough connections that she should have known that.

Can you please talk about the Alo Yoga vs Alori Makeup case. It’s in court right now and Alo Yoga is basically bullying Alori Makeup over the similar names when Alori was first and trademarked and is Latina and Black owned company. I believe that’s what the case is about but it’s ongoing right now.

I think the name comes from the first eyeshadow pallet her makeup line ever launched, it was called nudie patootie. It was actually a really good pallet, neutral colors but excellent quality. I didn't even know she had started a clothing brand or that she had named that brand the same name at one point.

minima and minim are clearly similar, but they are not the same. laura lee obviously did not steal the design lmfao it's just a minimal design, which is super popular atm, with a serif font, which is also super popular rn. this is obviously someone being overly offended that someone else in the world had similar ideas to them and no longer being "unique" on the marketplace imo

Imo I’m tired of these small brands crying to social media because they didn’t take the time to trademark their company name and brand. As a business major, that’s just business. It’s important to trademark and this is on you ngl. Especially if ur gonna invest so much money into ur business you can invest in a trademark too.
