A UK regulator won't be able to challenge some of the biggest companies in the world. Ofcom can either take them to court and lose millions, or turn them off and lose credibility. That's it.

Who wants to bet that they don't go after people for convincing children to chop their body parts off and take puberty blockers? Or OF "creators" for being scammers and predators?

I don't think this will be any good for freedom of speech

We do not have freedom of speech, we have freedom of expression, but that comes with caveats.

What this probably means in practice is we get stripped down, inferior versions of the apps that put blanket bans on certain content regardless of legality, so they don't have to manually moderate it. Maybe I am underestimating our pull for these companies, but I don't see why they'd make huge changes to their business model just to accommodate us.

wouldn't surprise me if they end up enforcing id checks for social media. Australia has already done it so it's not exactly far fetched.

'Harassment'...... I can't see the government stretching that word to its absolute limit.

I’m glad they’re doing ahead checks but I do think that the uk should be working with the us to hold them to account

I am surprised still they are not going after Microsoft’s so called security feature run on computers kids use where is the Coppa protection there as most of that data is storied on online Microsoft servers for Win 11 and using always online and copilot Ai that could be manipulated and put kids at risk after the Crowd wave blue screen security bug event I do not even trust Microsoft with that data anymore, also hope this does not turn in to a mess that let’s really bad or improperly thought through policy’s in to law as can ofcom really manage having to keep a eye on most companies when most are from far off distant countries with more flexible rules on this kind of thing like America and France to maintain free speech.
