‘07 Base Cayman- Bought it at European Collectibles (Costa Mesa) in 2020 for $12,900 with 124k miles. A doctor traded it in for a 356. Before I purchased the 1 owner Cayman it received a major service which included coils & plugs. Still drives like a dream at 134k miles with absolutely no issues.

At 5:14 Nathan says that "If (Porsche) had introduced that car first, we might very well never have had a Carrera, not have a 911..." Of course context is everything, so we can overlook the 550 and 715 Spyders. But if you go back far enough in time to Porsche #1, it was a mid-engined car. Porsche still chose to move to focus on the rear engined 356's because they are more efficient when it comes to storage space.

Great Video you guys! PCGB member here in UK! Fell foul to the old tyres on my 987C 2006 when bought I 3 yrs ago, needed full set of new Mich PS and new rubber, made huge difference! also Stock brakes on 2.7 was not good with non Porsche parts. Fitted new quality OEM discs and Brembo sport 2000 pads and huge difference to bite on Track and street. also easy to fit OE GT3 plastics brake ducts on front for cheap aid to cooling on track days. air con on mine just died so very expensive for new rads and such.. and a big expense especially as a 3rd car! But love the Base cayman and sweet engine sound. Want to open up my engine bay now and clean it lol 😆 Thanks for info.

Wow, I wish I had seen this before I bought mine. Great info still! I had heard about the IMS issue but it did not deter me from getting the S. I’m learning bit by bit what to look for and how to properly drive it, and it is different from my other cars. First thing was to take it to my mechanic for a thorough look over, found a couple of small things but nothing big. It’s only got 44k on it but it’s become my new daily. @filterman0623

@@matiashojas41 I got a new panel cover to cover the new radio that matched the Porsche volcanic grey interior paint, so that looks seamless. The USB port to connect my phone was installed in the storage space under the heater/AC control panel and the microphone installed above the rear view mirror. All of that is pretty seamless. The only thing not seamless was the subwoofer. Even the thinnest one (Kicker) was too thick to mount under the seat (as they are intended) so as not to be visible. Instead, I mounted it vertically in the passenger foot well. While visible, it takes up little space there, and was very worth it for improvement in sound quality! The rear speakers were a kit I purchased from Suncoast that was purpose-designed to fit in the rear panel behind the headrests, so that was seamless.

I bought a 2007 cayman S with 90,000 miles for $24,000 in Dec of 2019. A bit high but it has quality coilovers, deepsump baffled oil pan, air oil separator and a $4,000. wheel tire combo. All records, clean history, absolutely mint inside and out. headliner perfect. no bore scoring, or smoke on start up. I added gt3 lower control arms and changed the oil to motul, 9.5 quarts total. I just couldn't be happier. I'm thinking of changing shift cables and clutch along with all the bushings etc. belts and all new fluids along wthl any and all 100,000 mile recommended service. I own a old 98 986 2.5 Boxster for 10 years now. Done 212k kms and can only add; best value money can ever buy. You guys are paranoid about IMS issues, so much so that I went to my Porsche dealership 3 years ago and asked them about it. They commented that they never ever had anything to fix like that at all. ZERO! (Similar comment from all my Porsche Club members). So I think it was just an aftermarket company that tried to artificially staged a problem in order to create a spin-off business out of spares or services. Apart from servicing my car self every 20000km's the only major issues I had was to replace engine and gearbox mountings, shocks reconditioned starter, cleaned the throttle body, fixed a snapped door cable. All by myself thanks to YT articles. I'm doing the odd track events annually with the P Club. Awesome fun to drive it flat out every now and then. Amazing. "Prost" to German Engineering at its best.

I just test drove an 08 base Cayman. Great car, but hand on heart honest to God, my 2011 Miata is more fun to drive. At least on the kinds of roads I was able to take the Cayman on. The Porsche has a lot more power and grip and yadda yadda, but the shifter is straight out of an economy car and the gearing is long. It's quite a big serious thing compared to the zippy-zappy whimsy of the Mazda. That said, the look and sound of the Cayman were so beautiful I was literally brought to tears. I've been looking at these cars in pictures since they came out, and in person it was even more gorgeous. The one I drove had a lightened flywheel, which was the bomb, and a muffler delete, which was fun but very obnoxious. I think I need one, but it can't replace the Miata. I must get a place with more space.

Hol' up - an extravagance? A mere toy? Granted, this isn't gonna be as practical as a wagon or SUV, but I am here to tell you the Cayman is a perfectly usable daily hatchback if you don't have kids. There are times I need to rent a truck for lumber or whatnot, but for 99% of the time? These are actually pretty darn practical. The hatch is perfectly sized for a couple bags of mulch or gravel - more if you want to use the engine cover as a load floor, plus more in the frunk caveat bag size.

Really, it runs way better then it ever did new... a bit more power but the big difference is how smooth it runs and how freely it revs. Even after I've had the new engine now going on about five years... I still notice how nicely it runs. I hated... I mean HATED spending the money. Porsche really pissed me off... I love the cars, but hate the company. I guess its sort of like being in love with an abusive spouse. I think if you had the do just the "IMS Solution" it would probably cost you $2000.

The cayman is very very tight on my big fat old body. How much bigger is a 996 /911 ?
@PorscheClubofAmerica
@PorscheClubofAmerica 3 жыл бұрын
From the driver seat, they're similarly sized, But the 911 will feel a bit less "claustrophobic," for lack of a better term, due to having more space behind the driver seat and what (we think) is a bigger overall greenhouse.

@@PorscheClubofAmerica i drove a 2009 cayman ...and loved it. But my left arm was pressed tight to the door.. and my right knee was tight into the dash. I could drive the car but it was not comfortable. Head room and leg room was not a problem. Mostly interior width. And back of seat to the dash. I assume the 996 / 911 would be better for me ,,, however despite being a PCA member with covid I cant get near a club members car.. to get a feel for the size. So the last 2 years have been nothing but frustrating wanting to see what fits me so I can buy a car.. and this has cost me over 6 grand as the 996 has gone up that much money while I am trying to get a feel on a car size. Thats a very expensive delay. Not super happy about that.

Wow after you state how you are a porsche geek and know all the special packages and all but you dont know about the name of the Cayman S Sport. The orange and green option. the first Cayman to come stock with over 300 Bhp at 303. 19" rims alcantara steering wheel, sport exhaust, pasm, chrono. Came out late 2008. It really is wierd that it is so unknown and it is one of the best Caymans of that period.

Why would I not want a 2009 cayman with the 9A1 engine instead. ?

Both 987.1 and 987.2 are great cars, but 987.2 tends to be a good amount more expensive, which is the barrier for most people to that car. Get the best one you can afford.

@@PorscheClubofAmerica by the time I might have to split a case and remove an engine to replace an IMS the price for a 2009 or 2010 987 with the 9A1 engine seems a far better deal to me.

IMS issues are very very rare with the 987.1 It’s more or less Bore scoring and the oiling system that should be addressed. Both can be easily remedied for under 3 grand with an upgraded deep sump oil pan, AOS and a few other things. Grab the best car you can that appeals to you. I agree finding a car that allows you to sleep better at night knowing it’s reliable. There are many ways to make any Porsche very reliable if you know what parts to upgrade. Most of these things are blown way out of proportion by the internet. If you are concerned with the 987.1 or .2 then go for the 981 or 718. My 987.1 has been very strong and super reliable, although I never track it. Next year it will be replaced by a 997.2 or 991. Until then it will be admired and enjoyed. Go with what inspires the most confidence.

I never understood the fussiness about Porsche rated tyres (N0/N1...) - albeit I do appreciate expensive Michelin / Pirelli rubber for some of my cars that I only want to keep roadworthy by just driving them below national speed limits (call it maintenance driving rather than having the car on hold in storage) there is no point in burning your bucks: asian inexpensive rubber will do this job better than any. If anyone is not happy of buying a car such equipped they can swap it and do whatever they like but taking value away from any of my cars such equipped they will have no chance. The same sensible rule applies to winter tyres: for the ones living in climates warranting them they are priceless: a no brainer buy. I still remember the day that on a 981 S I was able to overtake on snow covered tarmac all SUVs / 4x4s running on useless summer rubber - if there is no traction the number of driven wheels matters not a yota, this is to conclude: I value rubber but try the best I can to be sensible with the money I spend on it.

S models highly suffer from bore scoring, which is by far the number one killer of these engines. 2.7L base have almost no issues with bore scoring. I expect S models to rise in price b/c many will be junked and not rebuilt.

As the second owner of an 07 Cayman S, purchased in 2016 I found your video very interesting. However, I found it somewhat troubling, concerning, strange, please insert your adjective, that the Cayman used to showcase this segment wasn't even lightly detailed , let alone even washed!?! Granted every one treats & maintains their Porsche differently & admittedly I'm on the far side of the anal spectrum when it comes to my Cayman's appearance, but using the featured Cayman as an example, there's no way I would ever consider purchasing a car, let alone a Porsche that looked this unclean & potentially unloved by it's current owner.

Thanks for chiming in Michael. We left it unwashed to show folks that just because a car might not be clean doesn't mean it isn't a good candidate. One needs to look deeper to see if a car qualifies as "good". That said, this car is normally washed and well kept.
