That's a great little story about the late, great John Dunlavy. He also did a lot for the Australian high end audio community in the years he was here.

I bought a pair of Mission MX1 speakers new about 9 years ago and they cost an eye watering amount for a pair of bookshelf speakers. I've never liked the way they sound, they weren't particularly sensitive, the midrange was very recessed, the bass booming and the high end was just too harsh. I haven't used these speakers for about 8 years after I upgraded to an old pair of B&Ws so I decided there was nothing to be lost by opening one up to look at the crossover. For a start, the tweeter is 4 ohm and the woofer is 8 ohm which is really odd so they've used some cheap resistors in series with the tweeter. It also uses some really nasty caps and inductors. I did away with all of that and stuck a single high quality cap in for the tweeter and a resistor for impedance matching and now they sound a million times better, I can't wait to see how good I can get them!

Really curious what you think of the Legacy HD monitors. I personally like them, but wanted to know what you think of the AMT folded ribbon.

Another great video Danny. The explanations were perfect. Too bad Ron put the 1st x-over picture up for 1.5 sec. :-) Thumbs up you two.

Id like to upgrade the crossovers in my JBL 4312G's

hu, you explain how you will upgrade all these parts, but you dont explain the difference between the old and new parts. such as, how exactly will this new capacitor or coil of magnet wire improve the system in comparison to the old parts? and how exactly do they operate

The large majority of people wouldn't understand, and don't care. How much time should he spend teaching you for free? He is willing to evaluate and recommend improvements. I'm thrilled he is willing to do that.

@@jimbendtsen8841 does something become right just because everyone does it or is that actually really stupid?

Hey, Love your video series. I have a "why not" project I want to do. I can't seem to find a really good a 15" woofer. (Project is a pair of Pioneer CS-G403 and will be reinforcing the cabinet. ) Do you have a suggestion? I would prefer to plug the port and go sealed, so any driver you can suggest for that application would be awesome. must be 8 ohms and plays up to at least 500hz-600hz to mate with the Dayton Audio RS52FN-8 dome midrange.

I have a pair of B&W CDM1 Signature speakers, do you think it would be worthwhile to send you one for evaluation?

Is there a price range for a speaker to justify the upgrade cost ? Or would you say its personal preference? Seeing your videos im interested in the concept of upgrading. Wish your company had more locations.

Wish there was enough measurement beside just freq response to say why like a particular speaker design. Have an old pair of acoustic energy AE3, rare big brother to better know AE1's, that love sound of but blew bass driver. Tried numerous replacements with no luck. More recently resorted to active xover bottom since know the crossover frequencies but would like to return it to completely passive design, thus need to design crossover for woofer section which should be manageable. Latest drivers tried (as let be as is for 10+ years) are some buyout scan speaks that seem to have the potential (sensitivity and suited for the smaller vented cab relative to most 8 inch drivers). Also have some 2 ways that built into 3 way, since already set up for active split to front, though think the baffle step comp in the kit's 2 way design impacting performance in a 3 way application. Oh the first world problems heh.

The Odyssey Kismets use top of the line ScanSpeak drivers and the highest quality crossover parts, they better sound great. The tweeters cost $1100 a pair!

Should I just throw away my old speakers from the 70's. They were the standard 12 inch woofer, 4.5 inch mid range, and 3 inch tweeter. The cabinets are 28 x 16 x 12.
