@@mr.electronx9036 Eh... The situation is actually pretty comparable. The PS3 has 256mb RAM and the GPU has dedicated 256mb RAM. The Xbox 360 has 512mb RAM but only 10mb of eDRAM. Consequently, the Xbox has to share RAM with the GPU. Xbox is closer to internal GPU laptops, but the PS3's weird configuration is why multiplatform games often performed worse on PS3.

A part 2 would be really neat. Still though, hitting 80-90+ degrees on average will definitally hurt the lifespan of your components. If there is a part 2, if you somehow magically find a way to clean up the IO and make the temps more managable then that would be cool. Still, due to the space constrants I don't think it will be possible to get good power, noise, and heat distrobution. Maybe, it could be possible to get 2 out of the 3, but not all 3.

Drilling more holes in the outer case on the top is about the only effective option he has with the exception of somehow adding some external fans to improve cross flow but with the lack of space the system is creating convection (like heat swirls around in an oven) and it will eventually cook the CPU and will experience major thermal throttling in the GPU as well. While very cool this is just impractical due to the nature of PC components. This is why most PC cases are much larger that the parts you put in them!

So probably the low profile RX 6400 XT Maybe, just maybe, I can keep the components just within the NUC's included power adapter's wattage limit considering most of those things processors only consume 9 to 15 watts

Very nice build! I would try to fiddle a bit more with the CPU and GPU undervolting and maybe try toswitch the small fans from exhaust to intake (without the shroud, it might not work very well in bringing cold air where it needs to be). Builds like these were really the ideal usecases for blower style GPUs of the past.

Hey Matt, excellent video, i would recommend that you use an Apu rather than a full blown GPU, that way you save space for airflow and components. Either way the main thin i woul do right now is add airflow on the top of the case, whether you use a discrete or integrated graphics.

Hi, great idea and very unique project. IMHO you should make many small holes just above the CPU fan (and if possible above the GPU fans). This will help with the temps and probably keep the OEM look as the Xbox already has small holes in other parts of its chassis. However, my experience with the Ryzen 5 5600x is that, whilst it is a low tdp cpu, it 100% needs a very good cooler, otherwise it gets easily to 90 degrees celcius under load. The stock AMD cooler cannot provide adequate cooling to this CPU.
@adventureoflinkmk2
@adventureoflinkmk2 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah was gonna say I did the same thing to a digital Dec PC, and also ran into 90 degrees C temps, on both a Ryzen 5 3600 and Ryzen 7 5800u. Custom fitting a 60mm 10000 RPM server fan inside and control with a potentiometer (believe me full speed sounds like a got dang jet engine) as well as using a low profile cooler pretty much made things more manageable. EDIT: and yes indeed the wraith stock cooler didn't help one iota, most likely due to the hat thing over the fan as well as the barely there clearance

Nice build. You can definitely drop 10c or more if you just drill some holes where the CPUs at and make sure the GPU also has ventilation. With your CPU cooler fan oriented that way, it's trying to suck in air thats blocked off so it being 90+ is not surprising. In regards to that EVGA card, the hot air is exhausted through the side fin stacks so a combination of more ventilation and small fans to help direct it out would help alot. An A2000 GPU would probably work well as its less than half the vol of that and takes only 70W or so. Definitely give a look at some of the SFF Yters, they've done some great builds in that size or even smaller. Would definitely be cool to see a part 2 where you polish and shine this up a bit!

That Xbox 360 really only came with a 60GB HDD? Man, gaming has come a long way in a (relatively) short time. I remember when games weren't purely digital and they didn't require so much space. The Xbox One I got (base model, Halo 5 edition) came with 500GB for comparison. Yet that still was barely any space for games when I played it. Nowadays I just play a pc, with a 2TB SSD, 4TB external HDD, and a main hard drive with about 1TB. I only use the SSD for games, but I don't play as many so I have plenty of room.

Let's optimize the airflow: Rotate the grapics card 180° and run a pci extension cable underneeth it. now it all points up and we have an unobstructed path from top to bottomn. Install passive heat sinks on your CPU and if possible, graphics card, with the finns not blocking the airflow. Make sure your heat sinks use the full hight of the case. use shorter power cables, so they don't block the airflow. Install enough small noctua fans in order to use the full length of the console. If possible, install the same ammount on the other side, so they suck the air out, you push in from zhe bottomn. This should provide much better cooling. Maybe you can rewire the power button LEDs, so they work with the RGB protocol, now the console can give you a red ring, when it overheats and a green one, when it's cool.

It's actually easy to see why you never got the Red Ring of Death. You ended up lucking out and getting a late model Jasper system. If you look at the back of the console, you can see the power port has 2 seperate guides on the very top, and missing the one in the middle found on older systems. The manufacture date is also post august 2008, which is when they came out with the Jasper motherboards. These consoles EXTREMELY rarely if not any of them got the red ring of death. That is why you were able to push it to it's limits for countless hours, and it never fail you. Just some professional input. :)

noticed that the exhaust for the two noctua fans is on the bottom the Xbox chassis, to greatly improve the airflow you can remove part of the metal wall that mostly obstructs and creates a solid wall that the hot air can not get through, planning on replicating this project myself and hope to greatly decrease the temps, also plan on using an am5 motherboard with a Ryzen 7700 8 core and a 4060 ti 16gb at maximum these components draw 318W combined and that's with every part I plan to put in which theoretically should work with the same power supply, these components should work with the airflow plans I have so I guess we will have to wait till I have all the parts here and then ill let you know how it goes and maybe you could potentially one up me afterwards!

Asus ROG G21CX is the same size, i've placed RTX4070 into it, 9900K @5ghz , 32GB Ram, 4 disk drives, 1 nvme, AND a working Blu ray drive into it. :) AND RGB. AND magnetic side cover AND it uses less power.

I have done the exact same thing but with a pentium 4 3.0 ghz back in the day, when every 360 was rroded. Had to cut and put a fan on the top cover, but it worked fine. For the power supply I simply extended all the wires around 50sm and suffered massive voltage drops :D

Man you didn't get a 360 until 2009, feelsbadman. I had one in 2005. Clocked THOUSANNNNNNDS of hours on so many games, COD4, GTA IV, World at War, MW2, RDR, Black Ops & so many more!

I've already created a classic xbox with a pc inside, including PSU and video card, but I'm waiting for the next generation of AMD processors, to see if there are any interesting options with integrated graphics, as my plan is to create a pc-xbox360 capable of emulating xbox 360. 5600G has a gpu that I consider very generous, and I hope the next generation has a nice one... In my opinion, the way forward is liquid cooling (so as not to have to tamper with the xbox's plastic case. The problem is finding a radiator that fits. You may have to build one from scratch. As for the PSU, I intend to use the original one from the console .

If you can emulate the Xbox 360 at full speed 1080p on it, then you have succeeded, otherwise you have failed. In I honest opinion, if you build a sleeper build for a computer, it has to be able to emulate the original console that you are disguising it as. In this case you have to run Xenia at full speed otherwise you have failed.

I just can´t get it. Dissasemblying a vintage Xbox in perfect shape just for a video? You didn´t "turned" anything to other thing, just canibalized the case. Misleading video. I don´t like it.

I believe those that were kids in the late 00's, will begin to buy up Xbox360's when they hit 30 to 40 years of age. And those that begin buying them again at the age of 50, will bitch about how expensive they become.

Why don't you make some custom cables? The cables you've used is too long and occupied to much space around the cpu cooler and almost completely blocked the airflow.

That's the Jasper 2009 edition, when they changed the CPU and GPU nanometers from the OG 2005 versions and the 07 Falcon version. They don't overheat much at all.

I looked at that DVD drive and thought should games come on USB stick along with digital? Im loving the application of SSD's and USB sticks these days. All the space saved and heat reduced from PC's to console.

I guess it could be perfect if u put a less power hungry system into it. Something like a GTX 1050ti or a RTX 3050 together with a nice fitting CPU

I know this was a year ago BUT the small noctua fan should be blowing air INTO THE CASE, the CPU COOLER FAN should be blowing air UP (so sucking it through the cooler and blowing it up) and the CPU COOLER FINS SHOULD be aligned with the Noctua fans, so they are blowing air into the fins and the big fan is sucking that air out.... BUT I'm not sure how close the 'case' plastic is to the surface of the CPU cooler fan.... if there is about a half inch then you should be fine - As far as the GPU... I think its fans are RIGHT UP AGAINST the metal case... but there is plastic on the other side of that metal... SO you can remove some of that metal to allow more air to get into the fan AND still look stock on the outside....

Can we get updated versio someday? It would be interesting to see intel gpu with amd cpu build with this. Atleast now the 7000's is out and intel graphics cards have improved. Some smaller variation of the intel gpu could make this kinda neat, because you could route cables and such much better. Ngl even some smaller amd or nvidia gpu would be fine too, but I think that for future the intel gpu+amd cpu platform would be unique and have lots of potential towards emulation/media player. Also someway it would be great if you could only use the original ports of the xbox by extenders, headers and soldering, atleast usb 3 extenders for front and back have just usb-c port or something fancier. Just my thought that run to me when I thought ways of making this kind of modifcation. I would do it myself, but I just don't have enough resources to make it:D But I appreciate that you made this build, I used to play xbox 360 so much when I were younger. Played almost every hit title with it. Gta IV and RDR especially

It’s not overheating so it’s fine. Might need to replace thermal paste a year or two sooner due to temp swings and hardening faster but I wouldn’t worry about 90*

I would have ditched the GPU and chosen a CPU with a graphic unit. Less power, but should be fine for ligher gaming. Noise and heat should be more managable. I would like such a tiny PC for games I don't play on console. (Anyone wanna play Cities Skylines with a controller? Not me.) Or retro games via GOG!

I give you props for attempting this but I wonder how long till you create the same problem that cause the red ring of death. If you don't come up with some seriously good, possibly expensive cooling solutions, you're going to need to drill more holes in the case and metal shroud. You can get some limited improvements from shrouding everything you can to direct airflow but, for example, the CPU & GPU fans... there's nowhere for the air to move, for the most part. More than likely though, without a little desktop CNC router, your hole-pattern will look like crap.(i'm a machinist so take my advise on that) You might be able to come up with some kind of jig system that forces the drill bit to drill uniform. If it were me, I'd just by a materiel with holes in it, paint it white if it's not already white, cut a square over the CPU & under GPU & pop in the pre-made material.. If you MUST have the sleeper look though, ordering custom heat-pipes & making custom fins for the ends is probably what you're going to need to do. If you go to an electronics recycler, you might find some heat-pipe solutions that work Apple desktops & some high-end PC & Apple laptops have long heatpipe configurations & you might be able to bend them to your needs. LET THAT THING BREATH!

512mb of RAM? Oh how things have changed. The xbox one s had 8gb of RAM and the series x has 16gb. My PC has 32gb of ddr5. Respect to microsoft and developers for making these consoles so capable with so little. If you made a pc with double those specs, it wouldn't run a quarter as well.

Good looking build! Are you ever considering putting on the final touches you were talking about? :D Looking at 1:03 explains why the RROD never happened. Consoles after around March/April 2008 if I remember correctly no longer had those issues. Unfortunately my first 360 was from 2007.

My last build in Xbox 360 was Ryzen 5 5600G GT 1030 onboard, Nano ATX. Keeping all the original XBOX parts, Blue Ray drive in the bay, NVMe and DDR 5. The original cooling is not that bad ! I will replace it on next gen Arc onboard now, keeping all the original parts ! just find a dead Xbox, move the old parts in it.

I'm not ready to put my Aorus X570 with an AMD 5 5600G and RT3050 in my XBox 360 yet! 🤭 But great build, I like it! A lot! You should take a little time to breathe sometimes though, and that would make it easier to follow as well (don't want to complain, I'm hooked 😉)

I had a overclocked APU with a AIO in my 360 Elite and it worked as a media PC for years until the DC-DC board burned with the 24pin motherboard header.I went to a few lanpartys where I used it to play CS and COD. The MB was a Asus deluxe board with Wifi/BT and it cost about 350€ when I bought it and when It failed it was already ~4 years old so I scrapped the whole unit as it was not worth rebuilding.
