This is why you will be around long after the retro handheld hype tempers down over the next two years. You talk about things that actually concern gaming and having fun- not just about what custom firmware is so much better than stock, or thumb sticks. So happy to see more backpacking content! As soon as I touched the Miyoo A30 I knew it was going into my pack for my Yosemite hike last month. Featherweight and worth it for 30 minutes of wind down at night. You always need a luxury item or two!

We dont do ultra light camping, but my wife and I took our two kids (5 & 3) camping, twice this summer and it was a blast. Packing everything for the family filled our trunk but we have an air mattress and two dogs to fit in. I brought my steam deck, my wife had her laptop. We set up first, go on a walk with the kids to get energy out, set up our fire space, cook dinner over the fire, chicken kabobs and hot dogs. The kids watched the iron giant in the tent before bed, me and my wife had a couple drinks by the fire and listened to the music. Then in the morning before we left and had to pack up, i played jax and daxter on my steam deck by the lake and my wife played Wingspan on her laptop while we had a coffee. It was a ton of fun. Anyhow, more gaming & camping videos please!

It would be nice if you'd show people how to setup a survival backpack. Like: Don't buy toilet paper but canned food etc. How to setup your phone for the battery to last as long as it can, good powerbank, the last handheld you would take with you, all tech youd consider taking with you. You get the idea. I think people should know things like that. Maybe its a little too dark for a TD video but I'm sure you can make it fun.❤

LOL I am a park ranger and am literally sitting on the side of a trail, all decked out in my trail trimming gear, covered in sweat, and checking my phone like a loser when this video pops up. Love this vibe for you tech dweeb, maybe I ought to return to my roots and go back to playing my gameboy in the woods like I did as a kid! Funny how nature and video games can go together as forms of escapism. I’m pretty sure that learning how to memorize and categorize the first 150 Pokémon trained my brain into how to study zoology in college later on, and even helped me in my early zookeeping career! They even used to call me “snake boy”, now it’s “snake man”, lol.

Great to hear I'm not the only mad man!! I've got into retro handhelds by looking for a console to bring to my mountaineering overnight trips. Since I normally go out in winter, nights are long and there is plenty of time to spend so I carry my RG280V most of the time, it also lets me listen to music without burning my phone battery (which I need for gps and communication). I was a Scout in my youth and in high school I started to bring my DS on camping to kill the extra time during the night, when I started mountaineering I got the idea to do the same trick again but eventually I run out of DS games. Most of the time i just bivouac so my setup is just a a silicon kettle, petrol stove (it will keep melting snow even below freezing), a down sleeping bag and an inflatable mat, besides all the metal equipment for the summit (that's why I want to cut as much weight as posible in my camping gear) instead of a water bottle I bring a thermos and make sure to drink a lot water in the camp before leaving. The handheld and the yerba mate are those quality of life items that allows me to enjoy even more the trips although they make "unnecesary weight", but playing Zelda in the night and drinking mate in the summit are the best rewards after some exhausting walks/climbs. I'll be glad to see another nature + gaming video.

Sounds like a nice setup! Great point about the phone battery. I've had lots of comments about 'just use your phone', but using your phone juice for retro games isn't thinking light! I'm planning on doing a winter ultralight video this year too. Stay tuned for that :D

I've put 80+ hours into Digimon Wolrd 3 on the Playstation on mine 😁 and I'm a large man at 6'4" tall! I am happy to see someone give it some love, I got it back when it was still just a kickstarter concept! I even bought an extra as a backup worried I'd lose the original, but thankfully I still have that on reserve. I also love to backpack, but I don't know what it's like to do so with any less than 80-100 pounds on my back 😅! Either way, ever since the first time I was old enough to pack my own stuff for a backpacking trip, I have always either brought my GameBoy Advance, SP, Micro, DS, and 3DS with me. Nowadays, I always bring the Funkey S and either the Miyoo Mini Plus, Trimui Smart Pro, or the PowKiddy RGB30 with me into the wild, and I leave the Nintendo systems at home away from the dirt and moisture. I also play MTG...do you also disc golf?!

As some used to say about blades in a gun fight, "never bring handhelds and tech toys to a nature quality time"... but if you'll do, don't be so modest: A PS5 with a 70" display and a full power generator running with about 8m³ of smoky fuel should be light enough for half an evening in the wild - and works as a portable heater too! But be assured that gaming in the outside really shouldn't be advised; Friday 13th's Jason, Predator, Werewolves, Godzilla, Yoggi Bear, ants, door to door sellers and all this kind of deadly manaces already are dangerous enough for the people that go camping and keep it's eyes and ears attentive to any falling leaf in the sorroundings. Things could be yet more dangerous with 7.1 HiFi surround sound and bright and high paced videogames distracting the campists.

I do backcountry camping (canoe) in Algonquin provincial park often. While I'm not as weight restricted as you are, I still try too keep my gear light due to the many portages I do! I bring my powkiddyy v90, its pretty light and it's a useable size. Also because it's a clamshell it protects itself when closed and it's bumping around in my backpack and if I does get damaged well it's really cheap too and easy to replace.

If I was to do light backpacking, I would use a modified Game & Watch. They are extremely light at 68g, have a good screen and great controls. They can last up to 6-8 hours on a single charge depending on what you emulate. The only downside is modifying them which involves soldering a very tiny chip and connecting a probe to reprogram them. But even unmoded, the built in games are great for passing some time.

It would choke you inside with the door closed. Long story short, I don’t think we are going to a site without a proper bathroom/showers at the least. No idea how you can hike that long and not be desperate for a shower by the second day. My wife thought I was a bit of a baby 😂 I did bring my Odin 2 and got to play a little bit. I got a Nano after your camping video last year. I ended up using it way more than I thought (seriously, thank you for the idea) but ultimately decided I wanted a slightly larger screen. I ended up getting a GKD Pixel and it now lives in my messenger bag or backpack when hiking. The Nano now lives in the car, quick at hand if I'm out somewhere where I might have to wait a bit (restaurant, doctor's office, etc) and, by some odd twist of fate, I don't have my ever-present messenger bag. I do (day) hiking mostly, with some camping. I want to do more of the latter and am currently trying to decide on a water filtration setup. Not quite ultra-light just yet. I think most people tend to start out with too much gear and, over time, weed out the unused & poor choices, and get down to just the essentials. I'm slowly getting there. The extra weight of the Pixel is a compromise I'm happy to make. I also sometimes toss in my (Kobo) e-reader.

This is cool. My future plan is to build a medium-sized bike-camper (basically a casket on wheels) with solar so I can take LONG trips and go to the beach in the efternoon, take a swim, game (without running out of juice) and fall asleep to the sound of ocean waves and then take a morning dip the next day before going home (normally ONLY go in the afternoon). Would not go for a handheld as small as this but I do like a camping/gaming video. 3/4 of the year (and sometimes the last 4th as well) here is CRAP so would like to get out more in the better months. Don't have any pointers but cool upload. 👍
