If custom firmware does actually become available for this, then I'll pull the trigger. I would definitely need to curate the game set on something this basic but I really love the SNES controller look. I have the Anbernic 353M because it's just more practical for me in my situation but i REALLY wanted the 353P because of the SNES controller look. It just ended up being to big and not subtle enough for me in terms of a being a pocketable carry around town thing. On the other hand, this Data Frog thing would be an easy buy for the nostalgia hit as long as I could tweak it a bit.

Mine Just arrived today and I very quickly discovered how nice it is to play on tv with the second controller switched to player one! The second controller still serves a Huge purpose even without a second player. It is smaller, lighter, the start and select buttons are in their classic positions which is great, and you can keep the console by the tv while you play wireless across the room instead of being limited in distance by the length of the cord! That Really makes me want to get another controller to see if I can do two player tv wireless. I understand if it didn't work somehow and either way I am very happy that I got the extra controller package just for wireless one player whether on console, tv, projector even.

Bro, I bought one of these on temu, I was very impressed at first with the roms list and still am to be honest. With that being said, my unit may have serious battery issues. While my batteries aren't catching on fire, the battery that came with it died in less than a week, on top of that I put in another battery of the same type from my vape stuff and that battery is now fully dead too. The worst part is, both batteries died after the 2nd recharge after first use. This may be a battery killer. Honestly the roms list may be the best value for this particular handheld, providing you have the ability to use it in another device. So I'm a PC nerd, cuz, and I happen to have an Intel compute stick I've been dying to make a portable plug in PC/streambox/retro game player. I'm going to go through my spare vape batteries and probably buy 1 brand new battery of exact specification before I give up on this handheld. Either way, I look forward to putting the micro SD card from this into my Intel compute stick. 😊 Added, I luv how you call this a "beater", because it's cheap AF.

You can put Samsung 25r batteries or Sony VTC 6. That thumstick work nice for some games. "But her face!" It hates lots of enemies in GBA games,it hates parallax scrolling in GBA. did they enjoy them? ordered one for my friends kid for christmas, going to limit the amount of roms to only the best games, then give him more over time. The problem i still feel is possible with these is like the older versions of these, the old controller with a set of wires coming out of it that you plug into your tv that grandparents get for their grandkids from some dodgy market stall, and all the roms are trash, and theres like 20,000 of them, so theres no way the kids could even find the good games if they tried. though these new products are definitely a step up from those, they all still seem to do the same thing with just filling them with roms to the point that i think most kids would get overwhelmed.

Ok you sold me on this one. I ordered it from UK will come after 25th July. Already downloaded and flashed the latest firmware. Its probably end up as a xmax gift after some rigorous testing :P. I still use a family pocket from a couple of years ago for £23 pounds for gb, gbc, md and low end arcade , also V90 to play my gba games and playstation.

I really enjoy your videos but there are just so many of these devices now across such a wide range of prices. I thought i was going to spend $100 on myself for my birthday, but maybe this would do it. But would i wish I'd spent a bit more? Feels like it's time for a best in price bracket type summary review of the current and recent offerings. Also, without having really been exposed to all the options I'm not even sure up to what level of performance I'm looking for. I enjoy the odd five minutes of galaxian, or donkey Kong, but am i missing out on more advanced, albeit older titles?
@TechDweeb Жыл бұрын
You MIGHT wish you spent more. This device doesn't have complete rom sets for instance, so if you'd be disappointed that your favourite game isn't on here then yeah, just spend more. This is good for the price, and you can have lots of fun with it, but it's not a 'complete' experience. As for my favourites, I think the Powkiddy v90 is a great bang-for-the-buck, and it's like $40, if you like the clamshell form factor (amzn.to/3pjpsWX). And the RG35XX (amzn.to/3qX52n9) or Miyoo Mini + (amzn.to/46ivKGU) are also amazing choices (those are full-featured, so you won't be missing out on any games for the older systems, and they can do PS1). At the $100ish price range or if you want 3d systems, the RG353PS (amzn.to/3pg3MLm) or RG353VS (amzn.to/3p7QQHv) are really good for PS1 and most N64, dreamcast, and PSP. Hope this helps!

@@TechDweeb just ordered the RG353PS. I like the styling and form factor and I think you said the 4:3 screen ratio made the most sense with the older stuff. Thanks for the tips

@@imaginitivity7853wise choice. You definitely should be treating yourself to something a little more nice, I say. The Data Frog is just a cheap novelty console - and if it were your only system, you would have been kicking yourself for not spending a little more on a more quality system.

I'm making an updated video review to this handheld, as your review is getting a little bit old and I'd like to add a little bit to it. Anything you could recommend that would help the video's performance?

Im stoked they uodated the firmware. I want to get my neighbor's 9 year old girl who hangs out with us all the time and always wants to play games, something small that she can play that i can curate the games lost and give her like 50 or 100 games like pokemon to play. $15 right now on sale. Ill also get the cobtrollers since theyre $5 for another two controllers. That raises a question. How the hell do they connect the controllers to the handheld? It cant possibly have a bluetooth or 2.5ghz internal band. The only real shame is no headphone jack. I would like to give her some headphones too. I just wanted to find something that could do GBA pokemon and below for like $30 or less and wasnt a piece of junk. I really wished the anbernic nano was around $30, since she particularly has a huge obsession with "tiny" things and it would have ticked her pink. But $50 is a little more than i wanted to spend on a child that wasnt mine, lol. The v90 was also juuuuust pushing it on price.

I grabbed a set of the controllers on a recent sale too. I want to see how well it does on the TV.

@@TechDweeb I noticed on the box for an unboxing that it mentions it has 2.4ghz built in. If it has that, wtf. How. For $20, with two wireless controllers as well. Either way, we'll find out in a few weeks!

@@colinmartin9797 so were they wireless? any issues with them either way?
@colinmartin9797 Жыл бұрын
@@ge2719 yep! The handheld has a dual band 2.4ghz chip in it. Zero setup at all, both controllers natively worked like a freaking wireless SNES. It's kinda nuts.

"NOVELTY", is the key word. forget all those high-priced devices, that do the same thing. how many retropies are there, almost one every week. for $20, this is a safe bet. it's not perfect, but you get your money's worth and more. I love mine. always in my pocket.

Back in the day when I was a kid, for $20 all I could get was a Tiger Handheld game and we all know how shitty those were and are since they only had one game on them. Too bad something like this wasn't out back then.

Had mine for a while now and switched out 18650 with Samsung and didn't change battery performance and the battery bar is junk because when it's drops to 3 it drops super fast and if it runs out playing a game it corrupts the game (did for me). SNES games that aren't running right switch the system settings to PAL and it fixes the performance. Other than that it's a amazing cheap good for what it is handheld

because theyre all so old they cant monetise them anyway. what they going to ask for, a dollar a game? people wouldn't pay it. Best way to look at it, is these things get kids hooked on their brands. then ten years down the line theyre buying the latest mario/zelda game. You cant put a price tag on that sort of free marketing.

But Techdweeb, how does it compare to your favorite cheap handheld from a brand with your second favorite name, the Powkiddy V90?
@TechDweeb Жыл бұрын
V90 is better, but more expensive. This is cheaper, but not as good. If you have the extra $10-$15 to spend the V90 is the best choice, but if not, even for $20 this provides a lot of retro fun.
