Thanks for creating this very helpful video! It was very easy to follow the instructions. I used to get bad signal in my bedroom. I had an old Airport Express that I was not using, and after watching this video I connected that to the Airport Extreme, and it worked beautifully. Now the signal is so much better in my bedroom. Thanks again!

I know this is a really old video, but you just helped me tremendously! Thank you for posting this. I have a detached studio on my property and I've tried wirelessly extending my second airport extreme from the main house with pretty bad results and significantly reduced speeds. I bought a Cat6 outdoor cable and ran it from the main Airport Extreme to the studio one, reset it, and now I have EXCELLENT connection! Thank you again!

This is AWESOME. I upgraded to a new Extreme 6 months ago and no matter what I did to follow Apple's instructions, it would never see my old unit which I wanted to use to extend my network. So I gave up. Found this video this am and had it working in minutes. THANK YOU!

I'm still using my old Apple Extreme, not to jinx myself but never had a problem with it. I just need one extra port to connect a Tablo:) I have a Cat 6 ethernet cord someone gave me on hand, would that work ok with my Apple Extreme? I'm looking to buy an unmanned ethernet switch soon.

I just resently add a second Apple router as an wifi extender and it was ridiculously easy. I no longer have any Wi-Fi dead spots. The only thing I did differently was the second one I used as an extender I used the same network name and password and after doing that I had no connection issue with any of my devises.

Convenience was the primary factor in my choice to go with Apple over other routers. The hardest part of the setup was taking it out of the box! I really do appreciate the way Apple makes their products so simple and easy to understand. I live in a 3 bedroom, 3 floor townhouse and the AirPort Extreme manages to cover nearly every sq.inch with an excellent signal. My garage seems to have the weakest reception out of all areas tested and I spend a lot of time there so I may consider extending my network in the future. Thanks for the video.

Bought an express five years ago and it has been 100% troublefree. I tried netgear and belkin before that and got tired of all the issues,daily reboots,etc. Apple makes the best routers known to me! I just ordered an extreme to use as my basestation and the express I will use as an extender. I’ll try wireless first then maybe hardwire it later if needed. I guess they stopped making routers maybe because they kind of hit a ceiling, there is no need for anything better than an extreme. It’ll likely be ten years before anyone will need anything better.great video!

These videos are packed with information - sometimes seems slow, but when I need the detail, it's all there. These are a lot more useful than the Apple websites, which seem strangely out of date and unhelpful on this subject. And it's great to see you having fun with technology. Thank you. One thing that I found particularly difficult was using the Airport Utility on the Mac. It's got a lot of options and I didn't know where to start when setting up a new wireless base station. This video was great, because the set up on the iPhone is easy. It would be great to see this done on the Mac as well.

I have an AirPort Extreme (6th generation)as my main router. I wanted to extend my network as I have a weak spot in my bedroom. I purchased an older AirPort Extreme (2nd generation) and tried extending. It appeared to work at first, but now it seems to drop a lot. My question is, is it not ideal since they are both different generations? According to some research it appears the older version can do either 5Gh or 2.4GH, but not dual. I assume it’s ideal to have the same generation Apple routers talking to each other? Any thoughts? I know sadly Apple is out of the router business now. Thanks!

Thanks for the video. Setting up was pretty easy. I picked up 2 of these and maybe a 3rd though I dont think I need the 3rd. Im with you on using LAN cables over WiFi when possible. 75% of my devices are by cable. Heck even fire stick had a LAN adapter. These Airport extremes can be picked up on Ebay for 40$. Just have patience and dont overbid. These units beat out my Linksys EA6900 that's just a few year old and was starting to have many disconnects when Using PLEX media server. So far so good with the Airports. Most of my devices are apple and I think they play very nice together. Im happy not having to spend 300$ on a high end router. Cable > Modem > MAIN Extreme > Extreme 1, and Extreme 2, 8-Port Gigabit Switch. Extreme 1 > PS4, and Apple TV. Extreme 2 > another Apple TV, and a printer? 8-Port Gigabit Switch > External Hard Drive 1, External Hard Drive 2, External Hard Drive 3, DVD player, Home Phone, and Computer? Time Capsule is linked via wifi. I'm assuming that: the other Extremes are on the 2.5 GHz wifi channels, the external Hard Drives are for video editing and or movies, the modem is the Arris Motorola Surfboard Modem, The Gigabit Switch is TP-Link or Netgear brand.

Hello. Thanks for the info. Very helpful. I want to reconfigure/setup my wireless network. Current configuration works but I am not using all the tools/hardware I have available for maximum benefit, I have multiple dead spots, and am not leveraging network hard drive/backup sharing, printer sharing, etc. So want to start over and setup properly. In past this was done by pros way back when with other gear/ISPs and modems, etc. Been maintaining and getting to work myself but think I am making it harder than it should be after watching you video! I have never seen a apple extreme or express setup outside of Airport Utility! I use the utility and go in and configure manually and seeing how you did it was MUCH easier, but my issues might be I am mostly windows. I have a Comcast High Speed internet and modem (not wireless), 1 newer Apple Extreme Tower, 2 older apple extremes (1 model before tower, then an older 1), multiple Airport Expresses, Windows 10 Desktop, Windows 10 on Surface Book, Android phone, Apple iPad2 (old version, 2nd model I believe, 5+ yrs old?). I have ability to hardwire Extremes and/or expresses in different corners of my colonial. I have multiple separate sound systems in house so I use Expresses/Extremes to stream music from main desktop that houses 200GB of music on an external hard drive. I believe that should be a shared network drive for whole network but currently just attached to desktop. I am wondering if I should do that factory reset solution you showed in this video and start over, all way back to initial Extreme attached to modem and then setup all extenders USING the iPad and the auto setup you showed on your phone? Will that work on an older iPad? You didn't show setting up main Extreme attached to Modem, only Extenders, but if that can be setup like you showed on iPhone using my iPad, maybe starting over with everything to factory settings is worth a try? Appreciate any thoughts/suggestions. Sorry for long message but this has caused me lots of hours and think I am making it harder than it should be. Teenagers not happy with wireless network and giving me grief! Thanks!

Sos setup of main Extreme is fairly similar, just choose Create New Network option for the main router, then follow what I did for each extender. The Apple Routers are easiest setup from the Airport Utility.

+Kristian Nøhr interesting, so you are using Ethernet cables to connect them together? I am trying to do this but have them connected through a switch. It's a netgear switch but I'm not sure if its managed or unmanaged. Does that matter? The only way I can get it to work is to extend the wireless network of the base station. The airport extreme extension is in bridge mode. If I unplug the Ethernet cable, it keeps on ticking so i think it's set up in repeater mode. Speed is much less than near the base station. The base station is Airport Extreme Time Capsule and the extension is an older 4th gen airport extreme.

If the ethernet from the main to the roaming Extreme goes through a switch, it should not matter (Apple says). However, I tried to set up my run of ethernet to the roaming unit so it went strait from the main Extreme to the remote (an Express in this case). Even there, there is one cable break (so if I wanted to add a switch I could later). I guess technically, it is a one plug switch. No problems.

I have a question. I have a Airport extreme 6TH GEN, but I also have a 3TB Time capsule that I have used for a while. Is it possible to introduce the Airport Extreme and keep the Time Capsule separate? When I start to setup the AE tells me that it will resort my TC to its default settings. How will this impact my TC's performance. What I wanted to do was have them operate separate of one another, but it looks like I may need to extend the network. Suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.

On the same network it is best to use it to extend the same network, having dual routers is usually not a good idea. If you do reset it, it does not erase the time capsule drive, only the network settings.

Just got one from AAFES for 50% off. Setting it up was a pain but then again, I have Japanese internet. It's so limited vs. other routers. I still don't know how to check the generation so I don't know how it compares on the AC chipset for speeds. I can say that one SSID is nice and verified that I am connected to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz simultaneously. I also like the active cooling (fan on bottom) which most high end routers DO NOT have (such as my Asus RT-N66U). I wish it came with Win OS install instructions even if no disc is present. I imagine that is why it was returned as it seems the wiring was not unwrapped or black sticker on bottom.

Doesn't hitting "Extend Network" extend it wirelessly regardless of whether or not the WAN cable is plugged in? I think you need to setup the main router, then just set the other APs in bridge mode with the same SSID, security protocol and password. My wife used your vids to create a Apple newwork with two Apple WiFI routers (the skinny one and the tower one. Now she can not remember or figure out to link the skinny one to the tall one. Can you point her to your video where U explained how to do this, she can not find it now. Thank You

Just curious, why not use airport express as extenders? Just wondering because I use expresses in my basement and upstairs and want to know if using extra extremes is better or is it all the same?

Can I extend the network wired and wireless? Looking for ways to extend my network for both wired and wireless solution. I have 2Airport extreme and one express. Currently I have 3 different SSCD's but wanting to have just one SSCD. this way I can have one wired network through the house and one wireless SSCD. So, when I'm on iPad it'll just be on one wireless SSCD. Is this possible with your set up? Thanks

+Law W yes, wired and wireless with only one SSID

I tried this many times to extend my wifi with the time capsule 3TB - however always get an Unexpected Error. Ended up generate wifi with same SSID and than it finally worked. Don't understand why the wifi extention does not work

Great video: thanks for putting it together! I am curious why the wifi bars on your phone stayed at 2/3. Ideas? I was hoping it would kick in once the new router light turned green but no...

I want to do the exact setup, but through powerline networking. Will that work as well? I don't see why not, but want to make sure.

Question? the wired way you show on here, does that create the same SSID for your whole house and the device just attach to the strongest signal? I have an express and time capsule and did mine similar, the only difference being they are both wired directly from my main router.
@techgooch8 жыл бұрын
You could do the same SSID or different ones at each, your choice.

Do the APEs require that there is 1 main AirPort that is in true "router mode" (AirPort instead of Comcast or FIOS router doing DHCP/NAT) like the Google WiFi, or will the roaming network (all using Ethernet backhaul) work with all as wireless bridges. Google Wifi rewuires 1 of the 3+ APs to be in true router mode.. I want to use FIOS router with Airport Extremes as roaming AP bridges. Your thoughts??
@mongo20445 жыл бұрын
The Fios rental router is only needed if you have cable TV. I stupidly paid for it for over year (with no TV). Then switched to Comcast. Then back to Fios (this was all chasing the best price). By then, I knew I could ask the tech (free because, I was a “new” customer) to run ethernet from the ONT ethernet jack to where my Airport Extreme was located. He said, that was how Fios preferred it! Since I had a cable card and just basic TV channels, I had no need for the expensive Fios cable TV box either. Instead, I use and HDHomeRun Prime and watch via Apple TVs, computer, or any device on my network. The catch is that you need to run ethernet to devices like Apple TV or Fire TV for sure or the channels are unreliable. OK, so you can ditch the Fios router if you are just internet or internet and land line phone. If you need the Fios router for big cable selection, then you can set the Fios into bridge mode and attach an Airport as the main router to feed out from to other Airports.

Can I extend the wifi signal connecting the airport extreme to the company router? The question is because my brother wants to keep the company's router and I have the AirPort Extreme doing nothing so I want to extend the wifi signal to the basement. Thank yo!!,
@techgooch8 жыл бұрын
+Fernando Ramirez yes, you can do that. It would be a WiFi repeater most likely, but it depends on the setup.

I guess I'm not even going to plug in thr Nighthawk x8, I'll just go buy a airport extreme. I have the old airport extreme and express and I need to extend it a little more. Let's see how that goes.

I really enjoyed your video. I too have always used the Apple AirPort extreme routers because...well they've been bulletproof for me, even though lately I've been reseting more. Some background: I just purchased another 4K TV to go along with my current 4K tv, and on these I will be streaming 4k content from Netflix and Amazon prime. My PS4 Pro arrives next month - so, my home setup will consist of the 2 tv's (both with Apple TV connected), my PS4 pro, and 2 Mac computers that i use in my office. My wife and i both have smartphones and our home network is our wifi. Here's my question: are you using an Arris internet modem to connect your office extreme to? If so, how are your speeds? I have an Arris DG1670 internet modem and router that connects to my extreme, but I'm thinking of build out my wireless network using a Netgear Nighthawk AC5300 X8 triband router. I live in a internet intensive neighborhood, and I dont want to give up ANY BANDWIDTH to my neighbors lol. I'm connecting to the internet via Spectrum Cable (formerly Time Warner), as a ultimate 300mps customer. Any thoughts on whether or not I should extend the network with the Nighthhawk as the main router (replacing the extreme), or just extend the extreme and get closer to my other devices throughout the house? Your thoughts are appreciated.

+djceejaay so first off, I am not a big fan of the X8, I did a review of it actually. If I was running what you are, I would probably upgrade to a newer MU-MiMo router, and my first recommendation would be one of the new Linksys. I just received a Linksys WRT-3200ACM that I will be reviewing soon, and they also offer one of their Max-Stream with MU-MiMo 5400. That is where I would start looking, but currently I run the eero system and also think that is a great choice for most people.

How do your portable devices (iPhone/iPad/Laptop) deal with being moved around? I've heard that they can hold on to a bad connection to a router you are moving away from until you toggle wifi on/off.
