5 open source programs I have and use and love and that people should know about: 7-Zip. Great archiving tool that can read most archive formats you will find (zip, rar, 7z, tar, gz, bz2 and others). Inkscape. Something I don't see much on these likes of "great free software" but that totally should be there. Its basically a free version of software like Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw. Filezilla. For those who still use FTP for file transfers (or the various more secure related protocols like SFTP) its a really good option. FFMPEG. A great way to convert media of all sorts, FFMPEG can probably read more media formats (including all kinds of weird, obscure and proprietary formats) than any other converter on the planet. It can also play back all those funky formats. VLC. Really good media player that among other things is the simplest and easiest way I have found to play DVDs on a PC if that's something you want to do.

@@LadyWhinesalot I think OP is more asking about a free software that let's you take a "snapshot" of whatever customizations you've made to a stock OS install (software installed, settings changed, etc) and restore them once you do a fresh install of the OS. Data backup on its own is fairly simple so even if an app does everything BUT data it's still really useful.

A dedicated IDE will always be better than Visual Studio Code for complicated projects. VSCode is simply not capable of dealing with large projects as efficiently as something like JetBrains Rider or Visual Studio 2019 for C/C++/C#, or JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse IDE for Java. However, if you are just working with Python, HTML, or Markdown files, you should be fine with VSCode.

I started using Glarys after I got rid of ccleaner (a few weeks ago). At first I liked it, but then I found out that it was slowing down my computer. Yesterday I watched this video and decided to try out Bleachbit. It's really simple to use, and even though it doesn't have all the options that Glarys has, I like Bleachbit better. It removed more stuff than Glarys did, and it doesn't run in the background. The only thing I want running in the background is my antivirus software. EDIT: One more thing- because Glarys does have a few options that I'll miss, I will occasionally download it for a day, and then get rid of it again using Revo Uninstaller (which is much better than using Windows program uninstall).
@woofer133 жыл бұрын
@callag63 Thank you. I feel stupid right now. I didn't notice that I had to click "apply" at the bottom. I guess I never noticed that before. My Avast antivirus kept telling me that Glarysoft was slowing down my computer, so I'll see if they warn me anymore. Thanks again. :-)

@fawzanfawzi99933 жыл бұрын
My opinion for every program you listed: 1. I don't use waterfox but It's a good start since Mozilla wants to censor the Internet. I personally would go with Librewolf as it's based of more recent Firefox version but it's currently only on Linux. If you use waterfox, please let me know about its experience. 2. I would go with MPV as it is more lighter than SMplayer and it does support Mac OS. I'll try SMplayer regardless. 3. Onlyoffice is so good that I outright refuse to install MS Office on my new Laptop. I used this for my college assignment and it gets the job done pretty well. 4. I don't find any benefit of running cleaning program but, if you do, go with this one and avoid CCleaner at all cost. 5. It happens that I take computer science major and Atom is my choice of code editor. If you want VScode without Microsoft's BS, go with VScodium. BONUS: Freetube is a client for KZbin without all those trackings, ads, and the stupid "KZbin Kids" banner. You can even download video using this app as well.
@soulaesthete85633 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing the Freetube info. I've never heard of it, but I'll certainly give it a try. As for Waterfox, it's a good browser and can use the Firefox extensions, I've used it for years. However, it lags sometimes and isn't quite as fast as some of the other browsers out there. By the way, I really wanted to try LibreWolf, but I'm on Windows.
