Update: there was a strand of hair stuck in between the hinge. I took it out, and now it works normally 🤯. Just a single strand 25:12 Well, my hinge is broken. When I close the lid, it takes a lot of extra force to close the last piece of the hinge, it feels as if I’m bending the whole thing. I examined it and I guess the last part of the hinge that is supposed to move at the end has some problem. It takes a lot of force to close it and only closes halfway, causing tension between the other parts of the hinge and causing the lid to snap open just at a touch, and it then hovers parallel to the base and the webcam side being 1.5cm above the keyboard. Also when it stays closed, there is a 1mm gap between the edges of the tablet and the keyboard, i.e. when it is closed, I can see 1mm of the keyboard edge instead of the tablet edge being plush with it. Pls check it with ur surface book 2 and 3 if the last part of the hinge actually moves and closes all the way through. If u do read this comment, tell me how I can send you the photos and video of the problem with my Book 2. I guess I’m one of the very first people to have this issue since there’s no one talking abt this on internet.

This has to be THE most thorough review of the SB3 that I've seen, and I have watched PLENTY of reviews from all of the top and not-so-top reviewers on KZbin. I really want it but I don't think the price justifies the subpar performance compared to what's out there and the Ryzen 4000 series laptops currently and soon-to-be released over the next few months. But you cannot doubt the sleek look, compactness, and multi-purpose. My only critic is no mention of the various configuration and price points. I really learned of some new functionality. Keep up the good work!

I have the 15" SB2. In my previous job, I flew all around the world with it, usually going single-bag, which could get pretty stuffed with a week's worth of clothes, dress shoes, the dock, the power brick and tech accessories. Yet it sailed through all of that and looks the same as when I bought it. I occasionally had to blow off lint from inside the hinge, but nothing more substantial ever found its way in there.

Book 2 user here😊 👍 I like this review, it is full of details for the previous generation experience. But there is one other thing you did not mention, other than the hinge itself, there is a flaw in the screen itself, most of the laptop like Macbook has a rubber ring covering the edge of the screen to prevent strong force when closing the screen. But Microsoft chose to sacrifice the protection for beauty. Some users experienced cracking the screen accidentally. Fortunately, Microsoft does give them a replacement and I bought a case for my SB2, so no issue so far, except the thermal throttling issue, the cooling system is really bad to me, I fixed it by undervolting and speed shift by ThrottleStop

I received my surface book 3 today and was using it, I found out that it gets really warm on the back of the tablet portion is this normal? I got temperatures maxing out when I did a cina bench the temp all the way to 100 Celsius/212° I didn’t stay there long but it spiked all the way to that temperature then it stayed close to that range. Also I I haven’t heard the fans kick on from the tablet portion but I have heard it from the base. Does that mean it’s a really well designed? I have the surface book 13.5 inch 32 gigs of RAM and the dedicated graphics card with four gigs of RAM.
@TechisodeTV4 жыл бұрын
The tablet portion does get pretty hot when you're doing some heavy work with it like gaming or exporting video files. It was the same for the Surface Book 2. It's not concerning, that's just how it works. If it gets hot enough, you'll hear fans kick on.
@efrenlopez924 жыл бұрын
Techisode TV oh ok thank you I was wondering if this was normal.
@mac38644 жыл бұрын
The 13.5" version is passively cooled and has no fan in the tablet portion. This means it can get quite hot and take longer to cool down than the 15". This is one of the main reasons I went with the 15" versions for SB2 and SB3. If you are doing demanding work at your deks, you can get a small desktop fan and point it at the back of you screen, this can make a big difference to the thermals if you are maxing out your CPU for long periods.

Thanks for the review a lot. I would like to know how much the battery in new book 3 works long as a tablet itself and with the base with every day tasks not gaming? I would be very grateful if you could tell me how much the battery in your surface book 2 degraded for 2.5 years of using. @TechisodeTV4 жыл бұрын
Definitely a great choice for school work unless you're in school for some really intense 3D modeling, 4k videography, or animation work. It also doesn't work well at all for VR (in case you were hoping to do that too). If you don't need a ton of processing power, you can save some money and get a surface pro instead. The keyboard won't be as nice, but it'll be cheaper and offer most of the same features of the tablet portion. Alternatively, you could get the Surface Book 2 since the performance boost won't be very noticeable if you aren't doing CPU or GPU heavy tasks.

There's a lot cheaper you can get if this is just serving as backup. No GPU in that model, and it is the only one with an i5. Dell XPS 13 can be had for several hundreds of dollars less, but obviously if you need the detachable screen and pen input then the Surface Book may be the way to go. I have the Book as my primary device and it is killer. Just be cautious when getting the bottom level to make sure you really need the extra widgets, as there are several that can be had for a better price.

Hey there! I'm interested in the Surface Book 3 and really liked your videos. I was wondering if you could hook up a VR system (I have the HTC Vive) to this and show us if it works? I've seen nothing about running VR off of this, but I avoided the Surface Book 2 primarily because of some weird power and graphics card throughput issues that were reported that didn't make it possible. Thanks for your consideration!
@TechisodeTV4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! For VR, I would get a different laptop. Even Windows Mixed Reality headsets don't work well with the Surface Book 3 (or Surface Book 2 for that matter). I'll explain this in more detail in a future video, but, basically, Microsoft uses custom GPU drivers which often break VR headset compatibility for literally months at a time. When I first got my Surface Book 2, it took literally one full year until they fixed a bug in the intel driver that caused the colors to be super washed out in VR headsets. Then, there were multiple times where I'd get an update and the VR environment would stutter like crazy. Even when VR did work, it wasn't perfect. Also, Oculus officially does NOT support any Surface device for VR, that includes the Oculus Quest. Long story short, the Surface Book 2 and Surface Book 3 are probably the last laptops I'd buy if I wanted to do any VR gaming. Truth be told, after running a bunch of tests, I'm honestly not impressed with the performance of the Surface Book 3 (I'll discuss this in much more detail in an upcoming video). So much so that I'll be returning my Surface Book 3 because, for my particular use case, it's just not powerful enough.The Surface Book 3 is really for people who don't care for gaming or VR and just want a 2 in 1 that is powerful enough for a moderate workload (light photoshop work or 1080p video editing. It doesn't work well for 4k video editing). I hope that helps!

The wd15 dock does work with my surface book 3 via usb c, however it is not as smooth as i would like. The other thing is that the wd15 dock is connected via hdmi to my monitor, and when i plug the dock into my surface book,, the external monitor is not detected. i have to unplug the hdmi from the wd15 and plug it in again, and it works. So i have to do all these to have the dock charge and provide connection to my monitor. Am i missing something here? like a driver or something? Or is this expected since the dock is DELL and my laptop is MICROSOFT?

I am considering this for my husband who loves painting on his surface pro 3, but also wants to use Adobe Premiere and After Effects. He also needs to do boring excel stuff for work and bring it with him using the tube across London. I noticed down below in the comments that you intend to return this because it is not powerful enough. Do you think it would be unsuitable for what we want it to do? Thinking of the i7 32gb, 512 SSD in 13.5 so it is comfortable to paint sitting in his chair watching TV.
@TechisodeTV4 жыл бұрын
It'll be more than powerful enough for painting and Adobe Premiere if he's only doing 1080p video editing. It's technically fast enough for 4k if you drop the playback resolution and don't watch the video at 2x playback speed (something I do often to speed up editing). After Effects is the wildcard as it depends heavily on how advanced his use of it is. The Surface Book 3 can handle some light work, but if he starts adding multiple 3D bodies overlaid on multiple 4k video layers, the workflow will be much slower. It'll work, but he'll be watching the playback at about 3 to 5 frames per second. That said, after effects isn't meant to be played back like a video editor, it's made to add effects, then export them to a dedicated video editor like Premiere, which can play it back in real time. But to be clear, the surface book is the best device for artists. So if 90% of his use will be painting, you won't find a better device than the surface book line. I hope that helps!

Have you had issues with it randomly restarting? I had an original surface book and had to return it because it was so glitchy. I still love the surface book though and want to give the 3rd one a shot. Fully decked out. Do you still like yours?

Is it possible to replace the SSD & battery without damaging the unit? Thanks 4 Sharing
@TechisodeTV4 жыл бұрын
Not easily. The screen is glued to the body of the tablet so you would likely have to heat the tablet portion and separate the screen using a screen puller. It would certainly void the warranty and you might break the screen in the process.

Can you please tell me if it has a cooling fan in the tablet?

You can install Bluestacks and emulate Android on windows. I have not used Bluestacks for a good couple of years. It was always buggy and annoying but it does work and will allow you to use Android apps on the Surface.

Dude, I left my SB2 on an overpriced improperly balanced trash piece of a stand and as I stood in the kitchen waiting for my food to be done in the microwave oven I heard a loud crashing sound coming from the bedroom. Unsure of what it could have been I decided nothing was going to come between me and last nights Chinese takeaway. No amount of Singapore fried noodles with sweet and sour shredded beef could ever be worth the sight of your £3000 laptop face down on your wood floor looking like its dream of being a Magicians assistant had literally been cut short. I think that any other laptop would have left me crying into the most expensive bowl of leftovers ever

Haha, gotta love leftover Chinese food! And that's nuts! I'm taking it your SB2 was perfectly fine?

Seriously though, do not ever lay or place your laptop of any kind on the floor. Especially if you have toddlers in the house. LOL

Hi! I have a question, without the surface adapter (sold separate hahaha) how can I connect the surface to an external monitor? Does an USB-C to HDMI work? Thanks ❤️

Hi guy! Kindly thanks for your great video and little comparison between 2 versions. And, it should be perfect if you can clarify for me 2 questions because I really like Surface Book and I will take it in the near future. 1st question, has Surface Book 2 got the charging at the bottom of the clipboard as Surface Book 3. And 2nd question, can you use Surface Book 3 charger to charge Surface Book 2. As you said and many people also noticed that when using Surface Book 2 for heavy gaming, it also drains battery due to not enough power from charger, but the Surface Book 3 has more powerful charger, can we use it to charge Surface Book 2, that we can play heavy games without draining battery. Until now, I have 1 more question which just appeared. If you use Surface Dock (or Dock 2) to charge Surface Book 2, if it still drain battery when heavy gaming? There's a lot of questions but I hope you can help me to make clear. Thanks in advance!

Yep, the Surface Book 2 can charge from the bottom of the tablet as well. The 127W charger works with the surface book 2, but I don't know if it charges at the full 127W yet. I'm still testing that out. The original surface dock only supported about 102W charging if I remember correctly, so that one won't keep a Surface Book 2 charged under heavy gaming. The Surface Dock 2 does support the full 127W charging, but I'm still not sure if the Surface Book 2 supports that charge rate yet. I'll try to get this answered in an upcoming video :)
