SteamOS becoming one of the primary OSs would be really funny but good as well.
@johndoh5182Ай бұрын
It would be far more than funny. If they put the resources into its development along with say, AMD and Intel who would be better off having their hardware run under Linux (as in a distro that users don't need to keep getting out to the command line), AND they make installing apps and games as easy as it is under Windows, and for the most part apps ARE that easy to install on many distros, you'd see real movement of consumers away from Windows. And if I were AMD and Intel I'd take this seriously since Microsoft would rather their OWN devices run better under Windows than X86-64 processors. You'd just have to convince Americans they're better off without Microsoft office and maybe small donations to entities making open source office suites is a good idea.

In fact if I were AMD and Intel I'd be putting resources into helping this happen because Microsoft has their own motives of making their OWN devices look better running Windows than X86-64 processors, since after all they want to be like Apple and trap you into their ecosystem.

I feel all this SteamOs news is pretty much Valve trying to take advantage of all the recent backlash that Microsoft has been experiencing with Windows
@l4rkdonoАй бұрын
Bro it ain't that deep. Valve just doesn't want to rely on another company and be self-sufficient. Also 99% of people don't give a crap about the backlash. They have lives.

I dumped Windows six months ago, and, while there are some gotchas, my overall Linux experience has made a solid believer of a guy pushing sixty. If SteamOS 3.0 will work with my nVidia GPU, I'll jump to it in a heartbeat.

Every time I hear the term "Steam Machine" I think of something that cleans rugs. Valve should have made them cube shaped and called them the SteamCube. But who knows, Nintendo may have a secret patent on cube shaped consoles too. lol

I've currently got a little mini PC running windows using regedit to boot straight to desktop and launching steam in big picture on startup, but I would much prefer to just have steam OS. I hope we get a consumer release for couch setups :)

@@IceYetiWins The draw of steamOS is that it's made for TVs and would function like a console. Switching to standard linux would just give me the same slightly cumbersome desktop experience but with less game support and more hoops when dealing with compatibility and proton, as far as I'm aware

So as Windows 11 is forced upon us, the gamers can sail into the sunset enjoying a life of peaceful gaming. But us professionals need to buy an entire new computer to do the same exact thing we did before, but with a worse operating system that spies on every pixel of your screen in real time.

you could dual boot still with steam os and windows, it is what people who care about running vr games (which still don't particularly work perfectly in linux even through proton) do

You think Steam doesn't spy on you? They collect data on everything you do
@GSBarlevАй бұрын
@@LuisPerez-5Valve logs what you do in Steam games, nothing else. It's actually a frustration for many that it doesn't log hours played in games you sideload. And if you're in desktop mode with Steam shut down, they should have access to nothing.

Microsoft says Windows 11 wont work on my dual boot Windows 10/Linux Mint PC, so moving to a Steam OS only system looks the way to go. Windows is only a game launcher now anyway.
@paulelderson934Ай бұрын
For someone that only uses their PC to game on: yes. But you could say "Windows is only a spreadsheet launcher anyway" to someone that uses it only for that purpose.

I was recently all on windows for games but switched my gaming laptop to linux mint cinnamon- it worked with everything I wanted including games after getting the latest unix drivers for the GC. I actually have no reason to dual boot at all now. I dont play multiplayer games (at least none that have stringent anti-cheat)
