+Daviljoe193 If it's made in China they don't give a rat's ass. Have you seen the shopping places that sell counterfeit items? They even set up your fake iPhone with the themes that make it look like the real thing at the cash register. Watch Danny Winget's Video showing all the shops selling fake goods and nobody cares they just get pissed when hes filming and tell him in Chinese to shut off the camera, sadly he doesn't speak his own language.

Good review. I ended up buying this camera for my wife's car do to it's smaller size and narrower profile. I also like the mount because I don't have to constantly disconnect cables. I don't always leave the camera in when I drive her car to work. Lots of thieves around in the city I live in. My night footage performed a bit better than yours though. One issue I did have that I'm hoping you can elaborate on is the event clips. Like you said the event sensor is overly sensitive even on low. Like you I ended up turning it off and deleting the clips in the Event folder on my memory card. I came to discover this didn't actually delete them. They were also copied to a hidden folder on the card. I discovered this when I noticed the camera randomly shutting off because the card to was full. I could not delete the event videos in this folder on my computer even when taking admin control of the folder. I had to reformat the card in the camera which deleted everything. Now the camera records fine again. This is only my second dash cam. Is this a problem unique to dash cams, this particular cam, or my memory card which is brand new?

Ive had this camera for a while, it takes 128GB and the 200GB cards just fine since it's the same SDXC format as the 64GB card. Vantrue didn't program an artificial card size limit thankfully. And yes, i did fill up my 128GB card to 100%, the camera didn't "stop working" after 64gb.

Thanks for the video. I truly looked at 30 or more videos and reviews before selecting one. I did get this Vantrue R2 and it works for what I need it to do. Plus I got a really good deal on it as mine came with a 32GB card in the box. Approximately $142 USD shipped free to my house. I don't use the parking monitor just yet but I will when my hard wire kit gets here. Or at least I'll try it out. I wonder if lowering the sensitivity on the G meter will help cut out on all those captures where there is seemingly nothing going on? What I really wanted was one that has two small cameras with the main unit being able to be hid away. I did find one but the price was more than I wanted to pay just now. Maybe later. But if you find one that allows you to integrate the factory back up camera with the main unit, that will still record what the back camera sees and still allow the back up camera to function with the vehicle's factory view screen, make a video on that. Most cars already come with a back up camera today and it would be nice to just splice into that and have dual cameras without adding another camera for the back, that will allow the back up view screen to come on in reverse gear, but still record to the main unit. Was that understandable?? Anyway, thanks so much for all your reviews. Great information!

Good review as always. Would seriously consider this camera if it had a capacitor, but it's just too unimpressive otherwise. Lithium batteries do really bad when the inside of your car experiences temps as low as -40c and probably higher than +60c in a year like where I live. Some 105c rated caps would be nice. I retrofitted one of my dashcams with caps, but the charge/psu circuitry isn't set up for that so it sort of works to replace a totally failed LIPO but isn't great.

The only reason i could think of for the camera to go off is the fluorescent lights flickering. Most probably not at all the reason. I first thought it might be a clock in the room that set it of, but i could not find any in the frame. And that also would be too good to be true. Anyway, good review as always!

The empty recording in the garage was triggered by light flicker, I suppose. Its barely visible with naked eye, but motion sensing from video feed works just by comparing 2 frames.

these things should have some kind of exposure compensation setting. It's rare that I see dashcam videos that are overexposed, even with oncoming headlights at night. Mine takes great video of the sky and clouds at the expense of the road.

So my understanding is that you take your dashcam with you whenever you leave your car. Have you ever considered or maybe seen a way to camouflage a dashcam to make it look like a car freshener or something like that. Also, the camera module itself is usually very small and could fit in a cube 1cm big. Are you aware of any dashcams that have the camera module connected to the rest of the device with a lead so the actual bulky bits could be stored in the glove box for example?

Quite a lot of people are now installing third party Android stereos in their dash. The only problem is that they have no cameras. They do however have USB ports. I wonder if you could do a video on USB dashcam options, where an App like Sygic on the phone (or Android stereo) handles the processing?

yes, since it stores files into separate folder and does not rewrite that space. So, if it triggers that mode on every single speedhump, it would fill up your memory card and it wont be usable

Looks like the motion sensor, in the garage, might've been triggered by the light's flickering (AC power, 50 hz, and all that). The camera is probably too sensitive. You can kind of see the flicker if you look on the right of the recordings.

I look forward to your next video of the other camera. For a car camera I will need GPS and good low light recording, not realy a fan of the bling, or for that matter a built-in led screen (no screen means you can have a much smaller camera body and is harder to see as a result) also a second rear camera as people do silly things behind you like tailgate etc. There are a few cameras like that but not many at all.

At 18:37 when you're talking directly into the camera as opposed to doing your VoiceOver recordings, are you using the microphone built into the camera, or are you using an external microphone? That microphone actually has quite a nice sound to it. Do you do any kind of post processing on the audio such as adding some kind of dynamic range compression or normalisation or some other form of audio processing? I think it has quite a nice punchy sound and it sounds really good to me.

Hi, if you have a moment I have a basic question which doesn't appear to be covered in your videos/blog. I have ordered my first dashcam. it's basic, cheap and without GPS and am wondering what software you suggest for stitching loops together and viewing. I use a Mac, and really want the simplest, given that mine will not do GPS. Thanks in advance. I've posted here as this video seems to be your most recent dashcam review, apologies if I should have asked elsewhere. And as always, thanks for all your excellent (and increasing amusing) videos.

TM, do you happen to know which video editing programs (if any) include a function to auto-detect and blur out reg number plates in video footage? Just thinking that although uploading dashcam clips to YT is quite popular these days, it would be nice to have the option of anonymising the vehicles shown if desired. Obviously not an ability that's relevant if one needs to use a clip as evidence (so I doubt any dashcam would include such a function); I'm thinking purely with respect to YT uploads here. Btw, how do you record connected HDMI output from a cam? ie. what model capture or I/O card do you use? I'm still looking for a decent video capture product. Presumably one can either use a dedicated capture card, or just an I/O device that relies on host CPU/GPU processing to convert the incoming stream. Thanks!!

Maybe what the parking mode does is takes 10 second clips over the course of time looking for motion, if nothing is spotted it shuts down for a few seconds and repeats. Might be worth trying it for 1 hour and see how many clips you get without motion and their length, if a pattern emerges it is most likely how it deals with motion detection.

+googleboughtmee I keep waiting to see one reviewed that is how "I" would design/want one: in the style of a home security DVR system. I want a tiny camera (or maybe a few) that can be discrete and a remote recording device (preferably in a sturdy steel case that can be securely mounted) that can be tucked away that is unlikely to be stolen. I would also want it to record non-stop and be able to accept a pair of SD cards (2x64gb? enough to capture en entire 24 hour day) A home system with 4 cameras is like $200 so I'm not sure why an automotive system like that couldn't exist for even twice that price. Or maybe they do?

+Maxwelhse It sounds like what you're looking for is a 'Mobile DVR' which is a multiple-camera mobile DVR system. I've seen them configured for anywhere between 2 and sixteen channels (cameras) and there are MANY to choose from. You'll find a ton of cheap ones on eBay and other places and you can also get high-quality commercial-grade ones from manufacturers like Rear View Safety. www.rearviewsafety.com/ I confess I'm rather astonished that car manufacturers haven't started building these into cars at the factory yet, as the technology has been around for years and what's going on all around you is going to be a concern of anyone who drives a car. Hoping this helps! :-)

Sadly I was leaving work one day and seen a guy key a car that parked too close to his truck. His truck was backed into the space and the car parked like most others except very close to the line near his truck. The guy with the truck could barely open his door and I seen him pissed off and watched him key the crap out of that car. About a 4' key line. I left a note with my phone number and his license plate incase something could be done to help the car owner. They called and I told them what happened and never heard anything again. A dash cam wouldn't of worked in that case. They shouldn't of parked that close but that doesn't excuse the truck owners actions. I was about 20' away and could hear him ram that key into the paint before I even seen it.

I always notice in many videos you like to muck up and put fingerprints all over the lenses of these dashcams when unboxing them. Always makes me wonder if you bother to clean the lenses before testing them out on the road. But one thing for sure that always makes me facepalm when you do these reviews, is when you review dash or action cameras that come with a lens cap or protection film over the lens. Rather than removing the protector/cap later when you're going to first use the camera, you choose to remove them immediately during unboxing then proceed to touch and muck up the lens with finger prints.

+Raven S (Hidden) I clean lenses with a microfibre *lens cloth* before any recording take place. I'm *utterly astounded* that you think I wouldn't be doing this. Its as likely as me not knowing that I need to insert a memory card in my camera if I want to record video.

+Techmoan I figured you'd clean the lenses of course otherwise they would be really blurry. However it's just always one of those little quirks/irks that make me have a laugh or an OCD moment, when you go about just being all over those lenses with your fingers, especially those which had a protector/cap prior :D!

+Maxwelhse Try not to leave the dash cameras in hot, cold or damp environments and you should be fine. Not much to it. If it's 70 degrees outside it can be 115 degrees inside the car after 1 hour. At 80 degrees it can be 125 degrees and at 95 degrees outside temp it can reach 140 degrees inside. My 801 dash cams lasted 18 months before they died. I assumed it was temperature related. I left them in the car year round. Max temp about 100 degrees and lowest temp -20 degrees.

The problem with this product is that those suction thingys often wear out every couple of years (especially where summers are hot) and have to be replaced, so putting wiring in the suction thingy renders the product a lifespan of about 2 years before it'll have to be replaced. I have a cheap Russian dashcam (with instructions written in Chinese, wtf?) and I just replace the suction thingy every year or so when it loses suction.

Oh, at 9:35 you're driving way too fast, Mario! I felt like I was watching one of those Russian crash videos, bleh.

Can you tell me what Techmoan means? Ist it just a combination of both words or is there a pun involved that i don't get as a non-native speaker?

+Sampler19 I don't see a big pun there, but "moan" might be a little joke on complaining about tech when it doesn't work quite right.

Isn't parking mode keeps recording but captures and saves motion sensed in event folder? Therefore that event is saved safely? I have to test this

What's your favorite dash cam under £100? Or is it not worth looking for one at that price?

Are there any truly discreet dashcams out there for under 100 quid? Im thinking ones with extremely small bullet lenses and seperate recording units hidden away in the car, something where if you forgot to take it out of the car you wouldnt be worrying about some scrote breaking in and knicking it.

+Magoo Magoon I keep looking for one...haven't found anything yet. Your best bet is a Mobius camera.

+Techmoan Thanks for the reply, will look into that one! A cam that was pretty much hidden would be ideal. The car isn't worth much, and if someone did break in for the cam it would probably cost more in damage and insurance hikes than it was worth. I've subscribed to you, no doubt if one's released you'll have a review soon after. Keep up the good work :-)

do you know of any dash cams that record whilst engine ignition off? you mentioned this has battery back up so is that what it is for. Cheers. good vid. :)
@JensStragier
@JensStragier 8 жыл бұрын
+MarcusMusique The battery backup is usually just to keep it running just a few moments after you disconnect it / turn the engine off. You could run it from a powerbank and keep that one charged when the ignition is on.

+MarcusMusique If you need it to record all the time, just use an action cam or wire the camera to constant power. The built in battery won't last for very long.

Why don't dashcam companies realise that dash cameras need to be AS DISCREET AS POSSIBLE! Don't bling them up with chrome! It just beggars belief that someone in these companies sit in a meeting and go, "yes put lots of chrome on the front to make them look expensive, shiny and attract everyone's attention" I mean come on, really???
