@dan_loup7 жыл бұрын
Just to randomly add details, that freesync thing described on the specs is a capability your display have of allowing games to control the refresh rate when using an AMD videocard. This make the motion smoother because the game will always deliver the frames in a consistent basis, even if the frame rate varies. On non freesync/gsync screens, the game needs to repeat frames and they don't exactly do it in a very clean way.

At least for me, The HD4000 that I have with my i5 does not support outputting to 4k @ 60 hertz. He pointed out the same for his HD Iris - The internal gpu cannot output the needed refresh rate at these resolutions. Thus, a 2k monitor is still a big upgrade, as long as you're running it at native resolution (compared to some crappy 1336x768 laptops (like mine) )

I played around with monitors and MacBooks for work and can tell you something. The limitations apple tells you are for HDMI. If you use the thunderbolt ports as mini display port, all MacBooks support 4k at 60hz, i tested it even with an 11 inch MacBook air. Since you macbook pro uses discreet graphics, it should run fine.
@martyp21387 жыл бұрын
Was going to say this. TB2 > Display Port will do 4k @ 60Hz.
@kaitlyn__L7 жыл бұрын
yeah, i was thinking how the internal screen on that macbook pro is closer to 4K anyway, since that's clearly a "retina" model. (i don't know the exact resolution of the internal screen, mind) trying to run two at once in extend-o-mode would possibly get a bit laggy, but using it docked in single-screen mode like that should definitely not have been a problem. of course, whether he would get any benefit from the extra pixels is questionable given the distance he's sitting from it, and his failing eyesight comment. my eyesight's pretty good and i can't really see the pixels in 1080p at 2 or 3 feet away. mine's a 24" monitor but i imagine the 29" ultrawide is a similar height as my 24" 16:9 one.
@GraveUypo7 жыл бұрын
it's actually almost exactly the same height. my 34" is also almost exactly the same height as a 27" screen. the pixel density is the same. on both. anyway, larger screen means you can push it further away from your eyes, which means less eye strain. try using a screen from about 1 meter or more away for a couple of weeks and then push it back to the usual 50~60cm. it literally hurts your eyes to focus in such a close distance for long.
@martyp21387 жыл бұрын
The internal screen is native 2880x1800 however, most resolutions are scaled which actually puts more demand on the GPU but doesn't really impact the use on the desktop. The GT750m is more than capable than 4k scaled down (to become legible unless you have a 40" display) and run the internal screen at the same time. I wish Apple made displays again, the 30" monitor was my workhorse for years, 16:10 is the best aspect ration imo. My replacement 32" 4k monitor blows it out of the water on all other points though.

I also have that one but with different stand. After roughly two years of using, I must say it was a great decision to buy it. I can comfortably use four windows at a time and play games with very wide field of view. You may have noticed that many music videos and series are shot in 21:9 ratio, so they fill the screen entirely (although sometimes I have to use Ultrawide Video plugin for Chrome to crop black stripes). Also the speakers are pretty decent for me. Got if for PLN1200, which is approx. GBP250. I think this is not much for the great experience :D

About the 4k monitors, you wouldn't use HDMI. You would use DisplayPort (adapted from your miniDP/Thunderbolt 2) monitor, which would support 4k properly at 60Hz.
@vetirtal11687 жыл бұрын
I think the hdmi for his laptop would only support 4k at 30Hz? Looking forward to hdmi 2.1 which even allows 10k at 120Hz.
@andybuddy7 жыл бұрын
Adapting the DisplayPort to HDMI is what limits your resolution. Even DisplayPort 1.2, which is supported over the ThunderBolt 2/miniDP port, can support 4k60 properly. He even bought the proper cable for it when plugging in the dock.
@WednesdayMan7 жыл бұрын
um yes you would use HDMI yet again Display port with the mac he uses would run 4k natively I assume
@flandrble7 жыл бұрын
it's probably missing hdcp2.2, also the gtx 750 just doesn't do hdmi 2.0 (4k60)
@andybuddy7 жыл бұрын
What do you need HDCP for if you're not watching 4k media? He's editing the content. And HDMI version has nothing to do with the DisplayPort version (1.2, which does support 4k60). While it might require an MST monitor, it's a single setting that allows his laptop (and any Macbook Pro newer than 2013) to be able to output 4k60. Apple's documentation is linked below. support.apple.com/en-us/HT206587

As a dyed-in-the-wool retro audio fan, a couple of suggestions. 1: I use High Quality VCR tapes (usually TDK EHG HiFi) to record several music albums on one tape. A 180 minute tape gives 3 hours of music, and sounds great to me. I have two 6 head Sony SLV-EZ745 HiFi decks, one for each of my systems. 2: One of my systems has only two tape loop inputs, and to fully utilize three record/play devices I have found on eBay a Sony Tapecorder Selector SB-300. This allows me to combine three Play/Record devices into one input using button selectors. I believe it also enables copying tape to tape. A lovely unit that works perfectly and lets me combine a VCR, Cassette Deck and Minidisc recorder into one Amp Tape input. Sony also made a larger SB-500 unit that handles more devices. You and The 8 Bit Guy are my favourites. Scouse accent?

Keep an eye on the temperatures when you dock your mac-book. My overheated when docked, and the motherboard died. (though that was a 2011 model. The airflow might be better on newer models)
@x-iso7 жыл бұрын
actually, this kind of dock is more like a death trap, especially when intended to use with large monitor and utilize CPU and GPU at maximum performance. The Macbook itself have a bit poorly designed ventilation, and using this kind of dock station just outright blocks most of the airflow. Techmoan, take note please, or we won't see new videos for a while!
@kaitlyn__L7 жыл бұрын
i've noticed the models with smaller screens can sometimes have their vents obstructed by docks/stands. his one looks on the larger side though, and should probably be ok. overheating is possibly indicative of a more serious problem, though,. processors have dynamically underclocked themselves when they get too hot for many many years now. they can usually go as low as ~800MHz if need be (half the cycles = half the heat, sort of). your computer should just shut itself off if that's not enough, rather than destroying itself. (of course if it was out of warranty when this happened, it doesn't really matter where the failure lay.) i've had my laptop turn itself off on a 30ºc summer day after rendering a video, once. wouldn't turn back on for about 6 hours, but once it was cooled off enough, it was totally fine. that happened about 4 years ago, and i've been using it every day since :)
@x-iso7 жыл бұрын
if the airflow is severely blocked both by closing the lid and covering a portion of the whole laptop with a dock case, it's going to heat up much faster, even with throttling. and if the point was to use it for CPU/GPU intensive tasks, then you don't want it to underclock. as for safety mechanisms, it might not work if it heats up rapidly under high load, with no way to dissipate the heat. I've 'burned' the gpu once on my old laptop, by accidentally loading extremely heavy 3D project with real-time rendering, and it just died at trying to process it. it was work related, normally intended for use on workstation PC, but I was also able to export 'lighter' versions of the projects for laptop editing, without enormous uncompressed textures and other heavy stuff (obviously that time I forgot to load the right version). it's worth noting that gpu was a bit overclocked, so it might have not corrected the clock rate under the load and high temperature, while CPU did. but I also had a moment with same laptop when the fan decided to fail, the system properly responded and turned off, with no damage being done.
@tschuuuls4867 жыл бұрын
2011 MBP owner here. The gpu also dies without ever using a dock. Those macbooks don't pull air in though the keyboard, so closing the top and using it like this is a supported mode.

Another huge productivity boost if you edit text / code is running a 16:9 or 16:10 monitor vertically. I've been running a two monitor setup with one 1440p vertical and a 1080p horizontal and the difference is amazing. Very much like editing video or audio where the timeline is horizontal, with text its vertical, and the amount you can get on screen on 1440p vertical is just superb.

I have this monitor. Overall very happy with it. A few notes: 1) You didn't mention the monitor's ability to do split screen with multiple inputs at once. 2) The speakers only work with HDMI input as Display Port does not transmit audio and there is no other audio input into the monitor. 3) Full resolution at 75Hz is only supported on Display Port, and even then can take a little fiddling with drivers to get working correctly. 4) I do use this monitor for gaming, and it is great, especially for games where you are in any sort of cockpit (racing games, flight sims, tank or flight combat games, etc.) 5) When I first went from 16:9 to 21:9 I did regret not going for a curved screen. That wide on a flat screen can cause some eye strain trying to focus on the edges of the screen and teh center at the same time unless you are sitting several feet from your screen. I have adjusted to it with some time and it bothers me a lot less now.

circular radar screens with their dual-phosphor displays... i love how long the secondary-phosphor stays lit for. i know using one for a modern computer would be a fairly ludicrous idea if i didn't just want to use it in basic text/graphics mode like older computers (think PDP-10 etc), but part of me still wants to see someone try.

I've had this monitor about 6 months or so now. I love it. Used to have x2 22 inch monitors, but one died... then a year or so later then other was on it's way out too and opted to get an Ultrawide.

I am always curious about why your channel is called tech moan. Are you unhappy with technology or is there some hidden British English meaning behind this? Anyhow, you might consider making some sort of video related to solar eclipses since that is coming up in a month. Cheers and best wishes!

As someone who owns one of these monitors, I love it. I recommend it for anyone who wants a bigger monitor but doesn't want 1440p or 4k just yet. Its a good price too.

I do exactly have this. I do like the fact that there is no gap, like there is with a two monitor solution.

Your monitor seems to be in interlaced mode tho, just pause the footage whenever you're scrolling somewhere and you'll see what I mean.

When a monitor is interlaced, you'll see a pattern shifting a bit horizontally. It's usually not vertical, therefore, the cause might be the camera.

If you're interested in space saving a wall or bench mounted monitor arm saves a fair bit of desk space as you can abandon your stand, gives you good height adjustability too.

One thing some people often don't get is: 29" for Ultrawide is a 24" 'stretched out'. A 27" 16:9 monitor actually has more screen real estate - just in the 'classical' 16:9 format. While 21:9 is a pretty neat format, I still prefer 16:9 for my PC screens. My 27" 1440p 144Hz panel easily allows me to have 2 windows side by side as well, and I also have 2 24" 1080p panels on each side backing it up for information display. 21:9 is the go-to if you're mostly looking for productivity and only want to have one screen - I prefer at least 2 screens, so 16:9 is perfect for me.

I love these LG Ultrawide monitors, I bought a LG 25UM58 (the 25 inch model) and use it in conjunction with a vertically oriented widescreen monitor (which technically is 9:16 due to orientation) and absolutely adore the screen space. I have them mounted above my desk through a generic mounting arm, and my only complaint with this monitor series is the curved glossy back makes it difficult to mount in a strong manner. I worry about scratching it up and it took some careful finessing to get it right

I went through a similar process last fall... I wanted a screen larger than 24" but the pixels on a 28" 1080p screen are easily visible... I ended up buying an LG 4K screen and a video card to drive the bugger. I will say I'm still very impressed with the LG monitor, it was probably the cheapest 4K screen but it looks amazing..
@GraveUypo7 жыл бұрын
i own the 34" version of that screen. at first i was a ultrawide skeptic. but i still dove in. and i don't regret it. this screen does a decent refresh rate (75hz when paired with ATI, although i overclock mine to 80hz), freesync, decent resolution and really, really good size, a very good panel (viewing angles, color, contrast, all that shit) at a really cheap price. the best "budget" monitor you could get. good pick.
@zuryan7 жыл бұрын
10:15 that screen sits rather low on the table compared to where your eyes are. you may not see it as a problem but it's really nice to look straight at a screen instead of looking down.just keep in mind that this could be bad for your back, especially if you work a lot with that setup.

I do need to correct you on the Philips TV matter. I own the latest 21:9 tv Philips made, the 58PFL9956. And I love it! In fact I also had the smaller model, the 42 inch variant, but this large one came along and I bought it. It really is so much better then these new tv’s. The 21:9 ratio also works perfectly with normal tv shows. The tv resizes the image automaticly to make it fit full screen. And no, people do not get weird wide heads. The image looks normal, but is wider then a normal tv, so it works pretty good with f1 races for instance. And movies do not have to be shot in 21:9. Normal movies are also adjusted to the screen, so you loose the black bars down and up. It really it such a great tv.

Upgraded my hardware too this week, AMD Ryzen 7 1700x, tad expensive but hell does it export videos a lot quicker. Adobe really utilises it properly, an argument often given by intel or mac users (claiming theirs is way better for whatever reason, what does it matter) it exports videos a lot quicker and scrubbing through the video is a breeze. I wouldn't ever want to go without dual monitors again, it truly does increase your workflow by a lot. Don't overwork yourself on making videos Mat, it happened to LGR, would hate to see you getting tired of making videos. Cheers.
