A look at eightban. Collectable, playable mini records from 2004. A deliberately, unashamedly low-fi format.

*****CORRECTION*****
Yes the blue tape is Masking Tape not Gaffers Tape. What an amazing gaff - it's probably going to be on a compilation of the most unbelievable mistakes ever made in an improvised youtube voice-over. Perhaps I should start writing scripts and fact checking them, but no... that's not my style....I'm going to keep freestyling straight from the top of the dome, spitting lyrics straight from my bald patch. Sometimes they're right, sometimes they're wrong...but they are always funky fresh. I'm out of here like last year.

Super cool. I'm really surprised that this was made during such a modern time for music formats. 2004? I mean I can understand if this came out in the 70s or something, but this is nuts. @MarkyShaw
@MarkyShaw 6 жыл бұрын
Considering he unboxed a toy, yes it's obvious that it's not a serious music format, nor was I implying that. Other toy companies released other toy-style formats that were similar to their "adult" counterparts but they were released at times that were at least much closer to the peak-time of the format, if not just shortly after their decline of popularity. It seems unusual and surprising to me that this came out so many years after vinyl declined in popularity, yet so many years before the resurgence.

Those colored records are meant to be replicas of Asahi Sonorama discs put out during the 60's and 70's. They were basically plastic flexi-discs from the looks of it. The added pictures/descriptions are actually storybooks that went along with the record sheets. Wikipedia has a good entry on them.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asahi_Sonorama

Maybe Maxx Fordham is not native English speaker, or you are perhaps not one, I don't know, but all words he listed above I have heard. A well you could take in account that in different countries English is bit different, just look on American and British English. I, it is rebellion of some kind, use British English (well my other browser, not this one I am typing this) as default in my browser, and last week i was getting errors with word "fueled", it does not exist in British English, but is commonly used in American English. So some versions of English might allow vinyls, in fact spellcheck knows this word for both, American and British, it might be that use of this form is just rare in your country, or in English that you have learned in school. In fact I have met group of Americans (I should say citizens of U.S.A.) few months ago and we had some problems with some words as I learned British English at school, well they had problem as I am used to hear both.

I have one of the White Stripes models (and the records). They released one record for this ("Top Special") that, to date, has only ever been released in this format. I ripped the Top Special record to WAV format by using placing the tonearm of a real turntable on top of the Top Special record that was spinning on the 8Ban turntable. (This worked better than you'd expect and I managed to get the angle of the tonearm correct). Yes, it was in Stereo, and yes, the quality is what you'd expect for such a tiny plastic record. Someone else did the same and posted a video to youtube.

If it's a 33, and actually stereo, might even be they used some sort of clever shrinking ray on real records. Or something. I bet the sound quality is purely a symptom of a novelty plastic toy record player, and the bit of tape Techmoan didn't quite hack up properly in his Crosley. Probably if you made the effort you'd get at least LP quality out of it. Why not? Putting grooves into vinyl is a mature technology, we've mastered it.

Back in the 1970s, the Audubon Society released a tiny record player about the size of a VHS tape. It had records the size of CD mini discs that were glued to a card with a corresponding picture of a bird on it. When you slid the card into the device and flipped it on, it would play a short 30 second clip of the bird's name and the call that it made. It was pretty awesome to be honest. my grandmother had one and gave it to me when I was just a kid in the late 1980s, and I love the thing.

Losing Weight, Ripping Vinyl Yea, and with that cartridge you could pound on the turntable with your fists while they're playing, and it will still track fine and not come through the speakers either. Like I saw in another video (it was actually a fellow AudioKarma member too funny). I guess it would be cool to show off if you have guests over that are into audio. I'd certainly get a kick out of it. But I'm a total geek. So you can't go by my taste. LOL Please post a video if you do get this working. And post the link to it here. I would like to see it.

There must be an end to the supply of oddball audio formats, but you continue to amaze us with unexpected new revelations. There's one in pink and black on ebay... ebay.to/2CfB8Q0 apparently there was a range. Techmoan: I absolutely love your videos! I wish I could say the same for a huge percentage of other KZbin channels. What I mean by that is it seems to me the easy majority of top KZbin channels content has to do with subject matter that tends to dumb its viewers down. It’s the same crappy reality TV but on the internet. But here at Techmoan I always learn something new. And even if it is frivolous new information, at least I learned something new! And that is absolutely refreshing when so much of KZbin is clickbait anymore or just the same ole reality TV, but on the internet. Thank you for being a breath of fresh air in an increasingly stale KZbin universe.
