Technician Tool Cases: Unboxing a New One & Exploring an Old One

This week we'll do an unboxing of a new Knipex technician tool case I picked up. A sneak preview of an eventual review that I will do on it.
I also included a look at one of my older technician tool cases that I used many years ago. Haven't opened it up in years, so let's see what's inside.

The push-in wire connectors are reusable too. Hold the wire with the left hand, grab the connector with the right hand. Make rotating movements with the right hand and try to pull the wire out of the connector. The wire should not rotate with the connector, so you'll have to hold it. You can also twist the wire and hold the connector instead. The push- in can only be used with solid wires. The 221 Wago can be used with solid, stranded and fine-stranded conductors.

I picked up a genuine pelican case on ebay a while back and customised the insides to fit my needs. For hand tools the 1520 is a good size imo. I also have a smaller one to store my machine tooling (carbide mills, drill, reamers, ...) since I need to transport those every once in a while. Having paid about 1/4 resale price I'm very happy with them.

My SouthWire Circuit Breaker Finder works every time, have never had a problem with it.

I'm using my GT-Line Rock Turtle. It's a heavy case, but you can put almost everything inside and go to the field without any problems. As i know B&W also make the Geodre tool case.

Those rebranded Husky Technician Cases were nice when they first came out: $20. Price went up (way up) and the weakness of the design crept out: poor clasp closures. I have a few, mainly for IFAK/Trauma Kit/Supply Storage.

The wire stripper from 8:47 on IMHO is for Teflon coated wire. The harder gripping action just meets the the slippiness of Teflon.

I use a Pelican 1560 case with some appropriate inserts and pockets inside. The main advantage is it has wheels, nameplate and lifetime guarantee. It is yellow so it is easy to find on a conveyor belt at the airport plus it won't break. As for your old tool case, I think only the larger scissor would be something I would keep. The rest looked like crap from China.

For me this stuff doesn't work. TSA and baggage handlers treat these things horribly and everything ends up getting dumped out. I roll with a husky roller bag filled with colored zipper bags. My tools are still organized when I get to the customer.

Not expecting a reply to this since you stopped uploading to the channel but I'd like to know the depth of the bottom compartment where the aluminium rails go. trying to work out if I can fit a cordless drill in there before buying. Agree that the case is B&W, Wiha also sell cases and kits with this and a larger wheeled version. Hope you're doing well and we will see new videos someday, easily the best tool channel on the internet. Your format has been copied over and over in the past year or two but none come close to yours.

It's only about 3-4 inches high I would guess, cutting it close for a drill. I hope to start doing some videos again sometime. I have some restoration projects to finish up. I've been giving away a lot of my tools so I might need to start buying again soon.

Do you have any idea who makes the soft Knipex tool bags? I really like the way a couple are designed but the price is outrageous, I could buy Veto and have money left over. Makita has some nice soft bags too, those seem to be available in Europe, Australia and (Obviously) Japan.

7:34 does pliers where sold as a kit or individually by Sears and they were really good not craftsman do.

Have you ever seen the wagos fail? Burn up or melt? A lot of people at my work don’t trust them. I don’t see what’s wrong with them if they are rated for the work.

I have never seen them fail. I have seen twist wire nuts fail / come loose but that is probably because they weren't installed correctly. They are only rated to 20 amps though.

Look up the most boring KZbinr named John Ward. He has made some extensive testing of those connectors not long ago. I’d use those without any concerns after seeing his video. But watching paint dry is more entertaining then JW.

That's a sad collection. Volume to Eigenweight-ratio seems to be bad on the second old case, just from the looks of wasteful thick walls.

It's for removing insulation from copper wire for recycling/scraping.

The whole common tool box with people not putting tools back is the exact reason why we tool snobs are the way we are when someone ask's to borrow a tool. I have cheap cheap stuff for loaning which you should do with this box. I have a pair of brand new steelman mini long handle plier set and one of them has a BB sized hole rusted on the jaws that came out of the package like that, I'll have to take some pictures and email them to you for a laugh.

Yoda Doug Tool snobs haha. Nothing to be ashamed of at all. I have invested several thousands in top quality tools and have no intention to lend anything to anybody. The best way to lose tools is to lend them out. No way.

I have been and do get asked for basic hand tools, screw driver, pliers, hammer, you get the idea. So what I did when I was asked what I just did it for them so then they got the idea they can ask me for w/e but I had covered myself and dug out some hencho en china stuff to have on hand =p
