I had a pair - absolutely an underrated speaker. When CD's first came out in the early 80's....When cuing up Telarc's 1812 Overture - recorded with Digital ground breaking technology mics - the technics would just shine with each cannon blast. Good Stuff!

I have been reading about some of the better technics speakers. Many of them are very rare. I wish you could make a video with these playing. I see these under the radar all the time, but how do they sound?

I have the MCS 8320's which were the J.C. Penny brand. However, these were made by Technics for J.C. Penny. They are the exact same speaker except the tweeter is not a horn but paper. It still sounds spectacular. I had to tone them down to the -3 position for my taste. I picked these up at our local Habitat for Humanity Re Store for $10. They are in MINT condition as well. I was skeptical when buying them but at $10 I figured I could sell em for at least that much and get my money back if they weren't good. Fired em up with my DBX BX-3 amp and wow! I was blown away. Not because they are top notch or anything, I have many speakers that are much better than these but I was surprised because the sound is very well balanced and accurate. I cleaned them up and I think I may actually keep these ones, for awhile at least lol. Technics did a good job with these.

The Technics Linear Phase speakers were very good sounding speakers. They had quite a bit of bounce and strong depth, especially in the bass. I once had four of these but I sold them to make room for other equipment.

Ahh, a pair of SB-L200! These are from the same era as my SB-4500 which I once had. The honeycomb system was not a failure at all technically; only marketingwise. I happen to have a pair of SB-10, which were the best honeycomb speakers ever made (besides the SB-M series), and they are just amazing. They outperform the SB-4500 by far (which are similar to the SB-L200 btw), and they are a real honeycomb system.

The Technics with Honeycomb speakers that I owned sounded swell but I kept blowing out the woofers, even though I`m not a particularly loud music fan. I managed to find a couple of spares on eBay and they packed it in too. So I just gave up on them. Thanks for watching!

The Honeycomb disc speakers were not a failed experiment.I have a pair of SB-M3 HD monitor speskers with 13" woofers made of real wood and weigh 69 pds. They cost $1800 when new.From Technics pro line of equipment.
@bluenazz9 жыл бұрын
I consider the honeycomb speakers to be failed because they I think that the experiment was abandoned. That's not to say they were not good though.

Interesting speakers. You mentioned "honeycomb" speakers, I think Mitsubishi Corp. was the first to market them. Some ideas just don't work. Think the word is "gimmick". Several speaker companies had them, Mirror image, minimum diffraction, staggered drivers and of course Technic's Linear Phase design philosophy. The point is to align the voice coils vertically, hence the staggered drivers. In Technic's case it worked and very well too. It has good imaging and can play loudly without distortion. The only problem is a forwardness to the sound. Not acceptable for me as I'm an analytical listener. Hey they sold lots of them so somebody must have liked them. The SBL- 100 sold for $150, the SBL- 300 for $250 so the 200's were in between. My information is from The Complete Buyer's Guide To Stereo/ HiFi Equipment-Speakers (1980). Still have that issue. Hope this was useful info.

Thank you very much for that info! I had some of the Technics honeycomb speakers and didn't care much for them. I assume that they were a failed experiment as they were discontinued. These Technics speakers did sound very nice but I have other speakers that I like better. JBL L100's and some newer Paradigm's and PSB's. Your info was useful!!
