A great shape Technics SU-V9 to add to my collection. It is one of the best sounding amps I own now, and it has dethroned my Luxman LV103 as my studio amp. This thing has balls, and is unbelievably clean.

Just today I turned mine on to test it for sale, and the exact same problem! I did not pay attention to that flat black cable that was moving the switch in the rear. Sprayed it with Caig Fader Lube, viola FIXED! Thanks for the video! And yes it is a very powerful amp that my cousin was a one owner of till he passed, it is a great sounding, heavy piece from 1981.

dave, I wanted to thank you for your video because after reading it I looked for and found a technics su v9 in Germany that I received a few weeks ago. I must say that I already had amps of great renown and the technics made everyone agree. the sound is pure and detailed whether at low or high volume, the music scene is incredible. I plugged it into my jbl l112 and the result is amazing. really thank you because the value for money is just perfect.

@retrogamer33

I always wondered what New Class A meant. I know now.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 4 жыл бұрын
A real class A is single ended. Class B Push pull. The problem with class B is cross over distortion when switching from 1 transistor to the other. Class AB adds a slight bias to keep the transistors idling so at no signal both the transistors are in very slight conduction. The non active transistor does go off completely when there is a signal present but it also comes back on before the other one goes into cutoff. This is how most amps are biased. A true class B has high distortion. New class A is still a push pull, they just drive plenty of bias to both transistors soothe transistors are in full conduction and passing a fair bit of current even when there is no sound. Right through the max power limit of the class A bias limit, both transistors stay in conduction. This is very power inefficient and these units will draw a fair bit of power even when producing no or very little sound. I believe the bias drops down with volume to save power but at the max level for class A operation the transistors are wasting much power as heat. Once the power level goes beyond the limit for class A operation the bias drops to the AB bias level. This happens instantly. So these units uses for background music will spend the vast majority of their time in the power hungry class A mode but the distortion is almost immeasurable. Will be interesting to see how this compares to my old luxman hybrid.

@@12voltvids outstanding explanation- thankyou. I used to have a marantz pm6200, beautiful amp. Had a class A mode switch which gave 30w class A sound. Normal mode was class AB which was much more powerful, i enjoyed class A on for intricate music, sitting in the dark. Was stunning. Funny how music comes to life when its pitch black! I gave the amp to my folks few years back and they barely use it! I use a NAD c352 these days. Superb amp. And of course i changed out the fail prone crappy caps with decent ones!!
@pliedtka
@pliedtka 4 жыл бұрын
So Dave this is sort of like a sliding bias, for low level amp operating in very overbiased class AB. Many DIY people commonly set bias at way over 50mA per pair. As for the tone controls, I learned to live without if spkrs have good crossovers and are well voiced, but I would use some boost below 50Hz. Can I have the Luxman 😉

👍🏻😎 I have a Technics SA-1010 that has the same rated output 125 WPC @ 8 Ohms it also has that huge power supply and it's 600 watts at the plug. Mine has selectable voltage on the back so I suspect it was a non-U.S. model because the ones that they sold here in the States didn't have the selectable voltage. It is a beast and is underrated by a good amount. I'm pretty sure it will do 150-160 WPC easy. It's in perfect condition and still works fine as far as I can tell. It's the pride of my collection too.

So, I pulled out my SU V9 from 10 years in storage. I didn’t test if there was any sound cut out / static sound. However, I decided to De Oxit as show in the video. Very easy to access all switches and potentiometers, with exception of the balance one that has no easy access because it sits in the middle of transformer chassis. So, after everything is put back together, I connected a pair of Bose bookshelf speakers and Nad CD player. Oh boy, I forgot how good of the sounds this integrated amplifier makes. I can hear much of sound details even at low volume. Someone mentioned at comments here that the sound is dull. I actually think is quite warm even when bypassing the pre amp controls. Using pre amp controls are actually quite discrete and by personal choice, I like this way. I just put an order for a pair of Klipsch RP 600M. I think this will be a good set up.

I do not install "free" readers or any other add on apps to view something. If a clear pdf is not available I move on. The reason for this is because spyware and viruses lurk in these free reader or helper applications. I have enough pop ups from google, which I allow because I am a partner and I make money when ads run on my videos and I feel it is fair to allow others to make money if I watch their content. So for that reason I do not block Google's ads, but I won't install and 3re party helper apps and I also don't but into the so called ad blockers. I did many many years ago. I paid for a commercial spyware and ad blocker and felt pretty good that I was safe from spyware as i was using a commercial, not ad supported free version. Then i got a physical letter in the mail from the federal trade commission informing me that the company I had dealt with had been ordered shut down by the FTC for all kinds of fraud and illegal activity. While their software was telling you that the sky was blue and grass green and everything was rosy on the computer they were infact data mining all kinds of info, masquerading as the good guys. (Read up on spy killer). So excuse me if I don't trust anyone or anything in the cyber world. Once bitten.....

@@12voltvids IDK how on earth going to alldatasheets dot com and downloading a PDF from there (like a lot of people... probably also Louis Rossmann too) causes viruses and "ultra-extreme-pro-edition"-ware to magically install.... but then again, I only use my blandroid phone as a dumb-phone, don't use a FRiPhone and use Debian Wheezy distro patched up to the hilts with libraries cross-compiled on one distro and made to work with this one on a Lenovo T400... and yes, I do security patches by manual checking of CVE advisories... there's probably tonnes of holes and not yet have I got a virus... also even though I made no mention to adblockers... I may as well mention now the topic is up... I use Adblock Latitude only when logged in and disabled for most sites of my liking when logged out... else google's youtube has a habit of putting up some confusing advert choices that are meant to be relevant to I but not being relevant at all... Like how does lipstick help a guy like myself solder? Maybe advertise soldering stations instead google? Also the adblocker Latitude one I managed to bodge into working on my Palemoon web browser (Firefox clone... because failfox is one way to sometimes get spied on... they've been caught out a few times... so ya know)... the adblocker doesn't force up adverts... though cant block all adverts (The ones that use less common scripting... I can use NoScript for that instead if I have to).... Also I'm aware of the possibility the adblocker may try to filtrate data out... since Wireshark shows no odd activity loading google.com with adblock latitude on vs off... it seems clean... Then again, if I need actual anonymity, I'd use the tor browser and hitch off a random hotspot (We have BT-WiFi hotspots here and many people openly share their logins with friends they trust, sometimes going a bit further a field. Then there's generic hotspotting, even though I'm aware of MITM attacks, they're a little difficult when the hotspot has to circumvent app-to-server encryption.)

I remember hearing Panasonic, Pioneer and Techincs are all Panasonic brands. Ah interesting sounds like it wants to work. By the way I still have a slightly faulty Denon CD Recorder I think I’ve figured out how to fix the CD Recorder drive as it’s currently stuck. As I tried it in my Marantz CD Recorder but failed as I found it was too big, so I bought one from Instrumental Parts in the US. As I live in the UK but could get one from here. Anyway I fixed my portable one and it’s fully functional now. The problem with the Denon was I couldn’t find the switch and having looked at videos I thought ah maybe it’s there!! So I will try again soon then re eBay sell it. It’s perfect apart from slightly dented as I reckon someone accidentally dropped it probably.

But if my belt driven Nak will misbehave after I change the capstan motor and belt, I might be looking for serious DD 3header (no Permaloy heads). The best Technics deck I heard was top of the line 965 (or something like that) with Amorphous heads sold in Europe (Germany). I was teenager back then. Very nice machine with DD and bias, tape sensivity level adj. with test tone generator. Damn expensive, same price as top AKAI, Aiwa, Sony, TEAC, JVC, etc.

This must be amplifier week, I have a kenwood KT5500 that I have had for about a year, and it powers on and the speaker relay protect seems to be working, but there is no out put, I checked for voltage at the output transistors and there is power there but no audio, at least I have a service manual for it, but doesn’t mean I’m going to get it working, I guess that’s going to be my next winter project, that’s what I get for buying something like this off of EBay, you talk about undisclosed items, but of course I new I was takeing a big chance buying from EBay , but if your in the market for a certain amplifier or other piece of equipment, and you just can’t find it any were, that’s the way it go’s. From what it looks like no one has ever disturbed anything, other than it’s obvious that they’ve had the cover off of it because one of the speaker terminals was striped out, what an idiot who ever did that, I think they were going to try to fix it and they were not successful, well that’s about the end of my amplifier episode for this week, maybe I will get it going and maybe I won’t, time will tell.

I do love these early eighties Technics amps. However, my first "serious" amp was an SU-V5 my dad gave to me many moons ago. I used to love Technics as a youngster so I bought an SLPG 590 and ST GT 350 to go with it as my first proper system. Anyway at the time I found a cheap Trio Kenwood KA 3700 and hooked that up to compare with the Technics. The Trio sounded so much sweeter, and made the V5 sound terribly dull. I'm not sure if this was the typical Technics sound signature for gear of this era? Anyway I didn't gel with it. I don't think the V5 was cheap in it's day either!

Hi Dave, I have just picked up one of these lovely amps myself. I have heard that this amp has quite high power consumption and that it has a large in'- rush current on power up. Do you know if it is normal for the mains switch to pop a little bit when you switch it on, or is it more a case of cleaning a dirty switch? This is a great informative video, by the way👍🙂
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 9 ай бұрын
There will be inrush at power up and yes it is relatively high in power consumption as it is a heavy biased amplifier. It's a push pull class a that switches to ab at higher power levels. At power levels under 9 watts it operates lime a single end. Both transistors are conducting throughout the entire waveform so even at no output there is a fair bit of heat produced this power consumed.

That's not a power amp, it's an integrated amp. Fairly common for solder joints and switches going intermittent. They always used non glass epoxy boards except with some of the higher-end stuff. My Stax SRM mark II headphone amp is well build and uses glass epoxy. A more expensive Stax headphone amp, that I returned, did not. My Nakamichi CR1 (I think) dual capstan 3head cassette deck, pricey, no glass epoxy. Stax and Nakamichi are now owned by the Chinese.
