I AM 71 YEARS OLD AND MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY 4 yrs and 5 mos. AGO. WE NEARLY MADE IT TO OUR 49 th. ANNIVERSARY. I HAVE BEEN JUST TOTALLY DISINTERESTED IN ANYTHING. SO FINALLY I DECIDED TO TRY MY HAND AT DRAWING & PAINTING AGAIN, I WAS ALWAYS FAIRLY GOOD IN ART. HOWEVER A LOT HAS CHANGED SINCE I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, PRODUCTS SUCH AS PAPER/PENCILS, ETC.. I DID LEARN SOME THINGS WHILE I WATCHED YOUR VIDEO TODAY, BECAUSE TRYING TO USE COLORED PENCILS HAS ABOUT STRESSED ME OUT TRYING TO GET THEM TO BLEND. THANK YOU FOR SHARING. GOD BLESS YOU. 😄 SHIRLEY FROM TEXAS, USA.🗽🌊🌹🌸 HELLO FROM MY 2 CATS ALSO😹🐾😻🐾🐾🌸

Sorry to hear about your husband Shirley. I'm glad to know you're getting back into art and my videos are helping. I have only been to Texas once, in the airport only waiting for a connecting flight. I'd love to visit properly someday, maybe when I win the lotto! ❤️

49 years!!! You know you could have got out of it. I'm joking, that is such an accomplishment that is fading in the horizon of the future of our YUTES these days. Sorry to hear about your best friend just remember it's not forever, it's just good-bye.

I've watched a few "blending" videos out of curiosity as I'm new to colored pencils, but have 70 years of experience with art. I was doing my second mandala the other day and found myself doing the burnishing technique because that is how I learned to blend paint. I really liked the results and thought, "But, that's not how the videos told me to do it." Thanks. This is very helpful.

Oh thank god!! After nearly thirty years using water colour pencils I accidentally bought a very inexpensive set of one hundred and sixty oil pencils!! Ive never used them before & have discovered they have totally different qualities to water colours & I seem unable to blend them as I am accustomed. I found this tutorial so informative & educational!! THANKYOU! Now I know it is a more laborious, time consuming exercise that requires patience & a gentle, persistent touch. I shall uitlise everything you showed. I'm so grateful! Also now understand that using water colour paper is not right & I'll have to go explore at the local art shop.

First off, this is probably one of the best tutorials on blending that I have seen. I tend to blend with all methods, though I will sometimes use my lightest color in the blend in place of the white. It really depends on what I am coloring. Another thing that I do, when blending with white/lightest color, is to color a light layer over the area to brighten up the color. I learned that from another KZbinr. I thank you for this tutorial & look forward to more!

Hot pressed watercolor paper, 100% cotton, and Strathmore 500 series Bristol Vellum are both excellent surfaces for colored pencil. A,so, Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper, on the smoother of the two sides is great for pencil.

Fabriano Artistico Hotpressed watercolour (Extra White) : Best for Polychromos and Legion Stonehenge Hotpressed watercolour paper: As a second choice, (if you can't get the Fabriano Artistico) These 2 papers are the BEST! Next, for people who like more vivid colours, doing some comics maybe? Then the Arches Hotpress Aquarelle is another grea quality paper. I'd risk to add the Winsor & Newton and why not the Hahnemuhle paper, but I haven't personaly tried these, both great quality though!

You have also made me want to try the faber castelles that we can also get as open stock form our local hobbycraft store as I have found out today. But seeing the way you built up the layers has made me very much want to try them out and hopefully they will be the pencils I want to use as I learn to draw and design my own designs. I’m new to colored pencils and coloring books as an adult. I am trying to quit smoking and thought this (Adult coloring) would be perfect for keeping my hands busy. I’ve played around with gel pens and although I love it and can blend a little I think colored pencils are the way to go for my skill level (or lack there of lol). I know this is over a year old but i am so glad that i was able to find this. I am 52 and i guess a very late comer to the world of adult colouring /drawing etc. I was lucky enough to get a swet of polychromos a couple of years ago , I have only used them on and off doing * gems* as i am too frightened of using them in a adult colouring book for fear of * making a mistake* and ruining the book. After watching how you blend the poly i now know how to do it better than what i was doing it before. I guess because my gems were small i was just using a blender pencil and that worked wonders but i am now going to try and just do it using the layering. Also i need to find better paper as well hehehe. Thanks again this help newcommers like me soo much

OMG! Are you psychic ?? Spent all day lookin for an answer and was on my last legs when I came upon this vid. I was questioning my color book! And how to know quality. But you hit the nail on the head. I am new to pencils and my first set was the 120 set of Prismas. Very recently I wanted to see what all the talk about Polychromos was. Got a decent price?on a set of 60. Havent been able to figure out what/why I couldn't get them to blend. Never thought there'd be a different technique for oil based as opposed to wax based. In the middle ofnthe vid, I pulled out my pencils and my first try on leaves and flowers shocked me !! How easy it was to just keep thinkin layers. Many many thanks !! I subscribed and tomorrow goin to start watchin all your vids !!

Thank you this was very helpful and educational. Also quick tip with the white polychromo pencils I use it to mark out my highlights before putting in colours. I almost burnish the brightest highlights and fade it out with the white pencil then go on top with other polychromo pencils. I also use slightly more pressure on my final layers once I’m happy with everything like semi burnish. I also use the colourless blender pencil with the polychromo to smooth out harsh edges and get rid of any paper speckles all of this makes life so much easier using oil based pencils and creates a beautiful smooth effect. Wax pencils and I have better chances of being friends after this video

Thank you so much for showing the 2nd method and mentioning that it's easier for people with limited hand/pressure ability! My hands are paralyzed (left hand I had surgery on to get limited pinch/grip/extension and right hand is no functioning pinch/grip/extension). I was always dominant right hand but after surgery on left I became ambidextrous but I've had to learn over the past few years how to color, draw, etc with both because the splint I used to hold pens/pencils etc for over 20 years of paralysis was discontinued and mine broke where it holds the pens/pencils. Certain times I didn't use the splint but when I needed hard lines or pressure I always used the splint in my dominant right hand. Now I've been using left hand more than ever. Not as challenging as I thought it would be. But this is the first aid only video I've ever seen to mention about ability in hands. I've taught myself to do alot on my own but recently bought oil pencils and I've looking for videos on blending. My first oil pencil coloring didn't blend well. Although I've gotten better in the few weeks of using them. I'm still looking for guidance on blending colors because I'm about to do a deer which has colors from yellow to browns with a few hints of reddish brown, orange brown etc. I just don't want to mess up because it's a Christmas gift for my brother

I'll tell you what's been done: you dissolved the wax with the mineral spirits and the pigment fell to the bottom. Your second layer of pencil is skating across a layer of clear wax that has flattened itself. The wax only dissolved and melted a bit with the solvent but it didn't actually get rid of the wax. Your second layer is "painted" over that clear wax layer. Using that transparent layer to your advantage means you can really make your colours pop; especially if you varnish with a top clear layer (varnish, resin, glass, whatever). Any unevaporated spirit left on the first layer will pull more colour off your pencil too. Having said this, I see why it works but I haven't used this method yet so thank you for the video. I look forward to trying a colour pop effect with it. 😁

Thank you I needed this information for my high school senior portfolio, currently working on a Bouquet of flowers drawing and I knew little to nothing about how colored pencils worked, it wasn’t really my strongest skill in art but not anymore thanks to you Claire ! 💜💐

This has been a great help! I'm a beginner and have been using Marco Raffine along with a Prismacolor colourless blender. Even when I spend ages layering, I still don't feel that the colours are vibrant enough. The blender works but doesn't get rid of the tooth, leaving a grainy texture...now I know why! I've just joined your FB group, today and mentioned that I'm hanging out for a set of Prismacolor...(waiting for a price drop 🤞🏻) I can see more than ever now, that they are going to suit me better. Loving your channel...learning loads. Thank you.

I was really excited watching your video: I have both prismas and polys as the most often colored pencils In my stash. I’ve watched many, many KZbin videos, and your video is the absolute best teaching video for blending that I’ve seen ... I can’t wait to experiment. I very rarely blend to this degree in the detailed coloring books that I prefer. There’s not enough payback between time effort, and effect for me. Maybe a 3 color blend in my Johanna Bassford books here and there. But that’s about it. I haven’t seen anyone mention the Walnut Hollow oil based pencils. I bought them several years ago for coloring on wood, but they do a nice job on coloring book paper too. Perhaps, they aren’t available any more. Also, I wonder how the Verithin Prismas wii work compared to the regular Prismas in small areas of coloring bookks. A little dab of color and a dab of OMS applied with is small paintbrush in the tiny areas sounds like great fun. Thank you for your wonderful video! I learned a lot, and I Will be using my OMS for the first time. 🤗

Thank you so much for this lesson. Like Shirley I am at a certain age and have been looking for something different to do. I decided to make my own greetings cards and thought I would use stamps. I hit on the idea of using coloured pencils and have Polychromos. Blending has been difficult, but after watching Claire, I think I may have been given the boost needed.

First time watching Claire and I am so very happy I did! I was a Prismacolor junkie (and nowhere near expert but did like the tortillion/oderless blender method) and had no idea one could achieve these different seamless colour blends...WOW! I now have a set of Polychromos pencils which I have been struggling with, your video could not have been more timely LOL I am inspired, thank you Claire 👏 Liked and subscribed ❤️

Really thorough tutorial, thank you!! I've got a bit of arthritis and carpal tunnel so have steered away from my beloved colored pencils lately. Your demo of oms gave me an aha! Much less pressure so less pain!! Additionally, you are right again-on the oil based pencils. Just never could understand what the draw was. Now I can dig them out and have another go, bearing in mind "light touch + layers". Many thanks.🧡🧡🧡

I love what you do, I tried the burnish blending but with arthritis in my hands, it's a no-no. I do use OMS, with brushes or stumps. I really need a lot of practice, I follow your videos, I love your voice, shoothing for one with chronic pain who get lost in the coloring moment and forget about everything else. Thank you.

Mimi I have chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy in my hands as well as my feet and legs, but like you I can be heavy handed on occasion to exercise more control over my coloring. After watching this video, I’ll be hunting down my OMS which I’ve owned for years and only tried once (unsuccessfully) with a paper stump. By the way, I’m having a terrible time trying to use the brush nibs on my alcohol pens. Have you found them useful? Have a blessed day!

@@sheriek2777 I do not have alcohol brush pens. I bought a while ago "Real watercolor brush pens " because I do watercolor sometimes. I did not like these, they are not w/c but some kind of dye ink, that is my only experience with brush pens. OMS works wonderfully for me and I can add more layers after, without using a lot of pressure. I do not think that I will achieve her technique but enough for my pleasure. Be kind for yourself because no one else will be.

Great video. Very informative. I have both Prisma and Polychromos. Oil based pencil takes longer to work on, but the result is so realistic. It’s really nice. Whereas Prisma, it’s a lot easier to work with, because it’s softer and creamier. It also produces great result. I love them both. Yes, you are right by saying they are being worked differently. Polychromos stays sharper longer, Prisma doesn’t. You sharpen Prisma more often. Price point of both pencils is high, but worth it. Thank you for the video. Enjoyed watching it.

Outstanding lesson, tips and examples!! I was using my Soho pencils, a hard wax version from Austria. I avoided using them for years until I learned about different surfaces, pressures and techniques. Same with watercolor pencils, and inktense, each has a learning curve, and using them together amps up the results. Brilliant explanation and demonstration. I use opt with a blending stump and a bit of sandpaper or a nail file smooth grit to clean it for blending a new area. I really like the blender pencils as well. My current paper fave is Borden & Riley #234 paper for pens, as I use more pens for zentamgle tiles, and the smoother surface is easier on fine nibs and felt nib brush pens. And, layering on virtually 'toothless' paper limits my pencil coloring results enough that I had to quit being frustrated. Using more traditional 140# cold press tiles ruined nibs so fast even as the pencils results improved. I compromise with 140# hot press paper and even the inktense half pan palettes results are brighter. So much to learn, and your reminder to look for a la carte pieces and experiment to feel and find what is most pleasing is spot on. I'm so thrilled i found your channel.

Hi Claire 💖 I am lucky enough to have been in this community for many years, watching your videos. I have learned so much from you and others but your blending method is my favorite, using mineral spirits or o.m.s. It’s just so much easier on my hands and it’s quicker. Whenever your older blending videos pop up I have to watch them because it’s kind of like magic to watch! So thank you very much for not only your blending tutorials but all of your stunning tutorials! I am sorry for rambling, I am so tired! 💖

Hello I am fairly new to finding and using higher quality pencils, with so many to choose from, I get a bit confused but I really think your video has cleared up a lot for me. I KNOW that I don’t want to spend the time that it would take with all that layering work for Oil based pencils to blend well. I also know that I am naturally heavier handed in my coloring. From what you have demonstrated, I think the blending technique without all the layering work, is a much better fit for me, that being said, I will most likely invest in the Prisma Color Wax base pencil and try to improve my burnishing technique, which is already my favorite style. THANK YOU!
