In this video we look at three different common techniques for how to properly camouflage the human face. This period of instruction is given by Dr. Christopher Larsen of the One Shepherd Leadership Institute based in Missouri, USA.
My buddy Bruce and I recently had the pleasure of attending a One Shepherd training event and it has my 100% stamp of approval. One Shepherd is a non-profit organization which challenges individuals through the mental and physical toughness of the light infantryman concept. For those who seek the challenge of learning to shoot, move and communicate effectively in a cohesive unit, and to develop one’s own leadership ability through military oriented training and war simulation. I'm ex UK infantry. Light and shadow. You can break up the natural lines and contours with a basic stick of brown - light and dark. Less is more. Every round has to count with limited resources ;-) 1st example, followed both sides of his nose, so there is still a symmetry / pattern ... "snap" ... brains all over the foliage - clean that up soldier! 2nd example, not bad, but too much maintenance if you're in the field for longer than a weekend jolly. 3rd example, too symmetrical, pulling out from the centre draws the eye to that centre point, which would be right above your nose and between the eyes ... clap clap bravo ... "snap" ... clean up aisle 3! I'll still go with what I learned, use your natural skin colour as light and dark as well instead of completely synthesizing, but go across and down, not just pulling from the centre, I used to cover most finger tips in brown and then drag in several directions (pretend you're being dragged through a bush!), touching up for areas missed too badly. Job done, we're Oscar Mike. PS: you'd have bug eyes like that if you'd not slept for the last 36 hours! ;-)

In Germany we paint our faces completely green for operations in forests and then use three or four fingers with black color to create angled stripes on top of the green. That way, when looking though the scope of your gun, the stripes are aligned vertically, since in nature vegetation does not usually grow horizontally. This method makes is possible to quickly camouflage your face and to maintain it, as the camouflage can wear off rather quick depending on the environment. Application of this camouflage style can be done by yourself, in less that 10 seconds, for trained people.

I had exactly the same thought, the Korean method seems to be the best theoretical approach because of its simplicity and effectiveness. It probably works especially well in jungle or European woods, you blend into the viney surroundings, like ferns, with those diagonal stripes.
@Zyczu55
@Zyczu55 5 жыл бұрын

@Vidhur
@Vidhur 5 жыл бұрын
@@Zyczu55 Colour is not as important as the guy in the video clearly explains. It's the pattern that matters. Like the guy said: the human eye can detect the shape of a human face. This fact counts even in low light conditions where colour would be of little importance. The pattern on the Korean one is clearly superior in this video.
@Zyczu55
@Zyczu55 5 жыл бұрын
@@Vidhur Yes, I agree that pattern matters but you cant go in green to this forest i.imgur.com/3ugTVPr.png. That is just an example that color is over pattern, you could be on desert with winter camo but it wouldn't help that much as desert camo. My point is that european woods are bad example because 60% of the time there is no green at all (at least in north part of europe) and the rest of the time its closer to brown than green.

I'm a korean. I served the Korean military in the 5th infantry div. From my perspective, your rendition of the korean version is superbly done. also, the reason why we usually dont cover the neck is because we usually have additional neck coverings that uses the traditional camouflage pattern, in addition to the chinese collar. On a side note, as a joke, I remember when i was a new recruit, i also put camouflage paint on my teeth (to be funny to other recruits), but my instructor was impressed and gave me merit points.

The british army representation i have to say isnt the best or at the least is very outdated. We dont apply lots cam otherwise it shines and makes us easier to spot but we do apply to everwhere on the face apart from above the eyes so when we sweat it doesnt drip in our eyes. Also the steaks are pulled randomly across the face as reppettative patterns are easier to spot too. If you see a modern britsh soldier apply cam it would be far more in detail and if done right you would spot his whole body way before his face. Apart from that, its an interesting video espeacially that you get to see how other armies manage this skill

Brent - The funny thing is that One Shepherd staff officers have been badgering me to make this video for literally five years! Now looking back at how smoothly it went, I kinda feel guilty not making it sooner. But you and Bruce make the work look easy. (That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!) In the video I make reference to "the five S" of camouflage, but didn't say what they were. I had to look it up, and it turns out that doctrine now calls them "the seven S" of camouflage. They are: 1. Sound - Noise discipline! 2. Speed - Slow movement. The human eye recognizes movement most of all. 3. Silhouette - Don’t skyline yourself against light backgrounds. 4. Surface - Blend your color and texture to the environment. 5. Shape/Size - Look like your surroundings. 6. Spacing - Don’t stick out by using too much camouflage in one spot. 7. Shadow - Be mindful of casting your shadow onto smooth surfaces. Once again, this video will be hung on the One Shepherd website for future use by all newcomers to our Warrior community. Thanks for the great job and a fantastic looking video! - Christopher Larsen

In the UK I wasn't taught this method. I was actually taught to lightly use a base colour like a natural brown brushed across the face to disrupt the natural shadows (Imagine a kids dirty face). Then using a mix of dark and light natural colours flecked across the face to mimic the natural shadows in your environent. If you try to hard to create solid paterns they end up looking really unatural and humans are naturally very talented at picking out patterns in anything. The S. Korean method shown in this is good because the cammo tends to move in one direction. This is something that you would see in a natural environment, as the suns position will cast most shadows in the same direction, at similar lengths.
@Ukraineaissance2014
@Ukraineaissance2014 2 жыл бұрын
yeah I was taught that as well for british army. Most Important was to use a darker base colour, even mud if you have nothing else, and cover the skin lightly because oil in the skin makes it shine through, but then he was right about not going over the top with the other colours. Also blend the colour edges a bit because hard edges are generally a bad thing. I was also taught what he said about black-people think black is the perfect nightime camouflage but as he says theres nothing black in nature really, and nightime doesnt turn things black but just a darker shade of the colour it already is.
@siras2
@siras2 10 ай бұрын
Agreed. I spent 22 years in the British Army and I'm not convinced that this guy understands our concept at all - ie breaking up natural shapes and shadows - actually using the skin tones as part of the camouflage - all done in the minimum amount of time with the least effort and materials. It strikes me that the American style over-thinks the whole thing. It actually creates patterns, uses way too much cam cream and takes far too long to apply.

the purpose of camouflage is NOT to not be seen.........but to not be recognized WHEN seen. Humans naturally know what another human looks like . We can see "human shapes" even in clouds. So camouflage is used so that when looked at someone, the looker does not realize he is seeing another human. We tend to focus on eyes nose and mouth, so those shapes must be masked, not just colored, to be properly hidden. People come in a lot of colors so just changing the color of the skin won't do it. The colors must make the human face, NO LONGER look human.......and it CAN be done...but it will take practice ..JMO

I had an employee (beautiful 18 year old) about 15 years ago who dressed like a “sexy soldier” for Halloween. She asked me to do her camo. Using basic camo logic I applied her makeup. She freaked out. Looking directly at her own face in a mirror she said it was unreal how she felt like she couldn’t see or recognize herself. The principle is to highlight the holes and break up anything that is human. Humans are symmetrical so your makeup can’t be. Nose is high and linear so you need lowlight on tip but also break the vertical line. Eye sockets are deep so lighten them, but also break the recognizable circle. Cheeks are high so darken them. Her face looked flat and unrecognizeable as human. It was pretty amazing. Wish I had a picture to post of it.
@Libellulaire
@Libellulaire 6 жыл бұрын
What I find interesting is that it's literally the opposite of make-up. In make-up you have to highlight your human features (you highlight the center part above your lips, your nose, your cheekbones, etc.) and try to stay symmetrical, while in camo since you need to destroy the human shape of your face you do the exact opposite.

Thanks, Jesse. Sometimes it helps to compare and contrast different solutions to the same problem. What's interesting about these three styles is that they all work from the same base assumptions to solve those identified problems. Now, many people commenting here note (rightfully) that virtually any smeared color on the human face will essentially solve the problem by simply making the human face not appear as human. That's hard to argue against. I agree. But how effective is that approach at near, mid, and long distance? How effective is that approach in each of the various environments - arid, tropic, winter, urban? We've presented three solutions here that are generally accepted as "best practices" that are further substantiated by theory. Yet we recognize that there are, in fact, other solutions as well.

As an 8 yr vet of the British Army, including a tour of Iraq in 2003, I was never taught to apply cam creme like this. I was always taught , loads of brown in your hand....spit on it .....then apply that as a base layer to hands neck face and ears. Then apply small patches of green or black randomly and fade them into the brown by rubbing around the edges of the patch to create blended depth. That was the same at Catterick, Pirbright or Sennybridge

Andy Davis - Thank you. And let me say up front that the British Army technique I've demonstrated is no longer used. As many British Army veterans have pointed out, the technique I demonstrated in this video is out of date by at least a dozen years. The British technique seems to have changed roughly about 2004. But in my defense, this older technique was in use for the better part of a half century. (Although the older British vets insist I still used too much camo cream!) And yes, as it was taught to me way back in the 1980s, the British Army technique was FAST! Things change over time.

I found the video interesting and well presented . It's just that I joined in 91 did four years, rejoined in 2000 and did another 4 and it was taught to me the same then. Definately the Brits frown on heavy application especially with sharp differences between colours.

Ah. Fair enough. Plenty of US veterans have also insisted that my demonstration of the US method is inaccurate according to the strictest interpretation of the manual. Also fair...but then this technique was taught to me by two NCO instructors at the US Army School of the Infantry at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1985. So, if the schoolhouse, plus all the scientific studies over the past 100 years agree, and this is vindicated through my own combat experience, then I'm going to put my faith in that.

GeekBoy03 Interestingly enough, that person acting as an instructor has hinted himself in a promotion video that he has no military training. As I remembers it, he said he had been in the boy scouts, but had relatives with a military background. While taking a quick look at the web on that One Shepherd Leadership Institute, it seemed that only - roughly - 1/7 of their programs were about what I associate with leadership training. But okay, personal integrity and character surely ARE fundamental building blocks on leadership, so by starting with yourself you can start leading by example... I want to believe there are elements on building upon these in most of their training; after all, they work in teams. It would seem that the lion share of their offer on leadership training has focus is on light, tactical, leadership, but I can not help feeling that in practical terms the basis for most is doing MILSIM or role play using MILES and a decent personal clothing and gear kit. The only "Dr. Christopher Larsen" in Missouri on Linkedin I found was a general otolaryngologist. There is a Christopher E. Larsen who is author of a handful of books, like the "Paintball and Airsoft Battle Tactics". Not saying anything on his expertise and from what appears here he seems to be a fun, nice, person alright. That said, I am not impressed just by any ones sharp, smart, looks and is kind of burned on that. Nothing wrong with not having military training, but it seems a bit strange to me if people tend to appear by their dress and general appearance as being military or former military if they in fact are not. I read in a positive review that the staff for some courses up to 2014 had no active duty experience. Then again, if you are after some MILSIM using MILES and want military looking people telling you military sounding stuff, have some fun.

Interesting. In my service time (Germany) we did it similar as the Koreans, although a bit thinner black lines. But generally we were told also to adapt the amount of colour to the skin type of the individual soldiers, pale skinned people had to do a lot more. Also, we had a completely different pattern for urban areas (we called it Z shape). For me, the Korean looked the best, although having them to hide into typical surroundings would have been interesting to see.

There are some dumbasses who believe in flat earth, chemtrails, and that 9/11 was an inside job and all that. That is the problem with contrarian thought, while it is good to have a critical mind, some people think critical thought is just the opposite of convention. I know a lot of leftist groups that deliberately spread these bs conspiracies in order to create a certain contrast so they can point to others as nuts and delegitimize their opposition and distract from their own failings. For example when there were big compromises in the global warming scam which forced them to change the term to "climate change" there was a big push by them to try and draw people into flat earth in order to have a scapegoat of uneducated public minorities to lump their opposition in.

ahh u must be speaking from experience, im assuming you're from the ADF? well at least for me we mixed the green with the black first thus we have a dark green base at the start and we branch out the 3 stripes into small little 'branches'. we do alot of night jungle training and trust me our uniforms alone will blend into the pitch dark tree lines and you will wont be able to see them just 10+ metres away from u. this has nothing to do with little available training space. speaking of which we only go Aussie so we can have the freedom to play with our bigger toys and exchange tactics with the true ADF, not to learn how to camo our faces. cheers

This man has some serious knowledge about camouflaging. I kinda thought they just paint some green, brown and black on their face with random patterns and that''s it. I think that the South Korean method matched the clothing the best and I think that from a couple 10 meters away you can't really tell where the face actually is. Especially while in the woods.

One correctio here. Hue is the position of the color on the color wheel. So green is very different on the brown. What you ment to say is value or how light or dark the color is. So that green and brown from the beginning have very similar value but very dfferent hue.

Good catch. My bad. You're correct, I meant value (e.g. relative lightness and darkness).
@billlansdell7225
@billlansdell7225 6 жыл бұрын
The phrase you are looking for is "tone value". Black has a tone value of zero, while the brown and green have a tone value of about 5. A tan would have a value of 2-3. The 'contrast' in tone is probably more important than the colours.
