Hey guys!
Today I'm taking a look at the supergiant game, Hades. In particular, I'm taking a look at its artstyle, how the characters are drawn, and how its art separates it from the other supergiant titles, like Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre.
We will also look at various drawing techniques used and the design philosophies used when designing the characters.

I always thought that the character portraits (but also other art assets) have this look of being carved out of brilliant crystals, or something. Like, because they're godly, and beyond this world, the reflections/highlights and little rainbow-y specs often don't really match the materials they depict in a realistic way at all. Like the line art and dark black(ink-like) shadow areas do a good enough job of suggesting material / texture / form on their own. IMO the way the skin on characters are rendered has a exaggeratedly shiny look, almost metallic, as if they all wear some POPPIN' highlighter.

Amazing art analysis video! This might explain why I'm so much in awe of the game's visuals. Hades II just came out and it still feels like eye candy.

Hey boss! I don't know if you're still making videos, but I just wanted to say I really loved this one I wanted to add something quick about the art style and direction- the characters in each supergiant game use cell-shading, even for the more painterly games and even if they are implemented differently throughout. But the through line of the styles and how they give so much color and vibrancy. It is both the fact that they have those bright pops of hyper-saturated color, and the fact that every value change that takes place on a form is cut with a much more saturated color. To explain it better, if an arm is painted with 2 colors, the base and the shadow, in between them will be a middle color that has more saturation than the other 2. The result are these colorful bands that follow the forms of light and help smooth the planes This methodology, the fact that when a lighter value turns into a darker one there is often a bright burst of color, is useful in any form or type of painting. This principle exists because the mid tone is often the closest to grey in value, and colors that are the closest to grey in value have the highest potential for saturation. You can see this in real life: closely examine a shadow and where it turns to light. the tone between the two creates a band of saturated color, this color being more saturated than either the shadow or the light! I hope my comment has helped in some way. its been 2 years since you've posted and I have no clue if you've continued art. I hope you have! Even if you haven't, I hope other readers can learn from this comment. Have a good day!

Hey man! Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment, really made me day :'>. I still do art and I do plan on posting here again soon, life just really got in the way I guess... And actually, what you said is really interesting because I literally was just learning about this a few weeks ago! It's something that I never really seemed to notice before, but when you do add it into drawings, it makes your art pop so much more. As a proponent of hyperpop visuals, it's a great tool!
