Good character design is highly under-appreciated I feel. Most people don’t realize the sheer amount of time and effort a lot of professional concept artists take into account. I love that Pikat shows us her process on her redesign as it gives more people a glimpse at just how vital good research is. I’m nowhere close to Pikat’s level as I’ve tried my best to take the time into making my little png design for my avatar, and the amount of iterations i tried doing while trying to get the feedback of my community was an eye-opening experience. All those designs and studies of armor pikat casually shows in this video are probably tens if not hundreds of hours of research and iteration. Idk how she does it, I struggled just after 20 variations of my own design lol. I have nothing but respect and admiration for pikat and other creators that put this amount of effort into their work!

A tip for armor design (specifically late medieval/early modern full plate) is to remember that not every rivet actually attaches two plates together. Some do directly join two plates together, but others are just for show, some are hidden under other lames, and others are riveted to leather straps on the under side connecting the plates together. This is integral to understanding how the plates are able to move and allow for a wide range of motion.

@@PorValis yeah, the only problem I have with relying *only* on character creators, is that they can be very limited. Sometimes you want to add a specific design to a character, but you can't find it in a character creator. You could draw the design aspect when you get to the drawing phase, but without any references or any idea of what you're doing, it might not look right. So you could just use both! sometimes with a lot of the advice centered around good character design, i wonder where really out there stuff like jojo’s bizarre adventure falls into place within these generally accepted rules. especially because many jojo designs seem to be very odd or borderline nonsensical, yet it’s still heralded as having great designs. this was a good watch and you have really great tips!
@arthurcarnegie91442 ай бұрын
I think a piece of that is the audience’s acceptance that this is a “Bizarre” world. Jojo designs are often wild outside of context, but within the story, that’s perfectly normal and we’ve accepted it as such. It’s a lot of weird character design, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility in this particular world anymore because it is self described as “Bizarre.” The world is bizarre and embraces it, so the audience embraces it. Sometimes it pushes too far and that’s when the audience stumbles, but then they continue forward accepting the new standard of strange. (Looking at you, alien boy from Diamond is Unbreakable) Plausibility still exists. It is plausible that any of these characters would look the way they do because they exist in a bizarre world, and that plausibility is key. Jojo characters are not held to the standard of “plausible to exist”, but instead it is held to the standard of “plausible in this particular world”.

Totally excellent advice for when it comes to certain elements of the design process and how to research. I would say though, that there's an element missing which can be a hugely powerful tool in character design. That is storytelling and character traits reflected in your design. It's great to have the technical understanding of the design elements but if it's missing the "why" aspect then it can feel hollow and purposeless. All design and no character. I studied animation at uni and one of the things that really stood out in a good character design, is when visual elements tell you something about the characters personality or story. It's the second step in making something make sense and be usable to the character. A very clean design, lacking personal trinkets or quirks can tell you that a character is very professional and closed off. Where as little personal affects, scruffiness or extra elements of customisation that the character may have added to their own outfit speaks to a more organic or free spirited character. One of the best first steps is to actually get in the mind of the character. What are they like? Why do they style themselves a certain way? Do they hide behind an appearance or express themselves through how they look? Is their outfit comfortable or restrictive and is that through personal choice? How do they hold themselves and why? Do they stand tall or slouch? Once you add these elements into the design process you incorporate things that the viewer can attach or relate to. That is a step beyond it being compelling just by looking cool. I my opinion that is the biggest difference between what comes across from these two different drawings. The first one projects a different personality, more grounded, a little slumped but still looking forceful. The second design with the more flamboyant, aerial pose and elegant baroque armor looks like a more proud, showy type of character. Baroque is a proud and showy type of architecture after all. It's meant to be showing off. So that's what ends up coming through character wise too. If you don't consider things like that when choosing the aesthetics you pull from then you can end up saying things through your design that you didn't intend to. (And that's not even mentioning the deeper level of thought that can go into the storytelling of the universe you're creating for your character. Why does their culture have baroque sensibilities, or is it a style your character chose in opposition to a culture in their universe? Is the character living in a certain time period or culture which is reminiscent of the baroque period in our history? Is it an alagory? There's so many levels of storytelling you can plunge into from here. ) Amor is also an interesting element in a design because it can be a uniform that deliberately detracts from characterisation. That a character hides behind or is forced to conform to. Or it can be a very personalised thing that the character has built up over time for their needs. Thinking about these "why" questions when going into the initial design can make a character seem like a more fully rounded, realised person. Then you get the believability of the practical elements of the design e.g how the amor works, and the believability of the characters persona, a relatability, working together to create a truly strong design.

The idea of building up a visual library is so key. It feels super daunting trying to design as an intermediate artist, I think, because it's like - oh my god, I have no idea how ANY of this works even though I've been drawing for forever. As always it comes back to slowly building up knowledge in different areas in order to finally consolidate, and then being able to revisit that research on later designs so it doesn't take you as long. Also, I'd like to add - when it comes to personal projects and OCs, I think iteration is a good idea. You don't need to focus on getting the perfect design the first time; you can get your general ideas for a character down, and slowly iterate that design towards something better as you become more knowledgeable with your inspirations. I think design will naturally also feel better as drawing skill improves - because you have a better knowledge of shapes, composition and posing, which are so so important in design but are more embedded in fundamentals. As someone going into animation I'm also trying to keep shape language and silhouette in mind, which of course leads back to design. In other words improving your art skills in any area is going to make character designs better, which I think is another reason it can feel overwhelming. Looking at the two designs side by side, the new design is posed more dynamically and has a more interesting silhouette, which I think helps a ton. Plus, it's asymmetrical which gives the eye another path to naturally follow, so it's easier to digest too. Extra research undoubtedly helped emphasise the traits of the initial prompt, but I think there's a lot of subtlety in the improvement. Anyway, those are just my ramblings as an intermediate artist myself. Great video as always. The kind of stuff that makes me actively want to go out and study anatomy or something. I dunno. You make it look fun!

@ObsessedwithZelda26 ай бұрын
Hope it’s okay if I try to spitball a bit? If you’re more inclined to try designing first rather than having a character in mind, there are definitely a lot of artists in that same boat! What I’m aware they do is work in reverse, where they start sketching from a mishmash of ideas and cool visuals and think of the purpose/role of those things as they go which then keeps informing their next sketches in the process. But if you do best with a firm idea ahead of time but the writer well is a bit dry, here’s some ways to generate your own prompts: Setting! Pick a place the character is from, either in reality or fantasy. And try to be a bit specific. Not just a continent or large country, but a specific tribe or state. Or in the case of fantasy with less well developed maps, more like country/city within that setting. As you research a bit for this, you can find so many ideas on what traits to give a character, but even if no ideas come to you, you’ll definitely see a lot of visuals you might like to include! From there, picking a viable job is sooo helpful. You can find a lot of lists of common jobs by time period online if you’re not sure what might be available for your setting. And if you like scifi, I’m sure people have made speculative lists too. Once you know a job (or job of parents at least) and thus class, it will help you a lot in deciding more in depth what clothes to give them, maybe even how they style their hair, and especially How they wear their clothes. People who perform labor can often have tricks to keeping their clothes out of the way, or have more ways of storing a lot of things to carry and etc for example. While wealthier people or those with more sit down jobs are more free to have more impractical outfits. It’s okay if you lack experience in how this all should work irl, just as long as it helps you think, right? After you have a lot of these ideas down, from there it might help guide you to what you think the personality is like. But if not, you can always try iterations for different archetypes. Ir go on tvtropes and click a random page if you’re really stumped Depending how you feel about AI as a tool, I know there’s a website like ‘this person does not exist’ you could try cycling through to see if anything sparks inspiration for what type of face you like. Or use some pinterest boards of interesting faces. You can say ‘wow this eye shape is so cool but this persons lips give an interesting silhouette’ and combine things you like. When you have the final design they might start having a clearer personality to you just by how they look. It’s always fine to redesign something later if this happens too where you can narrow your focus a bit. Ah, hope you can find something useful in all that. Good luck!

@@ObsessedwithZelda2 woah woah woah aw thank you for taking the time to write down all of these tips!! they're great. i especially like the idea of choosing a job and class, just cause of how easy and direct the questions that brings up are (aside of the practicality of the outfits, it'll say what kind of environment to add, and it's easy to think of why that is their job and it all develops itself) i think this would be a good start to exercising design muscles. part of the issue i guess is not being invested when i have an idea, but maybe it's good to be able to just leave one for the next when drawing for practice, and along the way something would be so cool i would keep developing the world. definitely trying this like right now! i hope other people end up checking this comment as well!!!!

I love the very informative video! Also another thing i'd like to add when taking note of character design is their poses and personality! Try to incorporate how you'd think that character would act. For example, a happy-go-lucky girl. Her poses are more joyful with a design that feels refreshing and playful. This helps the audience come up with a plausible conclusion of a character's personality. "Oh this character is very stern with the way their expressions furrow with sharp shapes." When dealing with character design for objects into humans, let's say a sunflower, start with what usually comes to people's minds when they see a sunflower. Yellow. Bright. Happy. This can also work with colors. Such as the color yellow representing happiness and optimism. You cmay also try this with artstyles too, choosing which kind of style would best fit your character's overall mood. That's all from me, I'm not really an expert so you can take my advice however you want :P

hey! i think you really improved quite a bit with the new drawing compared to the last. the poleyns are shaped much better with the knees, the gauntlets have definitely seen improvement from both a grounded and fantastical perspective (absolutely ADORE the claw design), and same with the couters. the sabatons look wonderful as well, far better than the previous metal shoe design (as sabatons are not just metal boots). however, if you do want to improve it some more, i have some critique (coming from a huge armour nerd): i think the cuirass as a whole would benefit from some reworking. i think the ornate designs on the breastplate work well but it might be the proportions that hurt it; the breastplate usually stops at around the belly button, and many cuirasses follow a wasp waist look. check out the Sigismund harness for a nice example. i think that more round shape would make it easier to incorporate that design, while keeping an elegant feel. (it looks like the metal is twisting with the angel) as for the tonlet, i like what you're doing with the bottom feathers. very nice design there. however, the tasset covering the crotch is i think a bit detrimental to the design as it looks like it's loosely dangling from the diamond-shape above it. i think removing that, and pushing in the two side tassets just a little would work really well. you could even add a fauld (skirt of maille) that has a spiked design to keep that angular theme. also, adding lames to the bottom of the breastplate would also greatly help the shape of the cuirass, as it'll help mitigate the awkward shapes you might have created with the breastplate. again, id suggest referring to the Sigismund harness or maybe even a look at the tomb of maximilian's statues the spaulders arent bad at all, matter of fact i think the shrinking of them does good! but i suggest experimenting with more designs, they can get very decorative and come in many different shapes and sizes.

This is a really great video for me because I struggle a lot designing characters, or anything, but I really want to be able to do it better. I really like this content

just listen to really epic music while drawing, so the epic vibes translate into the final art

as an "armor expert" I suggest you do a lot of research on different types of armor for different styles of combat, different styles of armor from different countries in the same period and also different periods, learn what makes a good design work for a particular job, how it's assembled, etc. research armor from old manuscripts as well. it's important to see how armor evolves and why. that is intrinsically related to how technology and society evolve and influence each other.

There is no bad idea, just bad execution. Makoto Michiko has the toenail superpower and she's a fine character.

I may suck at drawing, but it’s cool how being an armorer made my character design incredibly badass This video is making my armor autism scales go off the charts.. now I wanna make a set of gauntlets or something

11:50 in that cases, usually I set 2 or 3 concepts for the character and fix the design to those. I.E. you have wings as a visual element, you could use roses, or leaves, and make every detail with theses shapes ;) it's easier to make ornaments without any previous guide and it reinforcements the key concepts of the characters :)

I streamline a lot of my characters, they're not anime style characters. Their outfits are relatively simple, because I often see designs with such complicated armor designs, dresses, suits, with thousands of tiny details, and my brain just. Shortcircuits. I draw someone wearing a simple leather jacket and it pops more and sticks better in my brain
