I feel bad for this guy. He just tried making a video about an idea he had and gets ripped to shreds in the comments about it. 1) Get over it, it's just a case. It may be expensive and there could have been more options, but just get over yourself. 2) he's not high or drunk. For some reason, people don't understand what the fuck an accent is. this is actually quite sad, and to you, unlucky KZbinr who made this video, good job on handling comments, man. Great video btw :D

I found the project neat, but it's like halfway there at best. I'd say that it just needed to be more... finalised than that. Like, I see that he had to drill the top of the case, but actually he could switch the end of the power supply for an L-shaped supply. Author says that he never soldered and will consider stuff in the future... Maybe it's just me, but if that video was called "part 1" or "early prototype" it would be less of an issue, as you expect a more of a, whaddya callit, complete project. Full experience.

That won’t work as the PCIe slot for the WiFi card isn’t rated for 75w which is what you need to drive the GPU. Not to mention it has limited PCIe Lanes available. Usually the WiFi slot is rated a x1, that’s not enough for a GPU. You would be better off using a USB external graphics solution and I don’t recommend that either.

An interesting idea indeed! Here are some ideas/points: 1) Considering you wanted a low power option, the 500W PSU is really overkill. Workout how many hard drives you want to use, find out their power requirements and get an old low power PSU to match this requirement. There are plenty out there in old PCs which are rotting in people's homes or the junk yard. 2) Why not use the case power switch to activate the PSU? Easy enough if it's push on and push again for off. Just pop the 2 wires in the place of the green and black wires of the PSU (mainboard) power connector. 3) While on the topic of cases, why use an expensive case? With the amount of hacking, why not use a cheap or old one instead? You can still add some more fans yourself at a fraction of the cost. Fans can be sourced from other old PCs etc. 4) Speaking of power, are you using the laptop's power supply? I think you might be...If the plug is a simple 2 connector plug, i.e. +ve & -ve, and the Voltage is 12V, you could use the case PSU to power both laptop and HDDs. But this is most likely not the case. Maybe a cheap DC to DC converter could do the trick here? There's plenty on the market... 5) It may pay you to make some form of heat sink for the graphics chips so they don't run so hot. A simple bar of, say, aluminium, steel or copper clamped onto the chips would make a huge difference. Don't forget the thermal compound! 6) Depending on where the ports are located, you could rotate the board accordingly for easier access. You could also use extension cables to extend the ports from the laptop to the case so you can simply plug in the real cables from the back (or front for USB). I know u can't solder, but maybe this could be a good opportunity for you to learn. that way you could use the case's ports and solder the cables to the extension cables. Hope this little list gives you some inspiration to keep going! Good Luck and make sure you post the results! :)

u could solder the usb header from ths case onto some male usb connectors. allso, its easy to power the laptop with a normal psu. just cut off the 24 pin connector, and permanantly short the pwr controll pins, tap off the appropriate power wires, and solder them to the laptop plug. btw, NEVER solder ANYTHING directly to ur motherboar, solder it to a plug, or a pcb that plugs into the motherboard, like the one with the pwr button. allso, u could daisy chain the case fans off of the cpu cooler, so they are only on when the system needs them. allso, u should get a usb to ide converter and a dvdrom drive.

The meta is to keep as much of the laptop as possible. You can mount the power brick in the case, solving a lot of the locational issues for the power out. The io shield might be an unsolvable issue, but extension cable+rear expansion slot combos are super cheap to get the IOs to the rear. As for fan power, purchasing USB fans, and a cheap USB power only splitter is reliable as hell, and at 5 volts per fan should be a good balance of fast and quiet. There are also converters that will let you turn the laptop display into hdmi, if you absolutely need it, but you probably won't cause: Last step is sacrifice a usb 3 port for usb wifi, and run the mpcie through a converter to a pcie 4x. That's enough for most graphics cards (that are a reasonable price atm lol) which can handle your display needs pretty much losslessly. Mounting the riser and card in the case is as easy as screwing in the bracket, marking the screws, which basically all of them will have, and doing a bit more drilling. I'm surprised by how much extra oomph you got from the base cooler, honestly I'd have beefed it up a bit. Great start as a flip build. Room for improvement, but can't argue with a workable server. if I had to recommend a storage expansion solution, with only one pcie slot and one spare sata, go for a usb 3 hub and spinning drive. Cost to storage is great, and the USB 3 won't bottleneck very hard or at all on a spinner. honestly though, who cares about which case you use lol, paying premium for cases is an absolute scam, ignore the haters

Before finding this video I did the exact same thing. Old Compaq Presario cq56 with broken display into an old pc case that I gutted. The purpose was to help cool the laptop, which didn't have a heat issue before but I am installing a quad core cpu which will produce significantly more heat. I solved my wifi issue by taking apart the display and removing the 2 wifi antennae wires and running them to the outside of the pc case, giving me even more wifi range than there was before being transformed from a laptop. I had a couple more issues, the old pc had a big fan in it but there were no ports on the laptop motherboard that were available and none that were compatible either way because the case is 5 years older than the laptop. I eventually soldered the fan wires on to a usb connector which works fine but does seem like a waste of one of my 3 usb ports. Anyways, my only remaining issue is the power button, which look identical to yours. It is becoming a pain having to reach in the computer and push the tiny button to power on. I was wondering if you figured out how to wire an extension since you made this video? Would be a great help. Great video, by the way.

Its always cool to see people be creative! That said your cooling issue was likely from dust buildup and the desperate need for some thermal compound ($15 or less) afterwards it would have probably run cooler than ever., and a new battery wouldn't of hurt.

nice! but a couple of things to note, readyboost is not the same as RAM, it is significantly slower than it. If all your doing is running a Minecraft server, I would suggest using Linux instead of Windows as it uses far less system resources and you could supplement the RAM with a couple gigabytes of the ssd dedicated to a swap partition (basically, when the RAM is full, it overflows into said partition) which would be way faster than any USB solution.

Also you might be able to use an eGPU enclosure for the laptop to get a graphics card in there although you probably want the atx PSU anyways to get that running since it requires external power.

Most desktops can blow a laptop out of the water or last longer trying. The problem with most laptops is because of their size the cooling is often mediocre. Things like email and web browsing usually won't cause a thermal problem but a lot of laptops will sound and feel like a hot hair dryer as soon as any more processing load is put on it. I am sure it has happened to us all at least once, we do something that pushes it a little bit harder than normal and suddenly it sounds like the neighbor is running a leaf blower.

A for effort for sure. Its like I think it can be better or I know it can, but I'm not sure that I could do better without sodering.. but I did watch this because I'm about to do the same thing with my laptop with a broken screen. I'm hoping to find answers, this video did not have it. But when screen is taken out of the case and disconnected the computer just beeps it knows it's not connected even if I connect a tv thru hdmi. I'm trying to figure out if that's a commen issue and how to get past it.

Not recommended. Desktop power supply units provide different voltages, most of which are more than what the laptop motherboard can handle.

Would doing this improve general proformence of a laptop? I have an old acer laptop, that i've been thinking of doing this with. It quickly overheats playing minecraft, which you said it helps in the vid. The battery is shot anyway so its basically a desktop now. Are there any other benefits? Btw, this is my only computer other than a tablet which is basically a netboolk. Any advice it highly welcome.

2SavedByChrist Sell your laptop and buy a desktop. You can then buy an used desktop, or buy used components, you can easily build a desktop with much better performance than your laptop.

This idea was more like a waste of a great case, You could of brought a cheap laptop cooler from a pc store for around $20-60 that would cool the laptop much better then that. Sir you just wasted your laptop and a beautiful case.

he covered this in the video. he wanted a 24/7 server, and i dont know about you, laptops dont run 24/7. no matter the power of the cooling fan, there is simply not enough room
@monomii2841
@monomii2841 10 жыл бұрын
It's not a waste of a case, it's simply giving the laptop more functionality, and less overheating. Yes, you can just buy a cooler, but nobody is going to want to carry them around, they make the laptop extremely heavy to carry around, your better of just turning your laptop into a desktop if your not going to be carrying it around as much, besides, you can upgrade it any time you want with the components right in the case. You cant do that with a normal laptop.

thefuturistichawk837 You can't complain that a cooler is hard to carry around, so instead you make it completely static in a computer case. This is stupid.
