I'm so glad I found this video and your older one. my laptop which cost me 3k is dying from heat and a lack of new parts, so, I've been wracking my brain thinking if it's possible to make a desktop from it seeing as I have a rtx 2080 and i9. and you've just proven its doable and relatively straight forward too. Thanks for the thoroughly well explained video!

Ik this was a while ago, but try and look into your fans. I had the same issue, thermal throttling everywhere on everything, games I shoulda stomped not running even relatively well etc etc. Cracked my laptop open to see if maybe dust had blocked the exhaust. Nope! It was some loose rubber bit from manufacturing that got stuck into the fan, only allowing one to turn. Dropped something like 12C instantly when I fixed it
@tantaloon1
@tantaloon1 2 жыл бұрын
@@jacksonneedham2792 savage, my issue is I'm running an i9 9900k in a laptop. it runs so hot that my dc input has melted the adapter while it's plugged in. I need a new dc input soldered on with that heat gun solder, but parts are already scarce for it after such a short time. Its a ridiculous. And its a laptop that shouldn't exist to be fair 😂

There's kind of a big problem with this. BIOS settings can get reset to defaults for various reasons (dead battery, BIOS upgrade, BIOS can enter failsafe mode if there is hardware issues, user changing the settings, etc...). If the power or screen settings change it would effectively brick the entire system unless you plug the original keyboard back in. Would have been interesting to look at the keyboard connector or any microchip on it and try to just solder switches for the screen/power. Could also have done some others like volume. Also you would have made the system totally portable. At the very least I would hide the keyboard inside the backpanel for emergency maintenance (otherwise it will get lost).

If you don't require the decorative aspect you can download the manufacturer's service manual or better yet (in most cases) find a display replacement video then simply remove the damaged notebook display in an hour or two. Then it becomes a serviceable PC you can connect to the same external peripherals as when using the notebook as a desktop replacement workstation.

If you want to take the power button problem a step further, you can use a multimeter to find what pins are used for the button on the keyboard and the resistance if needed then (carefully) solder a button to the respecting pins with the corresponding resistance (if it uses resistance for identifying keys).

There's another reason for MDF being a superb choice of material - which you may or may not be aware of. MDF is akin to a light grain wood in density. As a result, it has some good resonant qualities that is why it's used to make speaker cabs. It's also cheeper than pine or actual wood... Interesting build.

Great point, also, the great thing about MDF is it will not be affected by the weather and warp and bend like some woods. One thing to remember though is the glues used for MDF is highly toxic. Make sure you wear a mask when cutting that material.

I can give this video a 9.9 out of 10 because there was 1 factor that I've discovered that may be seem trivial. Laptop batteries eventually won't be able to hold a charge. So if anything depends on that battery separately it will eventually stop. As long as it's plugged in though all functions should be fine because it's getting it's power from there.

It is funny how this comment is not that far from truth. In practical application of technology, stripping down computers and components assembled by other manufacturers is sometimes just more practical and is used all over the place. Chances are, most of the people watching used one of repurposed machines like that themselves, they just didnt realize it. I have seen things like that attached to display terminals in public a lot. And when it comes to ISS if something breaks they fix or repurpose it a lot. It is specially common in countries that border first world countries but are not ones themselves. In first world countries like US people trow out perfectly usable tech, so people just take all that stuff for cheap, move it to poorer countries, re-purpose it and sell it. It is very common for countries in Asia or eastern europe.

The subwoofer in the wooden case is genius for acoustical reasons. Bass gets amplified in wood since the wood resonates and essentially makes the whole of the wood a part of the woofer. That's a trick I used to great effect when I was in the barracks and couldn't fit a big sound system in. Just positioned the woofer in the back middle of the underside of my desk so that the walls of the desk made it seem like I had something more expensive than the small sub woofer I had.

9/10 Does not have RGB to boost the performance of the laptop by a 15%. Nevertheless, this is a very awesomely explained and crafted project!

Still not worth it, imho. The costs and time sum up to an amount on which you buy an all-in-one computer any time.

honestly the battery idea is very good for having a backup power source to save and shut down in case a power outtage happens, avoiding a sudden power loss and resulting in less corrupted files

Good Job! One thing makes it easier: Instead of using a shorting switch and the usb Relay Power circuit, you just can take a release-button. the power supply is connected everytime, even after shutdown. wehn you press the release button it triggers a signal when it goes back to connect the circuit and system starts ;) no need for usb relay

Only big concern i have: Monitors heat up too and they normally rely on standard convection to ditch it from the back. This seems to cover that.

Many laptops have two interface pads on the logic board, that when shorted will boot the laptop, you could solder a power button to these pads fairly easily.

The battery also makes a sort of UPS, so if there is power disruption, your computer doesnt get shut down.

Remember that laptop cases are designed around the cooling fan. Do *NOT* simply build a closed case with a few holes around the fan, make sure that you put vent holes where the original case had it's holes. Also: heatpipes *ARE* sensitive to orientation so if you put your board in upside down, you may lose a significant amount of cooling capacity (laptops are designed to be operated on a flat surface or, drumroll, on your lap, tha angle is not supposed to exceed 45 degrees or so.

if you aren't concerned about slim design, it's easier to just mount a CPU cooler and upgrade the thermal paste solution. Laptop TDPs are tiny and something like an intel stock cooler which costs next to nothing will likely be cheaper and as good if not better than the laptop cooling solution
