All I can add to this is Debian is a great operating system. It will run forever and have months of uptime at a time. Nothing ever crashes. ...until you update a single teeni tiny package. Oops. Better start over.

On Debian right now and my DE has crashed or frozen multiple times over the last week lol. It's great, but the guy is right, it's work to use Linux.

I like to use my laptop to work. That is the reason I'm using Linux personally. Ubuntu is stable enough. I had more problems with Windows going me the middle finger than you think. Debian downstream is usually stable enough to be a daly driver. That is my experience at least.

I mean I like linux... but he's not wrong. Once you get everything you want up and running its great but its far from straight forward at least to a noob like myself.
@plebisMaximus Жыл бұрын
Been using it on and off since 2017 and I've tried most notable distros. It's always work to use and never stops being work. It's great, but neither stable nor easy to use. He's completely right.

Try Mint, very straightforward and similar look and feel to Windows 7. But if you're into the eye candy and gee-gaws of Windows 10/11, go that route.
@RisingRevengeance Жыл бұрын
@@richardwernst It's actually what I've been using most. I really like it. I use it daily on my laptop and would probably use it on my main pc if my hardware was supported.
@richardwernst Жыл бұрын
@@RisingRevengeance Is your main pc so new that it's not supported, or something else? I do run Windows on my main system as I help my friends and family with computers and I need to be able to see/check the things they see, etc. Held off moving to 10 from 7 until October of this year due to my great little Canon scanner isn't supported after 7, I really like the W7 interface (so similar to Mint), and hated giving up the ownership/transfer ability of my operating system to MS.
@RisingRevengeance Жыл бұрын
@@richardwernst no no it's not new by any means, certain niche stuff like my capture cards do not play well with linux and there's not even a jank way to get them working afaik. So the best I could do is dual boot if I want to keep it as is.

I have dedicated weeks to figuring out problems on my linux, only for me to come out the other side as a more capable user, and never having to worry about those problems ever again
@Deinorius Жыл бұрын
Well... yeah. He's not wrong but it can be different. I'm using Arch Linux and I chose this distro because I want my OS to be as I want it to be. The work I'm putting into it are mostly things for personalization. I don't even have crashes at all! But that's just me. I don't really have experiences with Point Release distros because I straight up went the Rolling Release path. On the other side I had my fair share of work on Windows. So there's that.

As a Windows user I generally feel this way, but god damn, Windows 11 is making it hard for me to keep defending this system. I had to do SO MUCH FIDDLING to turn off all of Microsoft's garbage tracking and advertisements. I might as well be using Ubuntu if I'm going to spend so much time scouring the deepest recesses of the settings menu.

Not at all controversial. I like to fidget with my computer instead of getting real work done, and that's why I use Linux.

I don't really see the issue here. He's more of a "physical technology" nerd as opposed to a "digital technology" nerd. I'm a programmer that uses Linux, and couldn't care less about some of the topics he talks about (like the dishwasher stuff), and he couldn't care less about Linux. Two sides of the same coin
