Ah, floppies: I work in IT, and there are *still* major companies out there using computers that use floppies, and occasionally I'm called upon to create one with some utility or another to accomplish a configuration task. So, I reach for my pile of recyclable floppies to create one on demand. (Yes, I still need a USB floppy drive, and it is, indeed a challenge to create most of the vintage diskettes on a Windows 10 system, since the utilities themselves are 16 bit!) So, why can't I just save the floppies I created years ago? Because they go bad kicking around in my laptop bag waiting for that once every year or two need. Usually they go bad because the metal hub in the center of the diskette comes unglued. So, I pull a diskette out of the pile and do a full format with Windows, and throw away all disks that fail until I get a good one. Then, I create what I need (sometimes I have to find a Linux machine and use dd to copy an image), get myself out of that situation and forget about it until the next customer needs an EISA Configuration Utility floppy for a Digital Equipment Corp. AlphaServer from 1995, or something else, and I have to re-learn and figure out how am I going to do that with the system I have now? You'd be surprised at how much critical infrastructure still depends on equipment with floppies! And I don't have a Windows XP machine anymore. (By the way, I don't want your floppies, I still have plenty!)

I used to make a good side-living out of reading, transferring and converting files from floppies (3", 3.5", 5.25", 8") in many different formats to modern storage. Happy memories!

My Akai sampler and Korg Triton Classic still require floppies (you can upgrade but I've never bothered). I imagine there's a lot of people out there with antiquated equipment that would happily take them square coasters of your hands. With boxes and long neglected cupboards, I have often found myself emptying them out into piles whilst lamenting the items obsolescence, quizzing myself from where it came from, wondering if it might still have a use or is outright rubbish, much the same as yourself, only to find that those piles have intermingled. The arm sweep back into a box or an empty draw or cupboard is usually how these things end for me.

I just was thinking about the James Burke connections, but could not remember his name. Great series. Many thanks. My rule is if I haven't used it in the last year, it's gone and will never miss it!

This reminds me of the fact that I have a whole bunch of old books that my dad told me to sort earlier this week, and for some reason I haven't yet, even though I've been home the whole time...

I had that model of Dell I believe, same colour. Biggest issue for me is even slight movement would brick the hard drive, I had to get it repaired multiple times.

yellow was the best floppy disc. I remember my dad, who collects music instruments, had a synthesizer of some kind that used floppies. If I could dig that up I would love to see what it does with those, cause that would be ultimate retro kitsch cred

There was some half-amateur system to store digital data on VHS, too. Each cassette is worth of tens of GB of data which is not bad.
@sonyp1804 жыл бұрын
@@allmycircuits8850 I tried that few years back. By the time you have enough error correction to allow for bad sections of tape. You can just about get 1.5GB on a 180min tape.
@allmycircuits88504 жыл бұрын
@@sonyp180 Seems about right. I've remembered name for it in Russia: ArVid, short for Archive on Video. They manufactured ISA cards in 90s to connect VHS player to PC. They used pretty simple coding (two levels of brightness for 0 and 1) and Hamming error correction and they got 2,06 GB on a 180 min tape. This is probably not a limit, some more novel methods could store more, also they should take into account all the 'diseases' of VHS playback as crosstalks, unstable speed and so on, but it was small company, they couldn't do it in proper time, so it was replaced with conventional HDDs.

My job still uses floppy disks. I work in a CNC machine shop, and a lot of our machines are so old that the only way to input programs onto them is either by 3.5 inch floppy or serial. Some have been converted to work with more modern media though.
