@@davidmcguire6043 Oh yes, because concatenating " | firmware" onto the title means he won't get any views or get any traffic. I just suggested the title was unclear. Not sure why you're so aggressive over a mere suggestion. I'm just saying that his current titles are lacking clarity, it's now his job to then take this criticism and try to work around it. Neither of us are KZbinrs, so YOU don't know what works for a title, and neither do I. With that being said, we can both make suggestions to LMG as we sit fit as long as it's constructive.

1:10 there's actually a biological analogy to this called the neuromuscular junction. this is like the difference between a nerve and a muscle cell. At the neuromuscular junction where your nerves connect to your muscles you have muscle cells called motor endplates that have receptors on them and can react to neurotransmitters like acetylcholine in order to activate.

As being an employee of HP, i can confirm to you that the method of updating only when an issue arises is not a good method. Some updates are pushed to prevent issues from happening that would in the end require an system board replacement, such as Intel ME firmware. Not to mention it does provide security improvments and bug fixes that may have caused issues you didnt know you were having. Ideally for best performance and stability its recommended to keep all of your drivers, firmware, bios and chipset up to date. Linus is right though there is a risk of doing a bios update, but the chance of something happening is very slim as long as you know what you are doing.

@@jamesbuttery3862 Was the ME firmware bundled with a bios update or seperate install. Software is not lines of codes. Lines of codes are ways to make visually see software. When you are pushing buttons which what codes or anything else you want to call, it is equivalent of flipping switches to send current or voltage this direction or that direction. Software is the game plan. You can write your game plan and hand it to someone, telling or instructing them what to do. The writing it on a piece of paper is simply a visual way of seeing your game plan. This needs to be made very clear. I suppose you can call the instruction you wrote on that paper software. Nonthesless it needs to be made crystal clear.

Firmware is a set of instructions or a program that runs microcontroler(s) in your electronic devices driving it's principal functions and usually stored in eeprom memory chip. Without this code\firmware your device is literary a brick. "Conventional software" is also a program but sits on a higher abstraction level that allows us to control the device. The best analogy would be, think of the firmware as an autonomic\parasympathetic nervous system in human body, that controls basic functions like intestine peristalsis, heart beat rate and etc.

• You forgot to mention that eventually all products will be discontinued and support dropped, so firmware updates will cease. • 4:50 - You don't need to hack firmware to damage hardware; there have been malicious programs that could destroy hardware for decades, like one that would keep slamming the drive-head in a C64 drive against the back-stop until it is misaligned and can't read disks anymore, or the Turkey virus that focused the monitor's beam on one spot to burn it in.

For example, Bose offer firmware updates for their QC headphones to reduce the noise cancelling and therefore make the 700 series look more appealing. And of course the latest firmware isn't downgradable.

EPROM is how BIOS's used to be stored. They were only erasable using ultraviolet light through a sticker covered window on the top of the chip. They were socketed so that they could be removed and placed in a device called a "burner" that you used to transfer the code to write to the chip. EEPROM are electrically erasable (do not have the window) a form of NVRAM (non volatile). Some PCs originally had sockets that also allowed the use of EPROM stored operating systems. You could have DOS and GWBASIC/IBMBASIC on them eliminating the need to boot from a floppy disk.

Stop with the clickbait titles. Put Firmware in the title. I thought this video would be about electricity or something - the title is very vague

Regarding laptop bios update, it is not possible to update the bios before plugging in the power adapter, because you get a warning window that says you have to connect the power adapter, or similar text. however on new laptops I have seen it

A button placed somewhere strategically on whatever device you are using at that time. These buttons signal gerbils to turn the wheel that gives the aforementioned device, whatever it may be, power to turn on. The gerbils them self are powered by lettuce. Just don't forget the lettuce.

Some older electronics run purely on switches (transistors) and logic gates without firmware. An example of this would be some old timers (555 timer ic)
