Lucky for him I had a spare computer for him to use while I was reinstalling his. Moral of the story: a few minutes of patience could save you, or your techie friend, a few hours of work. Please do try to avoid turning off your computer when it is updating. Like improperly handling a knife, you may get away with it many times. You may never ever be punished for it. @@moosa1461 Yep, permanent Startup Repair Loop. No solution since it was the OS itself that was fucked. I WAS able to save my files, new hard drive and salvaged everything important by combing through the corrupted mess as an external drive. Always remember: If your files are biffed and it looks like there's no way out, all you need is a laptop to salvage your old files and a new drive. If you already own a laptop, you can get a newer, probably-better hard drive for like 80 bucks, just bite the bullet. Save yourself the headache.

As a technician, and thus someone who sees far more broken system than working ones, I might be a little biased negatively against windows update. That being said, it usually is able to recover from power loss during an update. Though, sometimes, I've seen systems have a power loss while supposedly non-critical updates are being applied in the background that required an OS reinstall. In general, just don't cut power.

My brother shuts down his PC every time upon an update. His PC originally never gets past them so he just shuts it down and windows is like "okay cheif ill let it slide this time"
@blahorgaslisk77633 жыл бұрын
As an IT tech I see that as an indication that windows doesn't work as intended and needs some attention. Usually I am able to fix these kinds of problems given time, but most of the time it would have been faster to just reinstall the OS. This breaks down when your OS heavily modified and has so many tweaks to make it work the way you want it to that you can't begin to recall just what all those tweaks were. Personally I'm a packrat. I hoard utilities and tweaks so it's hard to see where one tweak ends and another starts. This forces me to really take care to keep the OS running as a reinstall would be disastrous for my user experience. Sure I would eventually get back to something workable, probably even better, but I hate to go through the pain. The record was a WinXP installation that I used every day for about ten years. No reinstall ever, and it was still really snappy and well behaved after all that time. Well as snappy as it could be on five years old hardware. Yes I migrated that installation from a previous system. Only reason I gave it up was that MS stopped providing important upgrades and some new programs wouldn't run on a 32 bit OS any more...
@kensmith56943 жыл бұрын
@@blahorgaslisk7763 Its just easier to switch to Linux, isn't it.
@blahorgaslisk77633 жыл бұрын
@@kensmith5694 I've dabled with Linux since the first kernel was released, but never got real fond of it. I was a UNIX admin for several years deploying and servicing Unix installations for customers using these to run commercial applications, and am certified, or at least I was certified for Unix System V and AIX version whatever, can't remember. But for some reason Linux strokes me the wrong way. I think it's the many elitists you encounter who blows people off unless they can hack together a Linux from Scratch system in less than a couple of hours. Is it strange if people are put off when they are met with the attitude that if you don't know how everything works then go pound sand? If they knew then they wouldn't be asking, and if they are asking then they are trying to learn. That and the huge diversity of distributions. Sure they are all GNU Linux, but they are often also very different from each other. I had customers running everything from pure Red Hat to CentOS to Ubuntu to LFS and who knows what else. And then there were Solaris. BSD and all the other Unix based operating systems. It seemed like every time they got stuck their system was just different enough that it took hours just to figure out just what the difference was that kept the "standard" solutions from working on their machine. So while everybody is heaping praise over Linux for it's diversity and flexibility it's exactly that I find frustrating. With Windows there is one OS I have to learn to support and it looks and works almost exactly the same on workstations as on servers. With Linux and Unix based operating systems there are probably at least ten major distributions and countless special versions I can run into all just slightly different from each other. Don't get me wrong. Linux and Unix are great. But the diversity makes it darn hard to provide support for the customers who use them. If I could concentrate on one or two versions it might have been OK, but not the hundreds there are now.

Of course, you're also assuming the sudden power loss to the hard drive(s) during active use didn't damage or corrupt them. But, we're agreed: Generally, an unnecessary (relatively low) risk except for when an Update hangs (I tell customers to give it at least 4 hours since we've had some slower machines take that long to process larger updates [assuming they have the time that they can wait]).

One of the most common cases when your pc shuts down mid-update in my opinion is the antimalware executable corruption. It boots up "normally" until you see that your RAM is being used 90% by a windows task called antimalware executable and it has a fairly easy way to troubleshoot. You can either do A.- Go into Task Scheduler and find it and disable that task or B. - Do he LTT way of troubleshooting method (no, not kicking your PC) and just use restoration.

Not much. However, if you shut off your computer repeatedly before Windows has time to complete the updates, eventually Windows thinks that there is an issue and will sometimes revert your computer back to factory defaults (seen that happen twice so far). But if you do it once or twice, generally it will try again to update the next time you shut down or reboot your computer.

only if the files are not protected, windows by default to be faster use a permission system that just marks a file as "Protected" but its the windows itself that will read "oh this file is protected i will not open it" thats why linux can read but if you use a proper protection with encryption bitlocker etc linux will not be able to open/touch the files at all so it really depends if the person use the fast system, that don't protect the files at all and just "Flags" then, or use a proper system like the windows bitlocker or whatever other software taht does similar thing. linux protection by default is encryption if the user enables of course.
