Basically, if you have an old device, and the old driver works fine on your device, then most of the time you don't need to update (unless if the driver don't support your windows version, for example), I just updated my intel UHD drivers and there are instances where the desktop window restarted itself. There was a horrible bug with Synaptics (and I think also Elan) drivers in 2014 or so. Instead of getting focus when clicking a window, it would LOSE focus. The only way to fix it was to close all other windows so that clicking windows gets it focused again. Uninstalling the driver does make the bug go away, but you lose stuff like one finger/two finger scrolling. I don't think I've had a laptop with Precision drivers yet, but I'm sure there's less complexity if the touch device was built according to Microsoft's Precision Spec.

As soon as I revert to the previous driver - everything works flawlessly. For that reason, I never update. Bad experience. Depends from card to card, and update to update. I'll give you some statistics: Heroes and generals: from single digit FPS to 40-50 GTA 4: from 10 to 30 FPS. Another instance: from 0 (crash to desktop, no error window) to 30 FPS. Cyberpunk 2077: from 10-15 FPS with windows 7 RTX implementation to 45-60 FPS with windows 10 rtx implementation. Mind you, both were 1080p extra maximum settings You're probably used to the usual 0fps gained by regularly updating. It's a lot more noticeable when you update your friends laptop that was never updated since it was purchased 2 years earlier. Tends to go from 'crashes' to 'smooth sailing'

I had, fortunately, recently backed up the critical data but had to reinstall the OS and machine control software. IT dept said, "Here are the 3.11 floppies, good luck with all that!" and the machine software was about 12 floppies that were stashed in the bottom of the machine. That part was actually pretty easy. The driver for the ancient Epson dot matrix printer was a different animal, and 100% necessary for our use of the machine. That took a few days of searching the internet and more than one attempt with a driver that did not work. I forget how or where I found the driver, but my boss told me that my quest was surely hopeless before I succeeded.

Windows 7 laptops on 8750H with a 1660 Ti, limited DirectX 12 for Windows 7 with DXR support if not Vulkan 1.2, or on the Desktop side-Windows 7/11 build with a single Ryzen 2700x technically supported on both systems, just add a TPM and switch Secure Boot on and off between Windows 7 and 11 drives. Windows 7 SATA SSD-Windows 11 NVMe with RAID on.

Before slapping a new driver on there you should definitely take the time to check what issues were fixed and what known issues are present for a new driver, and as long as they either improve or will not negatively impact your experience you're all good!

Always make a disk image of your system disk-usually C:-before updating drivers. Since you want to do that before the monthly Microsoft Windows etc update anyway, that's a natural time to check drivers if you want to. I very rarely update drivers-exception being if I add a new piece of hardware. I guess everyone needs to learn the hard way "Leave drivers alone unless you have a known reason to update them". This also applies to graphics card updates, since they often break some game or other. Drivers are hardcore software, one of the most likely to glitch when changed. This truly is a case where "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" should be taken seriously. If you do need a driver, in order of preference get it from: 1. Part maker-eg Nvidia, Intel, AMD; 2. Assembly maker-eg EVGA, Dell; 3. Microsoft. Nothing wrong with 2 or 3, just that 1 will have the latest driver sooner, and 2 will have it before 3.

I wouldn't recommend updating everything all at once, if you run into an issue it can make it difficult to troubleshoot the cause. Ideally you should install drivers one at a time and test for stability before installing another. I was reminded of this the hard way a year ago when I decided to update my Windows 10 from 1903 to 2004 I also updated my graphics/chipset/audio/LAN drivers and BIOS all in one go without testing them individually, afterwards I started experiencing regular crashes after a while when playing games. Troubleshooting this was annoying where I reverted to my old GPU drivers and then older chipset drivers & BIOS to no avail and eventually just gave up on Windows 10 2004 reverting back to my 1903 backup (which I'm still on now) which retained my previous drivers (which had the latest audio & LAN drivers I had installed before updating Windows) with no crashing. Since then I've updated to the latest BIOS and GPU drivers but have remained on the same chipset and Windows 1903 build, might be about time I should try updating them again.

the fastest ssd's write at 5GB/s DDR4 can do 25GB/s. That said you probably are using your SSD as ram with a Pagefile if using Windows or swap space if using linux. If you start to max out your RAM windows will move part of it that aren't being accessed a lot to a pagefile which will free up some ram until it needs to pull the info back into ram to be used again.

If my 'gameready drivers' aren't updated sometimes certain games just start crashing... when they never did before. It never made any sense to me. If I was playing them offline entirely the game wouldn't even know about driver updates- but even when the game itself doesn't update still I have issues. I have 28 or so years experience in the tech industry and I still have no idea why.
@flameshana9

My guess would be because other components are getting updated all the time and the game depends on both those and the gpu drivers to play nice together. So as soon as one changes all the others need to be updated to match.
@polydynamix7521

@@flameshana9 But, from Nvidia's own description of the 'game ready drivers'- the updates are meant to include new hardware and games released since the last update. It isn't even supposed to be changing things on existing hardware- that should fall back on the hardware drivers themselves for each individual component. You might be right, but it's still pretty weird.

Old wireless drivers are one of the most common causes of wireless networking problems. WIFI4, WIFI5 and WIFI6 devices and drivers came out long before the standards were even ratified, and leverage increasingly advanced and complex protocols and signal processing. Early drivers often either implement standards wrong, or just weren't very good at it. If you have a WIFI6 (ax) network interface, you probably need to update your drivers - the whole industry is still figuring out how to optimize the new standard.

I have an older card. I tend to not update drivers because it often breaks old things that worked. I get annoyed when devs make a game automatically shutdown if it detects older drivers. It's like... just let me decide if I want to take the risk that things might be glitchy or not. Don't make that choice for me because you think I'll somehow blame you if there's graphical artifacts or crashes. I'd rather have the ability to take the chance than have it complete shut off. Nvidia doesn't always make new game ready drivers that work properly still for older cards. Sometimes it's fine, and sometimes it's not. With newer stuff, I'd often update drivers though, but even then, some driver versions get botched and you see advice that you should skip them.

I suffered from random black screen crashes on my Vega 64 for 2 years, nothing solved it. Repasted, underclocked, ran at -50% power, replaced PSU, reinstalled windows many times and nothing worked Then one day I installed a 2017 version of the drivers and it has been smooth sailing ever since for months now. Some newer games have a bit lower fps but prefer the stability. I was so close to buying a new GPU that wouldn't have even been a big upgrade with these current prices, so I would've paid twice as much as I paid for my vega 3 years ago to basically have an equally good GPU or spend even more if I wanted a slight upgrade. I'm so glad I tried the old drivers

If I have a good running driver and there aren’t any new game drivers that are necessary, I read the release notes and see what’s changed, been fixed or updated. If there’s nothing helpful for me I’ll usually err on the side of caution and stick with my current driver. It’s nowhere near as bad as it used to be, but having major issues after a driver update used to be a common thing.
