My favorite part of learning about these was that the cerbras chip actually had to INCREASE their yield because of the error count. There too much of the chip dedicated to error bypass, and in v2 they used like 2% of what they planned for errors previously.

you know, anything less than the highest tier cpus on the market, have dead cores, (ie, a 6 core cpu has 8 cores and 2 are dead or disabled) nothing new really. One thing that bugs me though is why they don't sell the odd number core counts as is as lesser models of the one above, (ie, a 5 core entry level i5/r5, look they even match!)

I feel like this is missing one important thing(or rather, misinforming about it) - how they handle defects in WSE2. Because there is no waste due to manufacturing errors with WSE. They know they won't get a perfect wafer-sized chip, so they basically built in the tech to disable a few (hundred/thousand) cores, giving them a basically perfect yield of functioning chips. So while other chips have to get thrown out because they're just broken, with WSE they just route around the defects and still get their tens of thousands of cores.

These big wafer-scale CPUs you guys are talking about don't really have the same problems consumer-grade CPUs like Ryzen do when it comes to yields... Every individual core is wired in such a way that it can easily be disabled without much impact to performence, the only downside of that approach is that you can not cherrypick your chips .

Thats not a desktop PC. For all its amazing computing power, its not actually faster than your desktop cpu for everyday tasks you might run (like browsing the internet, watching youtube, playing games, running photoshop). Its made to run lots of task parallel. Like servers. Think gpu. Gpu's have hundreds or thousands of (more or less specialized) cores. Im guessing that the cores in this cpu are more general purpose than the ones in gpu's (thats why its so big)... Or that was my understanding. I admit i didnt listen all that closely the video.

Riley has taken over TechQuickie AND ShortCircuit!? Move over, LMG, there's a new player in town! ;) (Great video, guys. Though I'm kinda disappointed that you went as far as to put a knife and fork around the wafer, with not a single mention of Dr. Cutress' love of chips. Ah well. His video on this monster over at TechTechPotato has me covered.)

Yea got to mention that, the wafer scale engine has the highest yield rate of any chip of 1 to 1. Since there are a lot of backup cores within the silicon.

when is LTT testing this CPU? Now THAT would be an EPIC VIDEO. Stress test it for us to see if it's worth it. Then tell us the RIDICULOUS PRICE like usual. Could end up in the SH!T Manufacturers Say segment. still would be an epic video

I would love to know what makes this possible or at least viable now when it wasn't before. I understand that ship defects are an invitability so is there some type of error correction that allows them to do this? Have they managed to shrink the size of each chip relative to the entire die that they just run a full die as a chip and bypass the faulty chips? Or have the error rates gotten to a point where the occasional full die can have no errors when they are binned? I would love to know what makes this the best option now when until now we've seen alternative methods for current data centre needs. Thanks for another awesome video!

Increased demand for supercomputers. You can get the same result by throwing (more) discrete chips at it, with the upside that those chips can be useful for other applications. This thing? It's more power and space efficient yeah but if you make an extra 10k units it's not like you can sell them off for heated gamer moments or pushing snaptagram feeds.
