I am strangely happy that more people support piracy than DRM
@IkBenBenG9 жыл бұрын
Emx2000 Piracy gives users the software they want, for free, with an easy, short and reliable installation procedure. Software installed in this manner also keeps working if your internet fails. DRM can be a mayor annoyance to people because it makes the installation procedure longer, more complicated, and more likely to fail. And in the case it fails, you'll have to contact support for weeks to get it to work. And if after the installation your internet fails, then the software may not even let you use it. Besides, software with DRM usually contains other bloatware that adds background processes that make your computer slower, and the main program will refuse to work without those background processes. When you have pirated the software though, then you won't need those background processes and you only use the software you need. I almost never pirate stuff since I prefer doing things the legal way and I prefer using freeware software over cracked software, but if something comes with DRM that really annoys me, then I'm always tempted to give piracy a try. Since all popular software gets pirated anyway, DRM really serves no other purpose than annoying people who obtain things the legal way. Now, are you still surprised that people hate DRM and love pirating?
@snackman945 жыл бұрын
I think piracy is the wrong word. If you're just stripping away the DRM to play on other devices, like to play content from a Blu-Ray on a Roku, you're not stealing anything. However, if you share the content with your friends, and they share it with their friends ad infinitum, then that's a different story. By the way, the DMCA was amended in 2013 to allow you to break DRM for personal use.

When your DRM requires me to go out of my way to use what I bought, that's where it crosses a line. *Piracy is a service issue.* It's a result of people being unable (or unwilling) to get what they want legally. People want media and they will gladly pay for it. Before Steam, I used to torrent games all the time. Since Steam, I haven't even considered torrenting a game. Why? Because Steam makes getting games easier. Companies need to realize that they are not going to win against pirates and trying to stop them isn't going to work.

TheTundraTerror The same thing with music back in the day! Regular stores (pre amazon mind you) didn't always have the CD of that one obscure musician you wanted, and even if all you wanted was one song, you had to buy a whole CD for +$10. Napster and Limewire offered the better service. You could find the most obscure stuff on there, even some cool indie stuff like "A Stroke Of Genie-us". Then iTunes came and destroyed the piracy options, even though piracy was free. It was a safe and convenient place to buy, rip, play all your music, and it made organizing your music easier as well. It was just a much better service at the time.

If you try to bypass the DRM, your license expires. If you try to watch it on uncertified hardware, your license expires. If you hit the record- or rewind-button on your remote, your license expires. If you don´t accept the use of your personal data for commercial purposes, your license expires. If you don´t grant access to the TV-Webcam, Microphone and GPS sensor, your license expires. If you look away while ads are visible, your license expires. If your internet connection is lost, your license expires. If i had for instance a game studio (i am studying programming) i would rstrain drm to the level that a one-time verification with an account is required. Pirates will always eventually break the lock and legit users shouldn`t have to complicate themselves with 30-word verification sentences that have to be introduced three times in different order all while reading out loud captcha to the computers. Most pirates would not afford or not consider the game worth the price anyway, so we could even publish a cracked version ourselves, asking the player to purchase the game if he enjoys it at startup. Yet there would need to be a crack, if you can`t install a crack, you don`t deserve to play the game for free.

In the case of Denuvo DRM, such as that used in Batman: Arkham Knight PC versions, it can also be downright *_harmful_* to the end user's machine! Denuvo has been known for solid state drive thrashing: Users looking at the read/write details for "Lords of the Fallen" a game that also uses Denuvo found that the DRM system was using "150000 copy/write iterations" in an hour. The user describes that as being "10000 times more than usual." For those that don't know, SSDs have a limited number of Read/Write cycles, and as such, any program that uses a very high amount of these will lower the lifespan of this hardware, whilst usually this isn't too much of an issue with newer SSDs, older models have significantly short lifespans and as such, a program using this many writes will very quickly render the memory blocks of an SSD unusable. Courtesy of the Escapist forums.

The best way to keep people from pirating your stuff is by making it easier for them to acquire. Otherwise, people will just pirate the content instead of dealing with the hassles of DRM. Speaking of this, I haven't bought any music in over 10 years. I haven't pirated it either, but every time I want to buy an album, I can't figure out how to do it without going through some other BS service that I'd have to pay for as well. I don't want to stream it, I want to own it. If I can't do that legitimately, then the only option left is to pirate it. So instead, I just don't listen to music. the answer is simple 1-companies: remove that DRM coz it makes the life of the payers harder or just make an always online MMO that is completely free (like World Of Tanks) and innovate a way that makes the single players pay and be happy paying 2-gamers: please boycott the games that are bugged with always online DRM to force devs to remove it. personally i will never think about buying ubisoft's the crew or the division or any EA game especially that my internet speed just sux 3- in fact pirates help u expand the game community so that it can be sold widely which will definitely give the devs more money than annoying always online DRM. i'll give an example, my experience with WOT blitz (ipad version of WOT) is that i played it completely for free for 3 months and got many tier 10 tanks then i needed to expand my garage so i paid then wanted a premium tank so i paid then wanted to expand my garage again so i paid. the sum of all what i paid was nearly a 100$ (which is more than the price of most of epic games) on a good but not epic game and i was completely satisfied and enjoyed every cent i payed. after that i thought i could've bought 2 epic pc games for the same money just because i hated the team based results of a multiplayer game with a totally random not-skill based battles which usually matched me with people who have deficient brains so ruined my stats. so i decided that i need more single player games (that i can play anywhere). to cut long story short wargaming company was brilliant in selling their titles (WOT, blitz, World of warships) by expanding their community with a free enjoyable game then asking them to pay (if they want) to get premium features with giving them the taste of these premium features for free every monthly update and on other occasions. of course many people play it for free forever ,enjoy it and feel grateful to WG and of course many people pay. and of course WG had a much more profit than ubisoft with DRM and WITHOUT ANNOYING THE PAYERS. i want to see such an experience in a single player game that i can play anywhere, to do this u need some brilliant ideas that is not always online DRM. a nice brilliant idea is to completely remove the software protections that are completely usless and just annoy the payers (Ubisoft did it once as i remember). so my conclusion: game developers Blame urselves not the pirates.

I would sign up to Lynda.com but their Australian page charges ~$100 more per year compared to the US version (after doing the exchange rate calculation). And they don't offer monthly plans here any more. Plenty of good stuff on Google and KZbin anyway.

Piracy is a solution to the service problem that DRM introduces, not a pricing problem as most digital distributors want to believe it is. It's much more counterintuitive than it should be.

If I pay for something I pay for it because I want it and I want to support the person who made it. If I pirate something I probably just don't want to go to the hassle of buying it, don't care enough about it to pay, and/or think the people producing the thing are making enough money off of people who arent pirating. I love entertainment. I find myself hating art-theft, and believe artists should be compensated/credited for their work, but I pirate music and tv shows from large-scale companies often. Is that bad?

I'll be honest here. I've found ways to copy all my CDs and DVDs on to my plex server for home use. But It wasn't hard to do, there's freeware out there that can decrypt the media on discs for you anyway. I have no intention of distributing this media, it's only for personal use / streaming and rescuing damaged DVDs.

I recently bought an HP printer, and they were pushing the idea of never running out of ink by having the printer order cartridges online when the ink ran out. The idea was to pay "by the pages per month" and there would always be a new cartridge in the mail when you needed it. But I read the fine print before ordering that option, and it's a good thing I did, because the retail store clerks knew nothing about this loophole: If you have no internet connection to reach their server, the printer will print NOTHING! Signing up for this "service" means that the printer is PERMANENTLY programmed to refuse to print ONE PAGE of your OWN data, no matter how much ink, paper, power and wi-fi connection to your printer you have, unless it can verify your account! They don't even have a provision to "remember" how many pages you printed offline and update the charges when you reconnect! Also, some users have rumored that the company has the ability to spy on everything you print. I don't know if that is true, but the technology would certainly be feasible. So, if you buy one of their printers, just turn down the offer and buy your ink at the nearest retail store, or by mail order when YOU want to buy it. You can't get out of that program either, as long as you own that printer.

Yea printing companies also have a way of embedding prints with individual serial coding now identifying which printer something was printed on. Discreet black pixels so small the eye can't detect in random places on the paper make for a kind of morse code which can be read with a type of scanner. Essentially printing up something like asking people to vote for the candidate of your choice could end up with you being executed in silence. It sounds like they've come up with an even more sophisticated method with what you're saying though, but both are probably in play at the same time

I think that if prices get low enough Piracy will be redundant, for example if new games come out at 30 dollars, people would rather buy a game than bother pirating it. also maybe the pricing should differ per country, 60 dollars may not seem a lot in the US, but that's a lot of money for people in third world countries and poor countries. A father can give his kid 60$ to buy a game in the US, Germany, Canada, but in countries like India, Brazil, Egypt etc... it's unlikely that they can afford to buy a game every couple of weeks, every one can pay that initial price to get a gaming PC, because you only have to pay it once, but to spend approximately 400-600$ a year to get games is quite expensive. but the way these companies are fighting pirates, does nothing but encourage them, and encourage paying customers to pirate the game just so they don't have to deal with DRM.
@zackunderdown97139 жыл бұрын
the argument that without DRM piracy would be a bigger deal seems kind of shaky to me. i very much doubt that the people responsible for cracking DRM and then making said files available are the types who care much about whether its restricted or not. im pretty sure that since most pirated material is available free (whether illegal or not) shows that making money is not always the pirates goal. also since DRM is usually broken so quickly (ive seen pirated copies of games listed before they came out legally) it seems like the very notion of a company putting the time and effort (and money) into making DRM is only going to impact the legitimate user. anyone who is willing to pirate it in the first place like you said wont have that problem

DRM is one of the reasons why I play almost only Indie games. I want to pay them for the game. But when I would be afraid of some technical shit (DRM), which could slow down my pc or disable the game, I am not going to buy the game and mostly play it at all.

So here's what happened to a country with poor internet connection, and where buying a legit game is quite a luxury : - Bought Assasin's Creed II on steam sale - Download the game for almost a week - Install the game - Download Uplay for another few more hours - Install Uplay - Create Uplay account - Play game And when you're about to play the other day : - login to steam which took few minutes and click play - login to Uplay and took another few minutes Just lost my appetite to play, and won't bother pirating it, since I don't think it's going to worth the effort. Just take it I gave Ubisoft a donation with my hard earned money :).

I wont say I did it because who knows who's watching, but before Netflix came to New Zealand, illegal streaming was common place. Now it is only common place for movies that are not on Netflix. (or lightbox or whatever the other streaming competitor is. Neon I think?) The best way for companies to fight piracy is to make there content affordable and easy to access, because if it's not those things, someone will make it those things, and they wont be pay royalty fees. It's the same with Steam, and Google Music (and yes, itunes, but I really hate apple, so, I didn't say that)
@randomaccount537939 жыл бұрын
Yea, me an many people used VPN's to watch Netflix (which was technically illegal), now that they finally have Netflix in NZ (although not the full one) I don't have to pay for that VPN service and can actually pay for NZ Netflix, region locking is so stupid and is the reason why I've pirated anything here. Finally they broke the Sky TV (skynet) monopoly and I can finally watch shit without buying a whole lot of unessisary crap from Sky. Also I like steam DRM (most of the time) because it acts as a backup and syncs my accounts from different computers, we need more of that! Steam has made a compelling reason to choose them over others, I'm not forced into it, that makes it good DRM (shockingly).

I like Steam's method. You need internet to download it anyways, so it authenticates when downloading and then lets you live freely. If you need to copy it to a PC without internet access, you can request authentication options from Valve to do an offline auth.

Honestly, if i was to create a digital product, Song/program/picture etc, i wouldn't care if it got shared around by someone who bought it or not. Honestly its free publicity, and can cause more people to buy more copies later on.
@pjpeej139 жыл бұрын
Koketsune Haya But down the line, the free publicity will gather more people to pirate your product. Now, yes, technically there are people who will legally buy the product. Whether that's due to lack of pirating knowledge or due to a will to support the creator is debatable. However, there are just as many people willing to obtain your product for free. Because they can. Here's an example. In high school, I was the guy who could install games on graphing calculators. At first, I just did it for free, getting my name out there. Once people knew I did it, I charged around 5 bucks for a game pack (like 7 games). At first, people bought it. Then suddenly I had no one coming to get the games. I asked around, and found out that people were just getting it from other people. No one wanted to pay. No one credited the original distributor. Publicity is awesome, but means nothing without a reason to buy. Piracy negates a reason to buy. Now, I understand this is a very different situation. Large scale publicity brings in a much larger group of people, of which some would actually still pay on a moral ground. But the fact remains, that the average joe doesn't care about you making money. Cause someone else will pay. They just want the most convenient way to get it FOR THEM. The fact is, pirating isn't a community of perfect people with perfect motives. Many of these people aren't satisfied with just downloading for themselves. Some will sell it themselves, trying to make a profit off of your product. Still others wish to claim it as their own. This can be seen especially with freelance photography. People remove signature marks on photographs and reupload them as their own, making money that, arguably, the photographer would make. Perhaps the pirater is accessing a community that the photographer wouldn't have had access to, but the fact remains that the photographer has all legal ownership to it. In fact, there are plenty of legal distributors that do this for you. TL;DR The concept is great. The people who actively use and distribute the content aren't.
