this doesnt get classifiesd as NAS, its just a hdd connected to a router and to be a bit more precise since its a home wifi router its actually a SOHO switch, and most importantly almost every modern hdd's have a built in spin down logic, and because a router cannot send the write or read messages as clear as a pc can once it gets in to the spin down logic you will have to physically unplug and plug the hdd back in.

@@TechSceneZA i get your point, but remember theres a reason why there are NAS specialised OS's. when you use a wireless router and a hdd to set up a nas, how long do you think it would take to access your personal files through a backdoor? just by using wireshark and metasploit? or even just nmap and hashcat.

The short answer is it is safe because it is on your LAN(local area network) so as long as your wireless/wifi is secure and your own network is secure then its safe, but if your wifi is open or has a simple password that can be guessed then these vulnerabilities can be accessed

firstly this isnt as efficient and as productive as A NAS is. if you actually just sit and think, if this was a optimal way if making NAS networks they wouldnt have invented specific hardware for it in the first place. check your hdd write priviliges and if it still persists, firmat your hdd to NTFS and try again.

Yes, but is it fast enough or is it better to use a QNAP? I got the ASUS ax89x for the 10 gig port thinking to use it for a QNAP Nas but thinking it’s unnecessary seeing the USB ports are 3.2 and you get 10 gb thru-put anyway. I should preface that I’ll be using it to edit 4K video over the nas.

instead if using a router for a nas setuup rsther go with an actual nas based os, like free nas, its deeicated to nas and a lightweight os so it gives about 98% of your port speed to the client side aswell, and the best part with free nas you can still attach it to an actual windows or ubuntu server without having to recinfigure port clashes and subnet mask arrangements etc. literally setup and link to a swithc and use however as youd like

I've been searching but I haven't found people talking about accessing a NAS wirelessly for video editing. (their answer is right away "why would you do that?) The thing is right now I have a NAS directly plugged with LAN cable to my main editing computer, (I get 120 MB/s which is enough for my videos) but I would love to edit from my laptop as well without cables. I'm planning to get a Dual-Band Wi-Fi Router hoping I can configure it as a switch and also use my laptop thru WIFI to access video files/etc. But I'm not sure if the speed is enough for editing. I'll be happy with 120MB/s (gigabyte speed) over wifi. -- Modern routers offer 1300 mbps so in theory should be enough. from NAS --> LAN cable to --> Dual band Router --> then another LAN cable from router to --> main PC + (Router ---> dual-band WIFI to my laptop) would the router work as a switch? would WI-Fi give me at least 120 MB/s speeds? do I make any sense? --- Thanks a lot.
@TechSceneZA
@TechSceneZA 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bing Bang Apologies for the delayed response, yes you make sense 1.Yes the modem will work as a switch as the 4 LAN ports on the back are a grouped and preform as a switch 2. although the modem wireless is capable of offering 1300 mbps that is on an open area with zero interference, so its depending on the layout of your home & its build material , the positioning of your router and where you're sitting in retrospect to the router, but you're most properly going to be editing on a table so if the wireless doesn't work you can run a cable for when you're editing and then put the cable away and its also not like you're moving around when editing

@@TechSceneZA I invented a MacGyver way now they my router decided to do an update and removed the file sharing features, and there's no space on the on board storage to add them back manually. I just took an old beat up android phone, attached the external hard drive to it via otg, and made a DLNA server with Bubbleupnp. Hi Oliver Javier , i would sincerely like to apologize for the delayed response you might be able to hook it up to the Router , but if the drive uses external power the routers tend not to work correctly.i will suggest buying a proper Network attached Storage solution in a case like this instead of trying to connect a drive to the router

Don't take offense, but it's not NAS. This type of hard drive is not designed to work for even a few hours. They are for storage only, otherwise the beasts become hot and damaged. I need a disk with an adapter and tolerable cooling, and the routers can't provide much current to their USB port. With a router at most you can make an FTP server and a media server. They themselves offer this extra.
