I think I like the physical buttons too, but I really dislike the overall design. It is pretty awkward to hold, slippery with a narrow grip. That said I think I think the design direction is better than the touch, but still needs improvement.

Great review. I was given the oasis as a gift several weeks ago and I truly do love it. I have a 10th generation paperwhite that I thought was great but the oasis straddles over the top of that old fence and really steps into a more refined and enjoyable experience. The real beauty of the oasis screen for me was discovered when I used it to read under an incandescent light source. The font was truly razor sharp and indistinguishable from an actual paper page.

I've been using the Kindle Oasis since March and the Paperwhite 4 for the previous couple of years prior to that. I take long motorcycle trips, road trips, whatever I want. The Oasis' battery is not something I have to worry about. I can get through a few novels or more on a charge and not be concerned. I don't even turn off the backlight anymore, I just keep it on at level 11, with the warmth at 13 and I don't notice it being on while in direct light. The premium feel and large screen with small bezels made it a fantastic device and I highly recommend it to anyone. Then again, you can't go wrong with a Kindle period.

I got the latest Paperwhite last week as a birthday present. Compared to my previous Kindle (the discontinued Voyage) it’s a bit bigger and heavier. I read in bed and I find the Paperwhite ever so slightly too big (and I have pretty big hands). I miss the page turn buttons, but not that much, since they were hit and miss at best. The new lighting system is a deal breaker for me: the warm light is SO MUCH BETTER at night. So even if size-wise, the Voyage was better, the reading experience on the Paperwhite definitely gets the upper hand. Also, it looks like Amazon stopped updating the Voyage (15.4 is at the time of writing still not available), so I guess out with the old, in with the new.

I just upgraded to an Oasis 8GB during Prime Days (got a bundle with cover and charger brick). I had been using a 2014 Paperwhite, which was getting very slow and glitchy- I couldn't wait for any longer to replace it. So far I love the Oasis' larger display, warm lighting, case design, and best of all, the page turn buttons! I've been reading on a Kindle since the early days of the white keyboard model, so I loved those physical buttons. Set up was really easy using the Kindle app on my phone and I was happily reading in minutes.

The only thing that bothers me about the paperwhite is that it does not have physical buttons to turn the page. I have had the keyboard 3 for more than 10 years, which even has a keyboard. It is not tactile. But I find the buttons to turn the page comfortable. Do you get used to turning the page with the touch? I wanted to buy the Oasis but I didn't want to buy it and next month they will announce the release of a new edition...

@evan.5967 my older kindle had page turning buttons and I loved it. It was easier than turning a page in a real book. My paperwhite 11 doesn't and it is simply a pain to use. It will only let me turn page on the right side. So if I am holding lefthanded my thumb can't really reach over there. With either hand, I often end up hitting the screen in not just the right way, making it go backwards or bring up a menu. This happens fairly often and I've been using it close to two years. Maybe it's just me but I truly hate how the page turning functions.

I've owned Fires for years and only used them for reading, never thought about an Oasis until it went on sale during Prime Week. WHAT A GAME CHANGER! I like my kindle oasis, so much, simply because it doesn’t have a huge chin on the bottom and there’s no logo on it. It looks so premium and I love the buttons. But one fatal flaw for me is how wide it is, it is no longer pocketable. I want the newest paper white because even if it has the logo and chin on the bottom, it still has a small enough size to fit in pockets. I almost left my oasis behind in public twice already because I can’t pocket it. The increased battery life on the paper whites is greatly appreciated as well.

The Oasis is obviously due for an update. I imagine they'll introduce a new model by the end of the year. They'll probably update the entry level Kindle as well. Unless your old e-reader just died and you have to buy a new one right now, I'd hold off for a few months to see what they come up with.

I was surprised to see they phased out the battery case that was included with the last generation. I'm on the fence about just buying a new Oasis, or going with the signature edition. I disliked my first gen paperwhite because it was difficult to use one-handed and am worried I'd have the same issue with the signature edition.

After seeing the paperwhite and having used my Oasis for the last 2 years, my conclusion is that my favourite reading device is still my kindle Voyage. I still don't believe that Amazon replaced the Voyage with the oasis, just because a bunch of people could not live their lives without the physical buttons. The haptics of the Voyage and the form factor (fit in my pockets, which an oasis will never achieve), will always be my favourite kindle features. It seems that I will have to settle for a paper white in the future.

My Kindle Oasis is 3 years old now and the battery is terrible, it requires a daily charge just to read for between 1-3 hours a night. My wife's Paperwhite is more than double that age I estimate and it has no battery issues at all. Plus the Paperwhites battery is fairly easy to replace from what I've seen, the Oasis is impossible to replace the battery without breaking the screen. I'll be buying a Paperwhite soon, I'll miss my Oasis physically (I much prefer the chassis design vs the Paperwhite) but being unrepairable is a huge negative for me. The screen is still prefect and I've really looked after the Oasis but the battery is terrible, they should last longer than 3 years for £250.

As oasis 3 user and also got a new pw recently, the battery is actually pretty much better on new pw, but what I have thought of the new one is just extended battery life version pw4, I don’t appreciate the size becos it s a bit weighted even than oasis with case and it’s uncomfortable to hold by one hand. The screen is still grayish as the same, oasis3 is way more better on the screen and lighter. So the only big difference between pw5 and oasis 3 is battery imo. I wish you had talked about one of the main features of the Oasis far more: One-handed reading, which is a big reason to get it. It's far easier to hold the Oasis with one hand and use the physical page-turning buttons, which is how I prefer to use it. One-handed reading is much more difficult on other Kindles because of the lack of those buttons and the uniform design (the lip on the Oasis makes it easier to grip). Comparing battery life on Kindles is kind of pointless if you ask me. Either way, it's going to last you a very long time, even if you're a heavy reader like me, and you'll never have to worry about the battery running out mid-read unless you started the day at nearly empty battery.

Its 4GB storage is enough for me (if I ever come close to filling it, I could always delete read books from the storage as they stay in my Amazon account anyway). The only thing missing for me is the dark mode since my eyes are quite sensitive. But that‘s not worth spending the money for a new one. Sure the display and functionality is not up to the latest state of tech, but I don‘t mind. I think it‘s still quite nice to read on. If the device will ever give up on me, I think I would update to the current Paperwhite signature edition.

Love my Oasis. I do hope it doesn't get discontinued for whenever I'm ready to upgrade years from now. I do not understand why the auto-brightness works the way it does. E-Ink works great in direct light without lighting - it's kind of the point. You don't want the front light increasing when in direct light, it just drops the battery faster. I manually manage the lighting because the better your lighting, the more you DON'T need this.

I feel like I just want to wait until whatever the next Kindle model will be. Hopefully, it will be a color version like the Kindle app on my iPhone. Congratulations for the thorough review. However, tou keep repeating the same error: in sunlight or even in strong sunlight an eink front light is completely useless and redundant. It's the opoosite of an LCD or OLED screen. It mimics the experience of paper. Low light, use the front light. Well lit environment, switch off the front light.

Yeah, I was only half paying attention, but it sounded to me like he was alluding to them needing a bright backlight in sunlight like a cellphone with a regular LCD display or something... really weird. I have and the LED color rendition it's slightly different on either. Beyond that the grip with the buttons is something I cannot leave now that I'm here. It is so amazing to use it on the right hand and then switch to the left hand. You wouldn't think it would matter so much with a light device but holding something awkwardly for so many hours stinks. I traded in my oasis (last gen) for a Paperwhite today. It went from $140 to $104 for mother's day. On top of that, I got $75 trade in credit from Amazon and 20% off. All in all I ended up paying $15.92 and I feel way to savvy for my own good lol. I love the design aesthetic of the Oasis but I found that it's just uncomfortable to use. The metal edges dig into my palm and the aluminum back becomes slippery from the oil of my hands in just a few minutes of use. It's the most frustrating thing about it. It may not be a big deal to most people, but I get distracted far too easily and the whole point of buying a dedicated e-reader is to remove distractions.

Bobby I have the Oasis (latest) and I'm considering to buy the Paperwhite Signature as well for your very same reasons stated. Do you find the Signature more pleasant to hold in bed? @@jonchin2201 @Jonathan Chin Heres the thing about the Oasis imo, it's beautiful to look at but I always hated holding it. Because it's aluminum my hands would start to become slippery from the oil (if you use a case that's not a problem). I also found that the rim on the front edge would really dig into my hand when holding it. But what about page turn buttons? I really thought I would miss them, but honestly it hasn't made much of a difference. Modern Kindle os is built for touch and the buttons are kind of just added on after. But the thing for me that made me switch when I saw the deal I could get was the warm light which I didn't have before but you do. I would say that it's more comfortable than the Oasis with the trade-off that it's a little more heavy. With the Paperwhite I don't notice holding it like I used to with the Oasis. Take this how you will. If you really want the one handed thing it may be better to keep the Oasis but otherwise I would switch.

I want to buy one of these on Prime day tomorrow. I went to a local store to check them out. I love the way the Oasis feels in the hand. It is so balanced plus the buttons. However the Oasis screen had a lot of ghosting, like screen burn in, and the contrast didn't seem as good as the Paperwhite. The blacks on the Paperwhite looked darker while the Oasis screen looked washed out. They had them in some sort of demo mode so I couldn't play with brightness settings and the store lighting was very bright. Still not sure which to get.

I've owned the latest Paper White, the new basic 6" Kindle and 2 of the latest Oasis. I love the USB-C of the Paper White and the glass screen. The 6" new Kindle feels cheap with it's plastic screen and the battery wasn't great. The oasis is so much better with the turn buttons, it makes using it so much more comfortable. If you can afford it and don't mind the non USB-C charging get the Oasis. The Signature has wireless charging which is a waste of time as you hardly have to charge them anyway.

Not sure. I'm on my second or third paper white.. (old now... slow.. unreliable to charge I think the port is loose). Liking the idea of all but the cheapest $89 are larger screens 6.8 or 7". Page turning buttons is great.. or the Signature with wireless charging.. decisions decisions. Honestly if Amazon made their larger magazine sized version again I would get that. now that I'm older and starting to need glasses, fonts running larger I have to turn pages constantly or wear readers.. I would prefer the larger long discontinued format. which will I get? Oasis or Signature? Not sure.. oh and I think AT&T turned off 3g this year so the free cellular connectivity is gone in this part of US. Not sure what Oasis uses/used.

I have a feeling you were paid for expressing a positive opinion. How can you not see it? 4:55 A very important thing that you didn't mention, and on the basis of which I can say that the designer or originator of the light sensor was/is a moron, ignorant, and I'm even more irritated by the fact of paying people for such a fucked up job. As far as I know (or maybe I'm an idiot) in sunny weather the phone screen is poorly visible, the sensor turns up the lighting to the maximum to improve visibility - understandable. However, the ereader screen works completely differently, it is clearly visible in full lighting. When we move to a dark room, the sensor should work and brighten the reader so that we can read (unlike the phone where the sensor reduces the light intensity). Logical, but not for everyone. I can be an idiot, a moron or whatever. I'll take it on board. I bought the 32gb version because I don't like being restricted. The light sensor is such a forced addition, but if there is something, I require it to work sensibly, as intended. I understand that if I go out with the reader into the yard, it still needs to light up because it can't be seen on this type of screen?

I think I’m on my 5th Kindle. Once again I’ve started experiencing power issues and am reading books on my phone. I had the original Oasis but found that it never accessed the extra battery, and ran out of power too fast, and the new WiFi prevented connecting by cellular- if it detected a WiFi signal, i could not use the cellular connection. Since I did not have permission to connect to the detected WiFi, this was a problem and I found myself trying to find parking lots with no WiFi so I could download books. I replaced the oasis with a paper white, and for the first time did not pay for the cellular feature. I use it with my phone hotspot when I need to. Since my paper white no longer reliably turns on or reboots with a full charge, I’ve been reading on my smart phone. Besides not being able to purchase books directly to an Apple device, now I’m struggling with reader highlights. There is no way to remove the highlights. When every word on screen is highlighted, it is really difficult to turn the page. They have removed page scrolling from the other device app, and the highlights extend into the right margins. Not my highlights, don’t know why everyone else made the highlights, no way to clear them to get them out of the way. The last bitch I have is that the paper white is also missing the rotation feature, manual or auto. Really annoying if I’m trying to read and charge at the same time. I used to just rotate the device so the cord came out of the top and was out of the way. I think their battery tests are bogus and don’t reflect actual use. Sorry to dump on you, but there is no real customer feedback possible.
