Amazon is just ridiculous with ads. Paid extra to remove ads from Prime Video, and it still shows ads, but give you an option to skip it.

Its currently on sale for £80 and if you have an older model kindle you can trade it in for a further 20% off and voucher between £5 and £20 , bringing the cost down to £40-£55. Incredible deal. Edited to add: You can trade in multiple kindles to keep stacking the vouchers.

Isn't one of the key things about an e-ink display that the better the light, the better the experience? If you're outside I don't understand why you'd need to up the brightness - it shouldn't need any back/front lighting at all. Maybe I'm missing something with this particular device, but my kindle doesn't need any light when using it outside/in a well lit environment.

You're not missing something. Bafflingly, ereaders are now reflective. The old ones were fine in the sun, now you get glare but nobody else seems to say anything about it.

1:09 i never charged my Kindle at home to be honest, i always left that cable plugged in my workplace computer and just plugged it there during lunch and i never experienced running out of battery past 30%

I can't believe it's 2024, and the Kindle *STILL* has the power button on the bottom. In the exact spot your finger and hand rests so that every two minutes you accidentally turn the device off. At 2:07 I notice you holding it in your left hand, if you were to use your right, your pinky finger would be right on the power button. It seems ridiculously basic and obvious that the power button should be at the top, away from your hand and body. So you can rest it on a surface, your leg or body and read.

Spend a wee bit more for Kobo Clara BW. Kills Kindle in utility unless you want to restrict yourself to Amazon ecosystem.

Well the "screen brightness is enough for reading in bright sunlight" is a bit stupid in case of an e-ink display... In bright light theres no need for any screen brightness at all.

@@AA-px4dm Yeah, screens. But this is e-ink, it's like paper in direct sunlight, extremely readable without any backlight.

What do you mean by "still"? Kindle hasn't been the best option in many years. Primarily due to their software. The hardware is nice.

@@megamegaOI imagine they mean warm color/waterproofing/larger size, but that would defeat the purpose of it as the cheapest option. The version with ads goes for $85 right now and that can't really be matched by any of its competitors.

@@megamegaOkobo Clara BW is the same price as no-ads Kindle Basic, has a much better UI, built in overdrive (way better than tethering Libby with your phone), is waterproof and has warm lighting. The worst part of Kindle is it being a kindle. Edit: non-Americans can’t even use Libby with their kindle, so Kobo is just objectively better for most of the world.

Kindle fire is still cheaper, and colour - ok it's a bit of a chunk and it feels like it doesn't know what it wants to be! An e reader or a tablet? But worth a consideration if you are on a budget

They no longer sell the Oasis brand new. eInk displays are known to be very fragile. Autobrightness is awful feature.

I got an old Nexus 7 tablet in great condition from eBay for $20 last week. What is the selling point of these dedicated E-readers? My tablet has better performance, a color screen, and the ability to run lots of other apps in addition to Kindle. It seems to me like buying an old Android tablet and flashing newer software onto it (e.g. LineageOS) would be a better value.

LCD vs e-ink Display. 1 day vs 6 weeks battery life. Try reading on an LCD in bright sunlight in a park or sth. That's not fun 😅
