Pwm (pulse width modulation) and voltage modulation are two different fan control methods. Voltage modulation varies the fans’s supplied voltage from 0 to 12 volts to go from 0 to max rpm. Pwm uses an extra signal whereby the fan receives a constant 12v or 5v rail and an extra signal wire sends pulses to control the rpm. PWM is the more complicated of the two to implement but can’t say what effect it has on start-stop wear and tear.

Gigabyte is banging out good quality Gaming OC cards. My 2060S even being vertically mounted and 2cm away from glass side panel is really REALLY quiet under load with fans spinning under 2k rpm and staying under 70°C. Really surprised me and my cousin who had the 5700 one for a couple of weeks was wondering of the fans were even working in his PC (solid side panel so he didn't know) lol

PWM is 12v at all percent. It's just pulsed 12V. With 10% being 12v 10% of the time and 0v 90% of the time and 100% being just pure 12v. 3 pin DC voltage control would be something like 3v at 25%, 6v at 50%, 12v at 100% ect.

You have got your fan advice wrong. Voltage controlled fans change speed by changing voltage. PWM fans change speed by issuing pulses to the fan, always with the same voltage. So that 12V PWM fan is always using 12V, just pulsing more or less to control RPMs.
@cptcrogge4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, its always 12V with the extra "line" to set the speed.
@tusux29494 жыл бұрын
Which effectively lowers the average voltage. A 50/50 pulse would equal 6V input, 25/75 would be the same as 3V constant. It is just an easier way to control fans with software and you can smooth the transitions with gradually changing the pulse modulation, so the fans do not "whine" when the input suddenly changes. So he is not entirely correct but he is not wrong either.
@WayneWatson14 жыл бұрын
@@tusux2949 but it's still 12v. No effectively anything. It's a different method is all. The pulsing is actually worst for the fans. Basically cycling on and off all the time is worst than an steady stream of lower voltage
@tusux29494 жыл бұрын
@@WayneWatson1 The fans are designed to run at up to 12V and the power comes from the PSU which must be 12V with max deviation of 120mV to fit the ATX standard. In reality modern PSUs are within +_50mV. Its not like you are flipping a switch and suddenly there is a power spike of 20V+, these are identical discrete pulses and the input voltage is tightly regulated. It's not harmful in any way. As for the 12V - consider the fan a black box which takes in voltage and produces axial momentum. It also has fixed resistance since it is basically a coiled wire and a magnet. You feed it 12V constant for a minute. It runs at full power. If you feed it 50/50 square 12V pulses over another minute, it means you have used it for a total of 30 seconds and the other 30 it was off. Since it does not instantly stop spinning the moment you cut its power, if the pulses are short enough, it can run continuously with half the power input, albeit spinning slower as a result. Ta-da. The mean average voltage you used with that 50/50 pulse over a minute is the same as a 6V constant.
@WayneWatson14 жыл бұрын
@@tusux2949 I understand completely how it works. Been in electronics my entire life. Over 50 years of dealing with this stuff. It's still harder on them to have pulses than variable voltage. There is no advantage to pwm, as far as power savings, it's simply another way of controlling the rpm. It's DC, it will be 50/50 square wave all the time 😂. Ac is sine wave so, not sure what your attempted point there was. On/off pulses is like a light switch being turned on and off. More damaging

PWM does not work as you explain. The voltage stays at 12v at all times. The PWM clock signal tells the duty cycle (%) the fan should run at. DC regulated fans (3-pin) work as you explain. Also, the fans can actually handle >12v but usually around 10% above. There's some fans that deviate from this.
@CompproB2374 жыл бұрын
@@SISSYPUSS Wrong. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse-width_modulation FYI: You're talking to an electrical engineer. EDIT: The source voltage will always remain 12v in a PWM fan circuit. The PWM clock signal wire alternates between on and off, like binary, to simulate the duty cycle. This is voltage being turned on and off. Not current.
@TorstenSeemann4 жыл бұрын
@@CompproB237 but with no voltage/potential no current will flow, so you are essentially in agreement?
@@SISSYPUSS From that link I especially like this part: "Unlike linear voltage regulation, where the fan voltage is proportional to the speed, the fan is driven with a constant supply voltage; the speed control is performed by the fan based on the control signal."
@rogierx4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for testing and providing this information. Just remember that changing the voltage on fans has nothing to do with PWM. Pulse Width Modulation changes the speed with a fourth wire, without changing the voltage at all. This way, fans can change to much lower speed than in case you would just lower the voltage: they would stop spinning at some point. With PWM they can continue to slow down and make less noise.

Heads up for anyone buys the rev 1.0 recently. you might want to update the vbios to the newest one (2/7/2020) from gigabyte website (pretty easy and it takes less than 2 minutes). My friend had stability issues every time he cut the power completely from his pc it refuses to give out signal when he boots into windows no matter what we do (we tried numerous solutions). The vbios update did fix the issue at last.
@crumbman4 жыл бұрын
If you have a PWM fan your fan gets the 12V all the time. The difference is that if you run your fan at 40% the PWM controller delivers that 12V only for some time and cuts it off completely for the remaining time. It basically switches the fan on and off really fast. There is another controller directly on the fan that calculates the time frames were it needs to deliver the 12V to get the fan spinning at 40%. However this should not effect the life time of your fans.

I reflashed back to the old BIOS and it works again, but now I don’t have the extra power from the new BiOS

So, you don’t have to download and install graphic card drivers with this card?

Would anyone possibly have or advise where i can get the original bios for xfx RX 570 4gb xxx edition. I recently acquired 2 cards and would like to bring them back to factory default so i can also get rid of the error 43 message and not have to use the ati patch. Thanks in advance!

New GPU recommendation updates,, 1. RX 570 2. GTX 1660 Super 3. RX 5600 XT 4. RX 5700 XT 5. RTX 2070 Super Edited: Now something interesting pop up, kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4apg3Wkf8mrabs
@@dondraper4438 ...If you can even get a RTX 2060 at $300usd or if you are streaming. Otherwise the RX 5600 XT is a great deal. Would be great if AMD followed up soon with an RX 5600 to take on the GTX 1660 Super.

@@stevenlischer I can't recommed the rx 5600xt. Messing up when flashing vbios can absolutely brick your card. Also not all the cards are capable of running memory at the new "official" specs. I really can't recommend that card at all. It's one thing to be an Nvidiot, it's another thing when AMD sells you bios locked card and ships it with shit gddr6 to save a few pennies.
@dondraper44384 жыл бұрын
@@stevenlischer For $20 more you also get a card with no head aches and Nenvc encoding as well, because Navi h.264 encoding is still broken.

Yea, Asus has lost me forever. Their quality isn't there anymore, in anything they do. Too much crap they putting out and quality control issues.
