I’m helping my niece with school and when she needed help with fractions I panicked lol so I came to the youtubes and found this guy. He taught me in 5 minutes what many teachers back in the day tried to teach me, and failed miserably, in whole school years lol. Oh I’ll be back I promise

@@tecmath would it work with subtraction?
@psswim20013 жыл бұрын
@@insertnamehere5864 yes, you just have to subtract the two multiplications. So for example 1/4 - 1/3 will be (3-4)/12. So instead of adding 1x3 + 1x4 as seen in the video when adding the fractions, you only subtract them.

I agree with you Anthony. I call this video a good refresher for remebering fractions. I don't recall in any of my school maths classes any teacher say that fractions are meant to teach us logical thinking. School is only good to teach you to learn, expect yu to stay with the curriculum and if you want to really learn, seek help outof school, because school is their to create employees.

This method is still essentially the same as what I was taught at school with lowest common denominators (LCM) . In the first example, 12 *is* the LCM of 3 and 4. In the second, 15 *is* the LCM of 3 and 5. So I don't really see much difference here. It just bypasses finding the *lowest* common denominator and replaces it with the *easiest* one. This approach could then give you difficulty with for example adding sixths and thirds, the LCM of which is 6, but we would end up with a denominator of 18 and the result would need reducing.

When I saw this come up on my feeds I remembered being scared of maths as a kid, consequently being ridiculed by my mum and dad and teachers couldn't help as I was so scared to learn! I'm 45 now, and although I don't have to use much of this in my daily life, I'm going to try to teach myself again, and enjoy the practicals rather than be ruled by fear. Hope it helps the kids out there!

This works with relatively prime numbers in denominators. Let's say we have 1/14+1/6. We're going to try and make the denominators relatively prime. We choose the greatest common factor of denominators, 14 and 6, which is 2. We divide the denominators and the do the trick in the video. Then we multiply the denominators with the GCF again. Done. Example: 1/14+1/6 = 1/2 × (1/7+1/3) = 1/2 × *(3/21+7/21) --> the trick* = 1/2 × 10/21 10/42

'Don't worry about finding a common denominator, ' ...proceeds to establish common denominator
@divahc13 жыл бұрын
This is still using a common denominator. By multiplying the two denominators, they become the factors of the new denominator (which is their multiple). Then, when we do the cross-multiplying method of denominator and numerator, we are using the method of multiplying the numerator by the same number we by which multiplied the denominator. This is the principle behind the 'shortcut' shown here. This method means that you are using a common denominator, just not necessarily the lowest one. If you don't end up with the lowest common denominator (for example 4x6=24, which is a common multiple of both 4 and 6, but so is 12, and it's a lower number) you will need to simplify the fraction you get as your answer. To illustrate: find 3/4 + 4/6. Multiply 4 and 6, this gives you a denominator of 24. Now cross-multiply: 3x6 is 18, and 4x4 is 16. So now you'll have 18/24 +16/24 = 34/24 = 1 10/24. Simplify the fraction: 1 10/24 = 1 5/12. If we'd used the lowest common denominator you'd have had: 3/4 ÷ 4/6= 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12 = 1 5/12. So, here you can see, we end up withnthe same result, but in example 2, we have the denominator of 12 straight away. I tell my students, if you're in an exam and simply can't think of the lowest common denominator (LCM), then go ahead and use the cross-multiply method. It's not cheating, nor a short-cut. It's principals are the same as finding the LCM.

Can you use this style in fractions such as: 1/4 + 1/2 and 5/6 + 2/3 + 1/2 as on you tube page Let's do math Adding Fractions with Different Denominators Jan 13, 2018 What I'm asking is... how do you know when you can use "Adding Fractions Instantly," and get the right answer? Also, what would help is additional parts to your You Tube episodes with Part 2, Part 3, etc, using different example problems to gain additional practice, and gain the confidence of seeing and doing different fraction addition problems--as well Subtracting Fractions, Multiplying Fraction, and Dividing Fractions. Thus, can you add, subtract, Multiply, and Divide two, three, four, five fractions using your instant method? Or, is there an easy way to find / know when the instant method works? Thank you,

Use this method only but later simplify the fraction you get and thats it
