Jon, I'm sold. Thanks for the video and the brief discussion on low-speed torque as well.

nice job. whoa thanx for the tip on the scale factor..im going to use one of these on a little mill. thats a game changer.

I recently purchased the same VFD. If you're stalling at low speed you're probably running the drive in volts per hertz mode. This drive is capable of running in sensorless vector mode which will give you a lot more torque. The manual that came with my drive did not document this so you'll need to go to the Teco web site and download the full manual to see these parameters. Parameter 00-00 sets the control method 0=V/F mode, 1=SLV mode. If you set it to SLV mode you'll need to do an auto tune with the motor uncoupled by setting parameter 02-07 to 1. The drive will ramp the motor up and down for several seconds to characterize the motor and then you should be set.

I do have it in sensorless vector mode, and auto-tuned it. It has more torque than V/Hz mode, but there is only so much you can do when it's running really slow. That's why I kept the option of using two belts for the extra torque. I still might fiddle with the current limit, but I'm happy with it as it is so I'm not too motivated.

Jon doesn't tell you how to convert line frequency to quill speed. There are two settings on this VFD that must change. Set 12-04 to "1" and set 12-03 to the corrected RPM. In my case, my bandsaw uses an 1800 rpm motor so the correction factor that gets entered to convert rpm to surface feet per minute is 02677 which is entered as the integer value for 12-03

@jon Bryan Thank you! you helped me display RPM :D what a real pal :D your video really did help thanks!

i had been puzzling why it was so whinny sounding and i couldn't figure it out after about 2 hours of messing with mine last night. your video really helped :D having a VFD is amazing on an old piece of equipment. thanks again mate, i really appreciate the video.

Glad I found your videos I have the same mill you do. You need more views .

Jon, very informative. Just ordered the same setup and am wondering how you wired the REV/FWD switch in the front. Is that wired thru the output to the 3PH motor? thanks
@jonrbryan4 жыл бұрын
It's wired to the control inputs on the VFD. If you get the same kind of box for the controls, punch matching holes in a piece of sheet metal to back up the front panel. My first one started breaking out around the buttons and that's what I did to beef it up.

Nice video. I’ve installed the same VFD on a old drill press. I’ve set it to 60 HZ and it works good. I don’t know much about automation so I’m going to ask some questions. I’d like to have forward and reverse. How did you wire your forward and reverse switch and where did you get the switch and what is the switch called? Thanks for the video I need to watch it again I don’t want to mess this VFD up.

There are several different ways to configure it. I don't know where my sketch is now, but I believe that I used the 3-wire mode with the E-Stop mushroom switch wired to terminal S1 and FWD/REV on S2 and S3. It doesn't have to be momentary switches on S1. Parameter 00-04 controls the mode. The FWD/REV switch is a modular 22mm 2-position rotary selector switch. If you're not familiar with such things you could just use a 2-way toggle switch. You could use an ON-OFF-ON 3-position toggle and run it in 2-wire mode without the E-stop in 2-wire mode. You could use two NC switch blocks on the E-stop switch and wire them in series with the FWD/REV lines in 2-wire mode. More than one way to do it. Please don't electrocute yourself.

@@jonrbryan I probably would use a toggle switch when I get everything setup which will be awhile. I’ll ask more questions when I get started, I’ve handled electric stuff a good bit so I’m pretty carful. I just can’t wrap my head around programming. I really appreciate you answering.

forgive my ignorance, but what type of motor is on the press? (stock/replacement - voltage and phase) thanks!

Jon, I just purchased this same inverter. I am having a difficult time understanding how to make adjustments to the parameters. Could you do a video on how to make adjustments to the VFD? I only want to change the speed settings, and use the potentiometer on the front of the key pad
@jonrbryan8 жыл бұрын
I hope you got it all figured out. It's not too hard. Some things are left out of the printed manual, so you really need the download version for some of the finer points.

I have this same vfd and I was wondering what the parameter to display rpm instead of hz. I tried 12-03,1 and the number was way off and I'm not sure what to do. Thank you
@jonrbryan7 жыл бұрын
I have 12-04 set to "1" to give me integer resolution. Then it's just a matter of plugging the right scale factor into 12-03 to give you an accurate spindle RPM. I used a laser tachometer and a strip of reflective tape on the chuck to measure the RPM, then adjusted 12-03 accordingly. I believe the default value was 1800. I have a slight reduction in my pulley arrangement and wound up with a value of 1540. It scales directly from the RPM you measure with the tach. If the algebra gives you trouble, just do stepwise changes until the tach and the readout agree.

Thanks! That helps me a great deal as I have mine on a manual lathe and need rpms for threading and such.

is this the correct # of vfd you are using L510-101-H1-U for your motor?
@jonrbryan7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's the model that I'm using. It takes 115V single-phase in and produces 220V three-phase out for a 1 horsepower motor.

hey Jon thank you for the video. I have one question though, the green switch you used to turn it on/off is that hooked to the main 110v line on or in the s rail/com rail? I want to run with my unit in a box and operated remotely on switches estop and a 10k pot kind of like that. (note: also I am using 220v 1ph) if you could shine some light on that it would be great thank you again -Jason

Yes, it switches the AC line to the VFD (and the work light that I forgot to turn on for the demo). I've got the drill press on a wheeled base and wanted to be able to move it anywhere and plug it into the wall. Right now it's out in the garage while I'm spread out to do some cabinet work.

What chuck is on your press?
@jonrbryan4 жыл бұрын
It's a Grizzly G8583 1/32-5/8" JT3 keyless chuck. I've had it for years now, and am very happy with it.
